1st-Barkevious Mingo, OLB 1st-Tavon Austin, WR 2nd-Desmond Trufant, CB 3rd-Tyler Wilson, QB 4th-Jonathan Franklin, RB 5th-Dion Sims, TE 6th-Zeke Motta, S 7th-Chris Baker, G Thoughts?
I strongly dislike the first four rounds of the draft, like the fifth, and don't know about 6-7 to comment.
Don't like it at all. Should be better pass rushers at 9 and if not go for Warmack/Cooper instead, not a fan of the Austin pick he's too small and if we're already building our team to be able to catch out of the backfield he's not needed there either, don't think we need to take a CB that high rather take a OLB/DE/TE, don't know much about Wilson to be honest, Franklin would be great there but he won't last to that, don't really know the last three picks all that well.
I think Trufant is the best CB in the draft and Franklin is going to be really good. I'm with you on the rest. I hate the idea of Mingo. He may end up being really good but I don't see him as an immediate impact player. At least with OL you know you're building as opposed to taking a gamble with Mingo. I've been saying all along that we need to hit a homerun in this draft or Idzik will be gone in 4 years.
The small receivers are the future. As teams have countered the bigger receivers (Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald) with bigger Corners (Richard Sherman) the smaller/quicker receivers will be the next big thing.
I know there are a lot of people on here with big opinions hate Mingo, but don't let that fool you. Mingo WILL be a stud. He would be our first 12+ sack guy that we have had in a LONG time
12+ sack season from Mingo? In a league where he'll be facing better offensive lines week in and week out than he did last year, even though he didn't produce statistics like that to begin with? It could happen, maybe it just clicks for him at some point, but I don't feel comfortable at all with him at the 9 or 13.
One thing I'm not quite grasping, and this isn't just to you - its to most of the board - whats the benefit of getting an immediate impact player this year if his ceiling isn't as high? The Jets are (more than likely) not going to compete this year. If a rookie has to go through some growing pains/development this year and is ready to make an impact in year two, I would much rather that as opposed to a player who will make an impact this year but won't grow much as a player (if it wasn't obvious, the players I had in mind when writing this are Mingo & Jones)
I have read from multiple sources and Mingo himself said that he played more contain this year and he was not schemed to sack the QB. Also, when describing a separate player, (SPENCER WARE) the analyst said that Les Miles try to force people to play to his system rather than talent and that is why you sometimes see impacts from LSU guys that are unexpected.
If you had a player on your team who you thought was a dominant pass rusher would you use him more to set the edge and scheme for other players to rush the passer instead?
Wouldn't have an issue with this draft. Add playmakers at RB and WR, as well as OLB. Wilson gives a developmental QB, Sims is solid tight end depth, and same with Motta at safety. That said, if Carradine fell to our pick round 2, I'd be frustrated we took Mingo so high.
If Jordon Could Be Subsituted For Mingo and the rest of the draft fell this way that would be solid. All areas of need filled. Nice job.
I like everything except Mingo (and, to a lesser extent, Austin...but I'm coming around with him). It definitely fills our needs, but the success of this draft depends on whether these players are BPA at the time we pick them.
