The Richard Dent role is not made for a 300 pounder whose best position is the 3tech DT. Coples is NOT an edge rusher. putting him there wastes his value. They needed the pass rushing 9 technique or OLB, and Jarvis Jones was available if they felt compelled to finish the 46 front (Wilk/Ellis/Coples as TNT). they didn't need to spend another first rounder on another
Once the trade was made and Austin was off the board the Jets did the sensible thing. Milner had to be the pick at 9, 13 is another story but...The Pats are in our division and what's clear is the team that shares a stadium with us has shown the league the path to upsetting Tom Brady. A 4/3 line full of athletic guys who can get in his face in a hurry. The O is going to take some time. Next year our cap turns around big time. I always love drafted players and don't get to upset about what guys did at pro day or college. As a Jets fan I have enjoyed potential much more than actual NFL ability.
I'm OK with Richardson at #14 but don't think Milliner warrants a #9 pick. Avg CB speed and has good timing, but played in a top program at Bama that hid his lack of physical power and only used him for zone coverage. 4 reps of 225lbs? are you kidding? He is not so fast and quick that he can make up for being manhandeled for body position by stronger WRs and TEs. ATL got a better CB several picks later. I say either get the best WR on the board or take a chance with Nassib in 2nd round.
When you already have a solid team you have the luxury to draft defensive linemen three years in a row. By the time this team is ready to compete the defense will be old or the Jets won't be able to afford them.
So one more year of Sanchez, defense is older, then draft a QB in 2014, maybe by 2016, 2017 you can expct that QB to be playing at a high level. Fact is when you have the worst offense in the NFL, literally no players to speak of at all, huge gaps in other areas like the line, safety, TE, WR, you don't have the luxury to add yet another defensive lineman in the first round.
I browse this board all of the time, but I do not really post much, as you can see from my post count. With this said I just wanted to use this time to quote the OP because he is spot on imo!
No one should say that corners don't matter. However, everyone should say that no corner is worth the same amount as an elite QB. There's a huge difference.
Then the cowardly owner needs to say that. (1) If we are rebuilding, tell the fans that and stop the B.S. We'll accept it. We won't like it, but we'll accept it. (2) If the Jets are rebuilding, then tell us what Rex Ryan needs to 'save his job.' Don't tell us the playoffs or you expect to make the playoffs. If the team is competitive and wins 4 or 5 or 6 games, then is Ryan coming back ? Because 4-6 wins are what 'rebuilding team's do, not 7-9 or 8-8. (3) If Ryan is probably NOT coming back (barring a fantastic run that leads to the playoffs or a Lovie Smith-type near miss), then stop pretending that he is coming back even if you won't tell us he isn't.
If the top player available on our board always happens to be a DL then perhaps our board sucks or we don't fully comprehend the league-wide devaluing of DL. What if the BPA next year is yet another DL???
in what fucking world should the public know all the plans of a private company just because they are a fan of the product? they should tell the fans they are rebuilding? if you can't figure that out without it being spelled out to you, the problem is you, not the front office. they should state explicitly what Rex needs to do to save his job? how the fuck does doing that, nevertheless you knowing, add any value to running the team? you want to know what the owner and GM knows, become the owner or GM. but that expectation is a you problem, not a problem with the team.
This wasn't a good draft for offense. The only other offensive player I would have taken given the chance in round 1 was Warmack, and I believe we would have if he was there at 13. We still have 6 more rounds, let us at least finish the draft before damning them to hell for taking BPA early in a defensive draft.
When the owner tells us in Training Camp that he's as optimistic as when the Jets went to 2 AFC CG, then something is wrong. I know the score. If the owner is telling us 10-6 or 12-4, he's either a liar or delusional.
We have Holmes coming back healthy, we upgraded at running back we added a Guard in FA and our 2nd round pick from last year will be back. Fact is we have Tom Brady in our division and the Giants with a 4 man athletic front have kept him in check in a number of big games. 2 to 3 years our D will not be old.
If I'm the Jets GM and Mark Sanchez is my QB and Tom Brady is in my division I value getting to Brady more than protecting Sanchez. No brainer.
