Why did they say "EJ Manuel will probably start somewhere in the middle of the season" to a first round pick. Then for Jets they say "How do you go out and spend a second round pick 39th overall and think you can not have this guy be the week one starter" Seems a little opposite....
I never said the criticism of Smith was unjustified. I am just saying, a 3 year starter has a lot more tape to scrutinize than a one hit wonder like Sanchez was at USC. You mention "any Jets QB in history" like we've had so many playoff runs in our storied history. We're not the Steelers man. Sanchez is abysmal and not an NFL-caliber QB. Geno already has more tools than Sanchez (better arm, stronger, much much faster and doesn't take a lot of sacks), to give him the chance to become a good QB. I'm no trying to "crown" Geno a pro-bowler. He just has a lot of the skill set of a successful NFL QB. Now it's time to coach him up and send him out there and see if he's got the goods.
after watching more and more geno tape... dude is a stud. makes big plays all over the field. throws a lot of short routes, but he has great touch on his passes and really squeezes a lot of balls into tight windows. despite all the detractors saying hes not ready to start right away, i think this kid gives sanchez a good run for his money. if you are gonna say he isnt required to make reads, im just gonna say that you havent watched enough tape. sure a lot of plays hes making one or two reads, but there are so many times where he is scanning field as well. he may not be fully refined but he looks pretty close to nfl ready. and im one of those guys who thinks sanchez deserves another shot this season. this can only be good for sanchez. i know you guys like to all say how he crumbled under the pressure of tebow, but the fact of the matter is it was not the play of tebow that threatened mark, but the celebrity; and it must be pretty disconcerting to see a guy in practice who is clearly worse than you receive all this attention and fans literally screaming for him to start. thats not meant to be an excuse, its just the reality of the situation how i see it, and surrounding him with people that can actually challenge his skillset as a qb will only raise his game.
does 39th overall sound better then? cause if you look up playoff wins for quarterbacks all time, mark sanchez sits at 39th overall with 4 wins in 6 starts...
FWIW in this Robert Griffin scouting report, the negatives of his game coming out of college almost mirror Geno's. http://www.profootballweekly.com/prospects/player/robert-griffin-iii-10/
This was posted a few pages ago, but it needs to be posted again. This is a great breakdown of why Geno can/will be a successful NFL QB. He absolutely has all the tools, especially his pocket presence and accuracy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FTZZh4cKfXs
Thank you. I posted the actual YouTube link instead because I know you can't view embedded videos on the iPhone.
Geno actually looks pretty good when you watch the game film. A fair number of the fumbles are a result of the kind of option misdirection plays that he won't see much of in the NFL. Having 3 guys line up on your right shoulder and then go by you in different ways as you figure out which one to give it too causes fumbles. Playing 1000 snaps a year out of the pistol causes fumbles. I don't think the fumbles are going to be a big issue. I think he is going to have normal fumble numbers. He's probably going to be a great fit in the WCO. His passing repertoire is full of the sideline passes, slants and screens that the WCO promotes. His throws up the seams are very pretty and contrary to popular belief most of them are precision strikes against a guy with coverage on him. Tavon Austin did tend to blow by people and get open but Steadman Bailey always had people on him when the ball was coming in and the throws were very good and the catches excellent also. I think Bailey is going to be a good NFL receiver. He's got real presence. He reminds me of Wayne Chrebet only a bit bigger and faster.
Tavon most times couldn't go up and pick a ball out of the air, Geno often had to drop the ball right in his hands over the head of a defender 20 yards down field
Here is what is going to happen Geno will either be starting week one or Garrard is. Sanchez will not be here, the Jets are going to keep him and hope another teams QB gets injured and they will try to deal him off so they don't get a total screw job. If worst comes to worst Sanchez will either be 3rd QB on roster or Cut. I am leaning toward cut or traded before season starts.
I amazed at how many people feel that Garrard (who was never very good to begin with) is going to step in and be starter after missing two years. If there is an open competition with the past thrown out I'd lay odds on Sanchez and Smith both beating out Garrard. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Seriously. Garrard will be lucky to make it to the first preseason game without a season ending injury. Sent from my hollow moon orbiting Mars using a torsion field generator
The only possible issue can have with Smith and it's a valid point is that all he knows is the read option..he has never lined up under center..now the Jets may actually run some read option but he will have to learn the rest.
I think Geno starts week 1, I know a lot of you are saying we should wait but I dont find it we can. Sanchez is really messed up mentally hes going to get boo'ed from second he gets on field at HOME. Lets say first drive of the season he goes 3 and out everyone will be chanting for Geno. And there is also no one to really mentor Geno from being the starter. Geno has a lot of talent i dont know why some of you are saying hes a project QB. I disagree with that
