How soon we forget how great Sanchez was coming out of college. Smith obviously did not look as good on tape as Sanchez in college. But as a Jets fan I will hope Geno does well for us and if he is the Qb of the future they need to build around Him. Do not expect him to play this season unless he lights it up in practice. From what i have seen thus far Geno is going to have a hard time handling the media and the criticism he will get. it is just a matter of time before the geno just sucks thread start.
Very interesting. So about 70% of his throws were within 10 yards of LOS, he completed almost 90% behind LOS and about 70% of ones from 0-9 yards. Which is around or slightly above average (completion wise). I was right about his intermediate ball, seems he doesn't throw it much and when he does the completion rate isn't great but his completion rate on the long ball is above average but, again, a lot of the ones I saw were blown coverages and easily completions as long as he got it there. My concern would be the intermediate level passes and what the issue is with those completions and I would put a bit of an asterisk beside the completion percentage on the long bombs. Obviously blown coverages happens in the NFL as well but maybe just not as frequently as what he was facing in college. So not really sure how he is going to work with our current set of receivers as if they are expecting them to catch at the LOS and run for 20 yards shrugging off tackles or getting amazing blocks I don't think we have the guys to do that. If they are expecting Geno to send 20+ yard bombs thrown into double coverage in a tight window I'm not sure he's the guy to do that. So we're kind of stuck IMO. Either he's not the right QB for our WRs or our WRs aren't the right guys for him to throw to. Unless I'm mistaken on our WRs.
An he still was a top 5 pick. Geno a senior still had such big flaws he fell to the second round. Some of the criticism is mental which does bode well for NY. I hope he is great and that the Jets have learned from their mistakes with Sanchez. If Geno is the new franchise QB build around him. Get a good OC get some weapons let him learn how to prepare like an NFL QB. If we are smart we keep Sanchez and let him play this season (if he beats our Garrard). If Geno develops and Marks has a good year make a trade. Sanchez sucks bench him then cut him.
Sanchez only had 1 year of work (like Richardson...ugh) and played behind a line where he was barely touched. Geno has a much bigger resume and thus more room for criticism. And the ONLY person who really went in on him from a mental standpoint was the dude from PFW and he has been ripped for that dumb article. But then again he was the same guy who said Cam Newton's flaw was "a fake smile." Sanchez has proven to be the most abysmal QB in the league (among regular starters). There's no point in keeping him.
Smith dropped like a stone to the second round. There was plenty of criticism and what I saw with my own eyes. Mark as a starting QB has won more playoff games than any Jets QB in history he can not have been all bad.
Geno is an athletic QB but he is not a runner meaning no spread option or pistol.. (just not Geno's game). This means he will have to learn to be a prototypical NFL QB. This will take more time and patience he is not ready to start year 1. Something Jets fan lack is patience.
Garrard will be more than ready with a depth chart of Smith and McElroy. Can't wait till Sanchez gets cut
You can't use ratings from different years. They don't work like that which is why this year was so low b.c of what happened the year before. Learn that and you will be able to evaluate better then just sheeping off someone on ESPN or NFL network
Thing is Sanchez really wasn't that great in College, he had a good year, but in his entire career he only had thrown around 487 pass attempts...that's about one seasons worth of passes and not nearly enough to determine the players abilities. Smith by comparison has around 1,500 pass attempts in college, you have a pretty clear picture of his college career. It's worth noting that Smiths YPA were about at Sanchez's level, his completion percentage each year got better and his lowest was better than Sanchezs. His interception percentage was also about 1/2 of Sanchez's, sanchez's was a little over 3 and Smiths was around 1.5%, the exact numbers are in another thread on if Smith should start.
I say get rid of McElroy and have Garrard start, Smith backup, and Sanchez bring up the rear. Let Garrard play that brutal first half of the season, and let Geno play the last 6-7 games and lets see what we have.. Only way I see us getting rid of Sanchez is if a team has an injury at QB in mini camp.
Here is a tape of every Geno Smith pass vs LSU in 2011, that defense was full of first round NFL talent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvrXu9Fsvpk
Dude's pocket presence is miles above Sanchez. Geno actually leaves when the pocket collapses. Dude does his three step drop and that ball is gone.
Thats what stands out the most to me, that and his ability to throw nice touch passes to his under sized receivers
With the combination of Holmes and Kerley for those quick routes and Hill over the top, we have something to work with here.
Its not the greatest show on turf but its much better than trotting Sanchez out there for another dismal season. Defly something the jets can work with
