I'm anti-Geno but if we absolutely have to have him for whatever reason I can get over my bias and just learn to live with him. As long as we don't trade up. We have so many holes that we should have traded down at least one of our two first rounders but didn't (or couldn't, whatever). Now we're talking about giving up picks to move up a few spots to grab someone who obviously dropped to the second round for a reason (although to be fair a lot of experts didn't feel he was first round talent to begin with). I think we should draft a QB in the 4th round, best one available I don't really care. If we can trade our 5th for Ivory then do that, if not then just draft a RB either way we need to address that position. With our 2, 3, 6, 7 picks we draft S, G, TE and OLB/DE (pass rusher). We can still address those positions even if we get Smith in the 2nd but not if we trade up (unless we trade down later on) and they will be less likely to be starting caliber. We need a franchise QB, not a placeholder. Smith is a placeholder. Get the franchise QB next year.
Base on the trade value chart, it should only cost them there 2nd and 4th. I would make the trade and then trade down in the 3rd to pick up an additional pick. I think it would be a good value.
Smith threw 177 of his 518 passes behind the line of scrimmage. That is 34% of his passes. Take those 177 passes out and he is at 56 completion %. Not very impressive. He may work out and he may not. But what really scares me is will drafting him prevent us from taking a much better franchise QB next year. If we are going to take a flier on a risky QB lets do it round 3 or 4. That way we can discard that QB quickly next year if we see someone better.
Sanchez was about 56% and he threw almost all of his passes behind or within a few yards of the line of scrimmage. Oh and he had about 5 times the number of turnovers too.
I have no doubt he is a huge improvement over Sanchez. But he reminds me to much of Sanchez with all the fumbles, lack of poise and no pocket presence. I don't want to be stuck with another Sanchez for x number of years even if it is an improved version of Sanchez.
Taking him in the 2nd though makes him a potential backup if he sucks..not like making a QB a high 1st round pick.
How can you convert 177 attempts to all incompletions? Regardless of where he completed the pass, they were "completed" passes. Our current QB can't even complete a screen.
That is possible. But it will hard to to draft a franchise guy after trading up take a guy 33 this year unless he is really really bad. My guess is no matter how bad he is a guy taken 33 gets at least 2 years to prove himself. But if we take a flier on a guy in rounds 3-5 they are much easier to dispose and move on from. He flunks what I consider the most important aspect of a NFL QB. Pocket presence, ability to feel and anticipate the rush and the ability to extend plays by moving in the pocket. I cringe at the thought of having to endure watching years of another Sanchez type QB that is a sack and fumble machine. I might be overreacting a bit from the trauma of having watched Sanchez ruin the franchise the last 4 years. But as an aging Jets fan having rooted for the team since SB 3 I sure hope we get this right. If we are going to trade up for a QB in round 2 we have to be right on this or it will be a huge set back for us many more years in addition to the damage the Sanchez pick has already done to us.
Not a big fan of us moving up for anyone, let alone Geno Smith. In fact I really, really hope this is a smoke screen because we want to scare someone else into going after him.
eyeing geno So the hot news this afternoon is that we are zeroing in on Geno Smith. I dont know enough about him to make a statement regarding whether or not this is a good idea. I personally think we should hold off on qbs until the qb heavy draft next year. then again, i definitely have season tickets to the anything but sanchez club...What say tgg faithful.

Could be a nice smokescreen. 1) Either forcing teams that need a QB to trade up, thus leaving the player the Jets want to fall to them, or 2) If a QB is there when the Jets pick, getting more to trade down.

I want no part of Geno especially his performance in cold and snow in the Pinstripe Bowl. Guess where it's also cold and snowy? Most of the AFC East and our own stadium. Please no Geno!
On SNY yesterday, Schein was saying how this is Rex last year and Idzik is calling the shots and is bringing in his own people. Than, we draft 2 Rex guys. I think the so-called "Jets media" is completely in the dark. I'm not sure they have any insight, at all, on the Jets FO. IMO
This deal ain't going to go by the normal chart though, considering this is only the second year where the top picks in the second round are highly sought after a long delay and teams restructure their boards, and you're talking about QB's being involved most likely so there's a premium on that too.
If that's the case why do we know this? I hope he falls to us IMO he's the best QB in the draft. If we pass on him for the 3rd time we're gonna regret it.
That makes no sense at all. We knew Geno was available at the end of last night. If he's not on our list for today, then it's the same deal as 15 hours ago.
Honestly, I'm not totally against this move but I would prefer we wait until round three or later and get a guy like Bray
As has been pointed out a million times, please note how Geno faired against the two or three top 50 defenses he played. He was shit. The air raid is a gimmick that inflates the numbers of QBs to an absurd degree. Graham Harrell, Colt Brennan, Casey Keenum, and on and on have had absurd numbers in the same system. For the love of god understand the circumstances of who this QB before saying "but but but he had a 70% completion rating!"
