In the case of Sanchez- though I laugh out loud at the nyjunc's and Hobbes of the world who mistake Sanchez for Tom Brady-there is no doubt the Jets handled him terribly. They have almost systematically drained the offensive talent around him and gave him a new OC every other year while bringing in Tim Tebow and now drafting Geno Smith, which could spell the end for him. Awful job. Tebow was brought in here and told he would be a part of the offense, maybe 15-20 plays a game, play in the red zone, be a part of the team. The reality was he was hardly used, never given a position, passed over when Sanchez was benched and wasted a year of his career. At least the Jets could have TRIED to use him and it might have worked too. But the deadly combination of an unimaginative OC and a DC impersonating a Head Coach ended that. So I ask, Jets fans: who did they screw worse?
Neither. Sanchez brought it on himself. No talent excuse is out the window once you realize this guy cant anticipate or read a fucking trap coverage. No talent around him was why he led the league in turnovers since 2009? HE made those decisions and fumbled those footballs. Tebow was so bad in practice they couldnt even go to him with Sanchez setting back the position 50 yrs! Teammates even said "he's terrible". Theres a reason why noone wants Tebow around the league: he isnt any good. The Jets screwed themselves by drafting a QB with one yr under his belt in college top 5, then clammoring for headlines by acquiring Tebow. Tannenbaum was rightfully canned for these franchise-altering gaffes.
Any time that you bring in a QB without the intention of fully developing him you're screwing both yourself and the player. That said I don't think the Jets screwed Sanchez at all. The guy got something like $60 million out of them, money that he likely couldn't have gotten doing anything else. I do think the Jets screwed themselves a bit by the way they approached Sanchez as an asset but I'm guessing that what 2009 and 2010 turned into have evened that out some even if Sanchez was not primarily responsible. Tebow is a tougher call. His value is definitely down some at this point. However there's a pretty good argument to be made that this was going to happen no matter who he wound up playing for last year. 2011 was an unusual high for a mediocre athlete to achieve. He got there by luck and circumstance more than anything else and that type of achievement level is hard to maintain. I'd say the real answer is that the Jets screwed themselves with both QB's more than they screwed the QB's.
Agree with Jake. Neither one. Although I really think Sanchez was playing with a serious concussion for a good part of the season. I remember in week 2 against the steelers when he went scrambling and took a massive hit to the head in the open field. Literally after that moment he looked like a completely different quarterback. He looked excellent, confident and poised in the Bills game and the early goings of the Steelers game. Then he takes the hit, overthrows 'Tone in the endzone and it went to hell from there. But there was no way he was going to sit due to injury with Tebow on the bench. Don't give a shit about Tebow. Guy talks about "helping the team in any way" but simply refuses to play any position other than QB. Guy's a complete hypocrite and I hate the sympathy he gets. EDIT: Damn I gotta get rid of that old Schotty Sig. Although I think he got a raw deal here.
Neither. They both suck out loud. If you wanted to make a case for anyone, it would be Sanchez since we never really provided him with support on Offense. Still, his putrid play can be blamed solely on himself. As for Tebow, who the hell cares? The only reason people think he was "screwed" is because he's Mr. Popularity. Loads of other players go through the same things and it's "just part of the game", but when it's Tim Tebow then we suddenly have to change it because he's "special". Fuck that with the largest pole.
The "no weapons" excuse only works for 2012. He had plenty of weapons the other 3 years. Sure, there was a hole at RT in 2011. U gonna tell me other teams dont have a couple weak spots on their depth chart? I dont buy it.
Obviously, which is why I list it as an option only if you REALLY wanted to try to make an argument. In the end, he's responsible for being known as the Buttfumbler.
They didn't screw Tebow at all - he got paid millions to do nothing, and if he is any good some team will pick him up and he'll show it. Personally I think that is very unlikely, but to me the people who are claiming that the Jets have somehow damaged him forever aren't making much sense. Many many players have had to sit in the early part of their careers, and no one has ever claimed that it somehow made them untouchables to the rest of the league. If anyone has screwed him it's his rabid fans, who have muddied what would otherwise be a simple personnel question. Sanchez has had the whole package - pampered by having a great defense, running game, and special teams, then victimized by the talent being allowed to leave. I would say it's the media who have screwed him more than anyone, by making him the butt (pun intended) of everyone's jokes. It will be hard for him to get a chance at a backup spot for a while if he is released because teams will want to avoid the inevitable ridicule that will follow him for a while.
