I agree about 2014 QBs. I've been preaching that along with some other guys on this board. There are too many variables that can happen between this year and next year.

Whether it's Nassib or whoever, they aren't going to trade up. WAY too many holes to give away picks.

I strongly disagree with the Jets waiting till round 3-5 to get a QB. I see Jets fans on here mention that they should wait till the mid rounds for Glennon, Jones, Renfree, etc ....Why don't people deal with facts?? You need a 1st round QB, maybe a 2nd. Look at all the starting QBS in the NFL and where they were drafted. The evidence speaks for itself. Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, and TOny Romo (undrafted) defied the odds to the 10th degree. There are no franchise QBs after round 2. More like round 1.

I didn't say they weren't going to grab a QB. I said they aren't trading up.

WHat do you make of the poker game between Idzik and BUff, Rocky?? Tell me your thoughts ...
How could there be any conclusion other than the Jets are gonna make a push for Nassib? Doesn't it stink?
I mean, I just don't know how else to interpret the exchange of misinfo. If the Jets really want Geno Smith, it must have been GREAT news when SAl Pal said they want Nassib. Why would they go out of their way to DENY what they want, ya know?

I hear you Rocky, trading up SOUNDS terrible (aka Sanchez, puke city). But, whats a 3rd round pick, that could be recovered if they so want to? (by trading down from 13). I mean, if in fact they do love Nassib, and they have determined that is their guy ... Whats a 3rd round pick to move up 2 or 3 spots?

Barkley is the pick for the Bills.

The Bills like Nassib, but love Barkley.

    Trust me.

I once heard an analyst say that the 3 days leading up to the NFL draft are the most dishonest days in any sport. I always think about that statement when writers "leak" info. Today I heard the Jets want: Manuel, Nassib, and Smith. Two days ago, I heard they really like Dysert. It's all a game.

IF the Jets have someone ranked that high, I wouldn't blame them for taking him. There is an obvious need, and they are taking a chance on someone they like. Personally, I don't think they are going to do it though. Lots of holes, Idzik can pencil in 2 starters at 9 and 13. At the very least, these guys will get plays, or be on special teams.

If they draft a QB at 9/13 and they don't start right away, they are basically worthless for 2013. So drafting a guy round 2-3 can alleviate that a bit. That said, if they trade back and collect another 1, I can definitely see them grabbing someone towards the end of round 1.

Another thing to remember on rumors this week...Agents. The higher their players get selected, the more cash goes in their pockets. I guarantee these guys are passing out all kinds of nuggets to reporters.

Why would they leak this then? A Buff beat writer broke this? Seems like smoke 101 to me. Then the Jets respond with more QB smoke .. something is going on here.

    I can see that.

Lot's of people are automatically putting Nassib with Marrone. There is also a flipside to this. Marrone knows more about Nassib than any scout, and he also knows all of his weaknesses. So maybe he feels like Nassib will struggle in the NFL, and Barkley would fit better in the long run.

Plus, let's face it, you can't draft a player based on the HC. The NFL is a coaching carousel, and it spins twice as fast in Buffalo ;).

A 3rd round pick is a safety or a linebacker or a guard or a TE or any of a bunch of other things the Jets don't have right now and need.

The thing that got both Bradway and Tannenbaum in trouble is that they don't respect the draft process at all. They see it as cherry-picking event instead of the harvest it should be.

If you pick a few cherries, well that's all good and fine but if they don't work out for any reason you are screwed. You can't let them leave in free agency because they're such a big part of the infrastructure so you overpay them and bloat the cap. If they get hurt, well then the roster starts to look pretty bad because there's no depth behind them because you were picking cherries instead of building a good roster. You put more pressure on all your picks to be successful when you make less picks.

If you harvest every year it's a different story. Then you have depth to cover injuries and you have cheap stars that emerge from the draft now and then.

If you're a bad evaluator of talent you become convinced that talent is scarce and then you trade up whenever you can to get the few "good" players out there.

If you just sit and make picks you often get pleasantly surprised by what is sitting there waiting for you on the late round picks that other guys traded away to move up. Elvis Dumervil was a 5th round pick. Terrell Davis was a 5th round pick. Tom Brady was a 6th round pick.

None of those guys would get found by the Jets because they're part of Darrelle Revis, David Harris, Shonn Greene, Dustin Keller and the like.

Oh, and if you're a bad evaluator of talent you almost never hit on a late round pick anyway, because you're a bad evaluator of talent. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    haha

As a Jets fan, I feel like the time leading up to a draft is more fun than the actual season at times :).

Great post! I agree with everything you said.
ALthough, gotta admit, moving up 11 spots for Revis was pure accidental genius. Hey, they had to hit on one of em, right?

LOL, for what its worth, Gruden's QB camp blew me away with Nassib. I liked him best all along, but then I realized even more. I think you CAN trade up for the QB you love. And Nassib is a polarizing QB, but if very respected ppl like Gruden and Cossell love him, then I guess it has to be considered.

I would love for them to trade down and take Eddie Lacy, nobody has mentioned Lacy at all. But I think they need to take a Qb, so perhaps Manuel in round 2. My whole thing is, why waste a whole year without a QB. Because then year 2 is gonna be spent on a rookie QB, then Idzik is in year 3? A 3-year rebuild plan, ? ... that is unheard of.

What's going on is anything you hear the days leading up to the draft is BS. Jets aren't taking a QB early, you can write it in stone.

I really thinks the Jets want to take a QB, but are worried if the guy they pick doesn't work out. Well that's the NFL, you gotta at least try.
I am starting to think this time next year we will be saying that this is the weakest crop of QB's. Not convince with Bridgewater, Boyd or Manziel.

Idzik pick your favourite QB this year and pull he trigger whether it's at #9, #13 or later!!!

I'd be thrilled if we got Boyd next year. I was hoping he'd come out this year.

I'm not going to be surprised if he goes much earlier than we think he will. In this class I could see him going as the second QB as early as the late 1st round.

He's got all the tools you want out of an NFL starter but he hasn't really had the opportunity to show them off because his teams have been weaker than most of the QB's in this class.

I think Teddy Bridgewater is the next great NFL QB. Praying the Jets can draft him next year.
