yes and no... the circumstances are completely different. The Jets did not have the offensive luxury that Detroit does and Ansah projects as an edge rusher with freakish ability. Richardson plays DT which is a position we already have a very good one. At this time we don't play a 4-3 so until that changes I'll say that Richardson doesn't have a position.
I think between playing multiple fronts and the fact that DL don't play every down, working 3 DEs into a game plan won't be an issue. Not to mention with how shitty our offense will and the amount of time our defense will be on the field, we will need all the legitimate depth we can get. I also can't wait to see what Richardson does to team's screen game (Patriots). He is a sideline to sideline interior lineman.
Initially, I had the same reaction. I was okay with Milliner since he was the best player available but the Richardson pick threw me off completely. I like Richardson as a prospect but like many have said, to neglect offense twice this high is a bit strange. Ultimately, I think we could have ended up with Warmack at 9 and Milliner at 13. Although heres the thing, we as fans (unfortunately) have to realize we cant get too crazy over a selection until the player actually has a year or so under his belt. Who knows, maybe Richardson ends up an elite DT in a 4-3. Having a line of Coples, Richardson, Mo, and a fill in DE could end up being one of the best in the league. I think the Jets plan at this point is this, cut Cro in 2014, go into the draft with a top 5 pick, have around 50 million or so dollars for free agency, and start a MASSIVE overhaul on offense. From there all we need is a few fill in's at Guard and RT, plus hopefully get one of the top QBs and we end up looking like a potential playoff team. This rebuilding process isnt going to be easy but lets have the process pan out before we overreact.
Maybe I'm missing something but I haven't seen much from Ellis to be as confident in him as many others are. He still seems pretty raw to me, so an unproven Ellis combined with the loss of DeVito, I can definitely see a huge opportunity for Richardson to get some paying time this season.
It's funny, I was reading a Boston sports board chock full of Pats fans, and came across their game thread as the Richardson pick was made. Thats pretty funny they were drooling over Richardson... But its true,as much as Richardson seems insanely stout where will he go ..? he has alot of speed for his size too.

I think they keep Cromartie and cut Holmes and Sanchez instead. They will still be 50 mil under the cap.

Whatever, there was no offense left, and teams probably tried to rape them on trade value (see Oakland/Miami). Everyone knows this draft is thin, they took the BPA's. Hey, it wouldn't suck to have have our own version of Tuck, Osi, JPP would it? Lets see what the rest of the draft holds as far as offense.
Was really upset initially but I've come around to both picks.You just can't fault a team for going BPA. I know Richardson was a bit of a surprise but we knew going in that when our pick came around the best player left could be a DL. Maybe we expected Star but after watching tape Richardson is every bit as good. Problem w/ Star is I think his body type may have been too similar to Wilk/Ellis, there were questions about his ability to play 3-4 nose..and Richardson is just a flat out better overall athlete. This gives the Jets 3 very unique body types for their multiple front D. Wilk,Coples & Richardson are all match-up nightmares in their own right. How will it look on game day? Well I think we'll see all sorts of unique Odd/even/46 looks thrown together. This looks to be a groundbreaking unconventional DL which the NFL has never seen before.
I'm not super happy with the Millner pick at #9 but I totally understand the reason we took him. Richardson was a fantastic pick and sets our defense up long term. Now we just have to keep taking BPA to keep filling holes on the roster through the rest of the draft. People need to take a step back and realise we were in cap hell, with massive holes on the roster and therefore it's not going to be a 1 year turn around. I think our defense is going to be top 5 again this year with a poor offense which should lead to a poor record and a high draft pick next year. If you take a step back and say we've got a heck of a lot younger on defense which ends up looking scary good during the season we should be pleased because we can address big offensive needs in 2014, starting with a quarterback and skill players. Not to mention we will have a ton of cap space after cutting the likes of Sanchez and Holmes to bring in further skill players to make our offense a real threat. So the way I see it is this year, thus far we've solidified our defense long term. The rest of the draft and next year is about building up our offense and I'm very confident we will be a very good football team for a long time after the 2014 draft. We didn't reach for need, we didn't make any silly move up the draft board to go get someone like Austin or Jordan. We picked the best player available on our board and thats the way to get long term success. But this time we're building the team from the ground up while cleansing ourselves of awful contracts. I'm excited to see these young guys grow. Our defense could be pretty damn amazing and I can't wait to see Coples, Mo, Richardson and Ellis throwing some O-lines around. Short term pain, long term gain.
If the addition of Richardson doesn't propel the Jets DL into one of the top 5 in the NFL than this pick will go down as a reach and a fail. Bottom line. The whole thinking behind this pick was driven by Rex's desire to have a dominant front. So it better perform up to expectations or it's nothing short of a bust pick. I honestly think it was a risky pick. I would've taken Eifert at 13 or traded down. I hope for the Jets sake that I'm wrong.
The Jets certainly make it difficult to be a fan sometimes. I feel like this season is already shaping up to be mediocre at best.
what bothers me a bit about that is that they had a CB in that top 4 group who has been frequently injured and may not be that much better than the 2nd and even 3rd tier group oc CB's in this draft..... i would think at some point u have to tweak that ranking taking into acct other issues and comparisons.
Milliner might be the best CB in the draft but is he leaps and bounds ahead of everybody else? I don't even think he is the best CB in the draft but of course I'm not a scout. The Rams really fucked us because I think we were going take Austin.
After a night of thinking it over, Ive cooled down on the picks more. At least Im glad that they went BPA. This team simply needs talent, and according to their board we got it. Ive been in the camp to push for offensive players since day 1, so that was the first blow. Hopefully we can adress that with the rest of the draft- still some of my favorite players out there. Im still concerned as to what formations we will be using primarily because I dont want to see them give up on Ellis who showed a ton of promise. Im hoping Rex can find a way to have all 4 DLmen out on the field at the same time. People now should realize the change in the type of LB that we will be looking for IMO... Now 4-3 OLBs are more appealing... Also, I will forever hate the Rams and Bills with a strong passion because they took Tavon away from us... Those bastards. I cant believe that Idzik had this place on lock down, not a peep out of the facilities. And then 2 days before the draft word gets out that we are very interested in Tavon, which then royally fucks us. Oh well. Here's to a great day 2 and 3.
thats where i think some of these know it all sport executives/gm make a mistake.... put the numbers, charts, and stats away and apply some balanced reasoning to this. as u say - the talent gap from milliner to rhodes, trufant is likely not large enough to justify taking milliner at 9. i dont care if he is the BPA at that point in time. IMO - a selection of either warmack or jones makes a more positive impact on a units (OL or LB) prospective performance than milliner will.