Was just throwing that out there, not directed at you. Im so fucking sick of the excuses for this guy it makes my head spin. Fucking RANDY STARKS picked him off twice in one game. LMAO
Wayne Hunter was a legendary hole though. There are very few offensive linemen who can get tossed like a ragdoll on one play and then get run around a series later and then for the piece de resistance wind up at the second level on a pass play with the guys on each side of him opposite both being in the backfield and him never having touched either of them. It got so bad that you'd see Hunter staggering forward in a zone blocking scheme of his own while his man almost backed into the backfield and sat on the QB or RB.
Yes, I understand. I've heard the same nonsense forever. Same guys who thought he was going to turn it all around in year 4, "JUST LIKE ELI!1!!". Oh, boy.
Jets screwed Tebow. His value is way down after this past season. He had trade value after leading Denver to the playoffs. After the way the Jets handled him, teams think he's toxic or something. Jets gave Sanchez more than he deserved though, both in terms of money and playing time.
Right, and we heard about it all offseason prior to 2012: it was the OL. Then in 2012 he had a solid OL and it became the skill position players and OC. Cant wait for this years excuses, what do u think they'll be? HC? Too much time in the pocket to think? Not getting laid enough? Lol cant wait. I pray to God its Garrard in 2013 with Geno waiting in the wings. If we can get just an average offensive output and cut down the turnovers were going to the f'in playoffs.
Considering the millions and millions of dollars that the Jets gave to Sanchez on a silver platter for being a subpar quarterback, I don't thing there is any question that Tebow got screwed more. Tebow was never given a chance on the Jets...not even when Sanchez was deservedly benched.
That's why I think it's his fans who have screwed him. If the Jets were as big a joke as everyone says, other teams wouldn't hold 2012 against Tebow. Instead he's radioactive, because they don't think he's all that good, and they've seen the circus that inevitably comes with him. It's precisely because the Jets didn't screw Tebow that other teams are so worried - they're afraid that they'll get burned in a similar way.
Tebow himself is about the furthest you can get from toxic. If you slapped him in the head for no reason, he'd probably thank the Lord for the opportunity to learn from that. It's the media circus that follows him that is the toxic part...I never did understand it, but I saw it coming to Jets a mile away when he was signed. You gotta wonder who will want to pick him up at all right now because of all the hype and distraction he brings, perhaps through no fault of his own.
Neither. Sanchez was given every chance to succeed. A good running game, a great defense, good WRs, a pass catching TE and he still failed. At some point or another, your top QB can't live off of the surrounding cast, and it has to be the other way around, where the QB can make up for gaps in talent. Look at say Russel Wilson. He had one RB and an OK WR crops at best. And maybe we would've been able to get better talent around him if he didn't require a ridiculous amount of money for being a below average player. The fact of the matter is, he sucks. He lacks field vision and gets easily rattled. Tebow- He sucks too. I doubt Sparano and Rex held him out from spite, but he just wasn't good enough to play. And we saw that when he played as well He's not good at other positions because other than being big and strong, he's not a super athlete that's going to be a game changing TE, without even factoring in his ability to catch. He's rightfully refusing to change positions because he knows he'll struggle. His best bet is to get a shot as QB and run read option. He knows it. So do other teams, hence why no one bothered to make an offer for him after he said no to changing positions. I love how everyone just blames the Jets for his misery. He led a team to the playoffs and an exciting win, and their front office couldn't wait to get rid of him. Yet, it's the Jets fault for bringing him in and not bestowing him with the starting QB spot. They got him for 4th rd pick, not exactly like they were giving up on a chance to get RGIII to get Tebow. He was valued as a backup and he played as a backup.
No. If you seriously believe he was the reason they were in the playoffs, you should probably sterilize yourself.
