I'm completely fine taking Austin at 9 as long as Dion Jordan isn't available. I've been saying a lot of stuff about Dion Jordan falling. Those two are my favorite players in the draft with Warmack and Vaccaro not far behind.
Outside of trading down both picks, this would be my dream scenario unless Jordan falls to 9. The icing on the cake would be Ivory for a 6th.
It's been so long that this franchise has drafted a skill position offensive player not named Sanchez that I can't even remember who it was. Anthony Becht maybe? Whil I still believe we need to address the OL because that's where it begins and ends without skill position players this offense will continue to be a disgrace.
COLES was drafted in the same draft as Becht...... followed by Moss the next year. of course they spent a 1st rd pick on Keller in 08 :shit: but to answer the question, I would go nuts. This team needs foundation players with it's currently gutted roster, and I don't see those 2 as such. Offensive players with their shitty O-line wont help much.
I would go nuts if the Jets drafted a player smaller than me (Austin) and (another) TE in the first round. That might put me over the edge. I understand the Jets need playmakers on offense, but you can them in later rounds. Who is the playmaker on defense now that Revis is gone and the secondary is not a strength? You can't win if you can't stop the other team from scoring. The Jets need a pass rusher with one of the two first rounders. Besides, who is going to throw to Ausin and Eifert? Garrard? McElroy? Sanchez? Build the foundation first, then add the fancy items. The Jets are in dire need of some front 7 players on defense and OL on offense. You don't put fancy tires on a Chevy. Until there is a QB and an OL, the Jets are a Chevy. Austin does them no good without the basic tools on offense - QB and OL.
That's the problem. If this happens we'd have to pick up a guard or tackle and kick Howard inside with our 2nd or 3rd to see any dividends paid on the 2 1st rounders. Then the defense is completely fucked with one day two pick to address the fact that we have about 1/2 an OLB combined right now on the roster and maybe 2/3 of a safety. On the other hand it could turn out to be an ingenious 2014 Bridgewater gambit now that I think about it. Just draft those 2 guys in the 1st then take 5 defensive players in a row. Get Sanchez literally murdered next year finish 2-14 voilah Super Bowl trophy.
And how did that Moss pick work out? Was he worth his draft position? NO. And he was a giant compared to Austin.
I feel you. Some people think Austin's size will be a problem. Not sure why, since all of the rules are teetering toward the offense, and wide receiver is at the forefront. Watching Tavon Austin play trule reminds me of watching Leon Washington play. Even when Austin is lined up as a receiver. He has that same field vision, same confidence in his body's ability, same ability to follow blocks, same ability to create blocks with his movement in the open field. Another thing he does in the open field that is reminsicent of Leon is the angles he takes in reference to potential tacklers. He doesn't slow his motion and try to take an extreme angle, he accelerates into a narrow cut and trusts his speed to make the tackler miss. And his feet are QUICK, very quick. His hands are also superior. And he's an excellent return man. I'd love to see the Jets pick Austin. Especially if they also take Eifert. Eifert can play from a receiver spot almost as well as the TE spot. And his blocking is superior. Now I know we'll take a couple of guys that I don't want, because Big Barry got me all spun up on these two gamebreakers on O.
Go ahead an find the best college highlights available on Moss and compare them to Austin. You're letting his size make you look like a doofus.
I think you need to reverse it, Eifert may be gone by #13, I think Austin should last to #13, unless STL trades up in the 10-12 range. I would have no issue, but there is a possibility Jordan may fall to #9.....then all bets are off.
It isn't like we're abandoning TE if we take Austin 9 and DON'T take Eifert 13. Can trade that pick back and hope he lasts. If he doesn't then fill another position of need, gain a pick in the process and draft Ertz in the 2nd. If he's gone too then draft the next best remaining TE with the next pick after that. Austin is the key if we go with this type of draft. Eifert is the afterthought.
Leon Washington was a mid round pick who was never more than a role player. Is that what you want with a top 10 pick? How is Austin's lack of size not an issue. Its still football and he is going to get hit by players weighing 50-150 pounds more than him.
I think I am getting sold on Austin, we need a gamebreaker on both sides of the ball badly, and Kerley obviously isn't that so he shouldn't prevent picking Austin. If Austin could be our DeSean Jackson/Steve Smith/Percy Harvin I would be ecstatic, having a guy that gets open is huge especially as Hill needs more experience at WR
Austin is my 2nd favorite player in this draft but I have to agree that his size could end up being an issue. I would still take the chance though because his abilities fill a sorely needed role on this team.
Receivers getting 'tackled' gets redefined by the officials every year. It's time that you realize the NFL keeps getting moved toward flag football. There are plenty of fast, small receivers that get it done in this league. Austin is not frail or weak. Worrying about his height and weight don't take into account his body development, strength or toughness. I have seen him shed takes from linebackers and defensive linemen. What is your argument, besides his height and weight? Have you even seen him play?
Sorry. The game has changed. None of this holds true anymore. It is a passing league predicated on match-ups & athletic explosion on the outside. If you don't have play makers on the outside who strike fear into the opposition..you don't have a chance. Yes O-linemen are important but O-linemen come around in every single draft class. Defense is important too but we've spent the last 3 first rounders there & already have our rock in Rex. This offense has some functional pieces. But it lacks that match-up nightmare dynamic play maker to raise everyone's level of play. A Dynamic play maker is the great equalizer in the game of football. You don't always have a shot on a guy like Austin. He's a versatile player you can build a whole offense around.
Oh, and by the way... the West Coast Offense may be a Chevy, but it is a Corvette. Same make but in a performance model with different performance components than the pickup truck you seem to be talking about.
The only problem I have with Austin is that Sanchez's inconsistent accuracy is likely to get him killed.
