So I've been drinking a little Kool-aid today and thinking maybe we could have a pretty high scoring offense this year with Geno (if he starts) & Morningwood. Geno's offenses were 9th and 13th overall in division I football the last 2 years and Morningwood's offenses are ranked top 10 almost as often as Rex's defenses are. It's going to take the other skill players really stepping up in order for that to happen though.
anybody else really excited about Geno Smith? he didn't have a defense in college. in NY that won't be an issue. we are a top defense. I'm very excited to see him play.
EJ was drafted so high because of his Senior Bowl performance/leadership and interviews... Not really because of his play on the field. The Bills fell in love EJ during interviews, proday, SB ect, you know, kind like how we did with Sanchez. Geno outperformed EJ on tape and in the stat box. Geno is no slouch when it comes to his character either. He probably prepares the most out of all the QBs in the class from what I heard.

This means absolutely nothing but I will put it out there anyway. Geno Smith scored a 24 on the Wonderlic, which is a pretty good score. It's not a great score but it's pretty good. In the "this also means absolutely nothing" comparison category we have: Dan Marino - 15 Jim Kelly - 15 Steve McNair - 15 Randall Cunningham - 15 Terry Bradshaw - 16 Daunte Culpepper - 18 Now all that this tells us is that you don't need to have a high Wonderlic test score to be a great QB. Plenty of great QB's have had scores below the level (21) considered appropriate for an NFL QB. To further make the comparison, and so that people really understand: Alex Smith scored a 40 and blew chunks for a bunch of years before he recovered. Ryan Fitzpatrick is reported to have scored 48 out of 50 on the Wonderlic. For people who want to take Geno Smith's mannerisms and speaking style to indicate he's of below average intelligence, well that's your bias showing through because his Wonderlic actually suggests he's just fine in the grey matter realm. One wonders what Johnny Unitas would have scored on the Wonderlic. They weren't using the Wonderlic to evaluate people back then but Unitas had to switch one of his courses to Square Dancing in 1952 to keep his scholarship when Louisville University tightened academic standards for athletes.
There's also a difference between intelligence and football intelligence. If you watch the interview with Geno and Gruden you can tell he has a high football acumen. I'm hardly worried about that - in fact I'm pretty sure he's already more advanced than Sanchez in that category. The only red flag from that interview is that he tends to let his emotions get the best of him and wears them on his sleeve. Remind you of anyone? I'm excited to see what this kid can do. I think we have potential to have a pretty damn good offense this year with Geno at QB and Morningwood calling the plays.
Agreed on all points. The battle with Smith is not going to be physical or mental but emotional. The metro area will wear on anybody with all the attention, idolization and abuse that occurs. It's going to be really important for Geno Smith to get himself fully grounded to play in this cauldron and I think that will take several seasons. I expect Smith to play this season but I think it will take him longer than that to get completely grounded. Having a WCO playbook to master will certainly help.

He looks to have decent mechanics that WILL have to be upped before the season... which he knows already. but i like what i see.. only thing is... when the protection in the pocket fades and he cant run... what will he do ? ....make a Mark sanchez throw ? .... thats what it comes down to,to me decision making,because thats what murdered sanchez,he caved under pressure. Geno is accurate and has a good arm... but its all about can he make plays when the going gets tough. He also seems to be comfortable with the playing speed of the NCAA its not like that in the pors he will have to adjust quick.
The way he throws and the way that new kid zac rodgers can catch... i have a feeling that could develope fast.
