I think there is a little Giant mentality going on the past few years. The Giants too drafted D lineman when many thought there wasnt a need for it..and it turned out pretty good for them. Cant really go crazy on Day 1 because there is a ton of good talent still on the board and the next 2 to 3 picks will be crucial to this draft.
Yeah, that's the gist of it - you hit the nail on the head. While the scouting staff remained intact for this draft, Idzik is the one finalizing the selections. From predraft articles interviewing other GMs/FO-types that have worked with him, it seems that he looks specifically for playmakers on offense rather than measurables, and on defense he looks to create a "beast" unit ("quote from the article, not me). Hopefully the Jets have a guy at the helm who knows how to form his own opinion, separate from the mainstream one, that results in finding good value. That he played a significant role in the organization that got mocked/questioned for drafting Irvin in the 1st and then Wilson in the 3rd gives me hope.
Also, Im wondering if the Jets would have taken the receiver for the 9th pick if the Rams didnt move up and take him. You hear them saying Rex was blabbing about this kid all day yesterday. Was it a smokes screen? Hey that kid might be great but a 5'8" receiver? Im happy about that not happening.
The sad thing is Thomas was a solid player for us but never worthy of a 1st round pick especially with Ed Reed which was a need on the board.

Remember when everyone made fun of the Lions for taking a WR in the first round three straight years? Well, we've taken a 3-4 DE three straight years. And you can play 3 WRs at once, but you can't play 3 DEs.
Everyone thinks they are an expect, there is nothing worse than people craping on a draft pick they have never heard or have never seen play. None of you know how these picks or any player in this draft for that matter will turn out. Stop pretending you do.
Agree...here is some pros and cons and I have to say...the more I read..the more I like. This kid is an impact player with rare speed for that position..and he will be used on the outside too...he has to with that kind of speed off the snap: (Getty Images)The New York Jets have selected Missouri DT Sheldon Richardson with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. Pros: Absolutely marvelous gap penetrator with the quick-twitch speed and hand movement to upset any blocker. Has a very quick first step off the snap and propels himself through the action. Sifts through blockers well (including double-teams) when angling and trying to beat slide protection. Keeps his head up and his body balanced after initial blocking contact, allowing him to make plays after fist impact. Gets skinny off the snap when facing a single blocker -- will turn his body to get through and has an impressive rip move to reinforce it. Can maul if he gets his hands up before the blocker, though this isn't his predominant attribute. Keeps his feet moving and will wear double teams down. Keeps his eye on the play and will disengage from blockers quickly to make plays downfield. Terrific space defender for his size -- will careen from sideline to sideline more quickly than a big man should. Has the pure agility to back into defense on screen passes, and the ability to drop in zone blitzes. Cons: Richardson is not a consistent physical "winner" in that he will get stoned by more powerful blockers, especially in the run game. Will also tend to get boxed out if he's moving to the side and into the pocket. Comes off the snap too high at times, leading him to lose leverage and angle battles he should win. Limited experience at the FBS level could hurt him on some draft boards, but his play against better teams will more than make up for it on others. What he brings to the team: Scary gap versatility. Richardson's first step is what makes him truly special, but make no mistake -- this is a player with a fantastic overall skill set with the ability to be an impact player from the start in the NFL. The nfl network guys were literally laughing... marshall faulk just kept shaking his head. I thought he was disagreeing with irvin.... then he started talking and i realized he was just dumbfounded.
I have to say I'm loving Sheldon Richardson. Seems like an explosive hard working player, and from watching his combine interview, he's funny and seems to really love playing football. He may end up being a pro bowler and the best DT from this class.

And by the way.. i know Revis is Revis and he will do great where he is... BUT! lets face it our D-line did alot to make sure he was miles ahead of anyone else... lets see if the bucs underachieving line can keep revis at the top. im rooting Cromartie has the best year statically as a CB in 2013

ESPN Insider Sheldon Richardson Missouri DT NY Jets From Tampa Bay What he brings: There are concerns about durability, character and an underwhelming workout, but on the other hand, tape trumps all. Richardson is a disruptive run stopper with an explosive first step and much better range than his timed speed would suggest. He needs work as a pass-rusher in terms of setting up moves and eliminating wasted motion. He has lined up at end at times, as well, and shown better ability to translate speed to power at that spot than he does inside. How he fits: He's a good football player, but he appears to be selected at a position that has pretty good depth for the Jets. However, they are looking for versatility on their defensive front. They are a traditional 3-4 defensive line, but they can go to 4-3 looks, and it's likely they think Richardson fits as a defensive end in the 3-4 and a defensive tackle in the 4-3, which makes him a three-down player. He also has the one-gap attacking skills that Rex Ryan really likes. But they already have one ascending player in Muhammad Wilkerson and another with unrealized talent in Quinton Coples. You continue to look at the Jets and wonder where the edge pass rush comes from, but Richardson will give them more physicality.
Still not a huge fan of this pick. I get that we will play some 4-3 and he'll come in handy on those picks but what percentage of plays will be 4-3 vs 3-4? 10? 25? 50? So either someone is sitting or he's playing out of his natural position the majority of the time. If it's only 10% then getting a 3-4 DE would have made far more sense. Or if you still want to go DT why not pick Star and improve the NT position? Coples, Wilkerson and Star (I can't spell his last name) would be a pretty crazy front, IMO. I guess it all depends on your drafting approach: BPA or to fill a need. Usually I'm all for BPA but I feel like when you have as many holes as we do you should factor that in. So far I don't think we've improved our team. At all.
So I'm past talking about how terrible a pick this was. My next question is what happens when the Jets go 3/4? where does this guy fit in? Too small to play the nose, does he rotate with Coples? A high first round pick for a guy who will rotate on the d-line??? That's not very smart. Unless they go to the 4-3 full time and he plays the Dewayne Robertson position. Yikes I just threw up in my mouth a little because he reminds me of Robertson...
