well said ltjf... this is the 3rd or 4th post of yours that i have really liked and agreed with. you dont HATE the picks, you dont HATE the guys they picked. they just dont make much sense and there were other options. im with you on that.
Here's how I'm rationalizing the pick. Assuming Milliner is a replacement pick for Revis, and I'm not sure about that, he's certainly a downgrade over what we had. However, you can't just look at it from a skill standpoint because business plays a big role in the pick. Over the course of his rookie deal, Milliner is going to save the team somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million over what we would've had to pay Revis (I'm greatly oversimplifying the numbers). That's $50 million we can spend elsewhere, on other team needs. To me, the potential downgrade (we haven't even seen Milliner play in Green and White) in skill is not worth greater than $50 million, and Milliner's play could shrink that delta. Therefore, drafting Milliner was a good replacement move IMO. Now, would I have rather seen them fill an obvious need by drafting Eifert, Jones, Vacarro, or Warmack? Yes, but I have faith that we will hit on picks today and tomorrow for those needs, and that we took BPA with a long term view of where the team is headed.
What scares me about the Milliner pick is the injury history baggage. If he's getting banged up like that in college, what happens in the Pros where everybody he'll be playing against are bigger, faster and meaner. Can he stay on the field in the Pros is my main concern. He doesn't have to be another Revis, but the kid has got to play.
That's great. Lets hope that translates into the Pros where everybody is bigger and faster and hits a lot harder too. I hope the kid hits the weight room and bulks up before TC. what is he now? 6'-1/200lbs or so? Might wanna play at what? 210 ish?
From personal experience, gaining 10 pounds of muscle isn't that hard. He probably should work out 4 times a week and eat some protein bards. That can be accomplished in 3-4 months.
Im thinking that extra muscle will come in handy when the Kid hits the Pro game. Especially when he has to cover TE's and big Wr's. Perhaps even come up to stop a run.
fwiw they dont seem too sad that they ended up with warmack in tennessee http://www.gotitans.com/threads/titans-first-round-selection-10-g-chance-warmack.87090/
i watched a bit of tape on milliner and it really made me realize the things i was concerned about should be concerns. i have to ask WHY does the guy play the short side of the field 90% of the time? i cant imagine he will be able to do that in the nfl.... he gets his hands on alot of balls but often has to use his speed to catch up and that works great in college but in the nfl these guys are not getting caught. he doesnt shed blocks spectacularly and is inconsistent on run support. really his shining moments are in open field. unblocked to the qb or rb. or on a deep route where he uses his speed to catch up. time will tell but this is not the type of player i really want to see at number 9. and i would really rather have had warmack to really solidify the o line.
I preferred Xavier Rhodes. Better size and a press man corner, and we know press man is the coverage Rex Ryan loves to play behind his blitzes.
That's a fair concern; however, do CBs really get hit hard? Especially the ones who play outside the hash-marks on an island?
What's the point of this? How can you not be happy with a Top 10 pick (as long as we're not reaching) BTW, does anyone know if Dee has a speech impediment or just a Southern accent? I can't understand half of what he says
At some point he's gonna have to be involved in run support or play against bigger wr's. That when he'll both hit and get hit.
