If Revis has issues in camp with his knee or just in general the Bucs are going to pay that $16M and they'll probably pony up next year as long as the struggles do not continue. That's what having the 13 pick invested means for him. If Revis had signed the same deal with the Jets and torn his knee in camp he'd have been a cut. No investment on the Jets part at that point and no reason to spend $16M watching him go through his 2nd rehab in a row. There's no way Revis was taking a no-guarantee contract from the Jets. His guarantee with the Bucs is that they gave up some serious value for him and can't afford to whiff on it totally.
I think if he is "just very good" they will blame it on the OC, the new O, adjusting to the NFC South and not being fully recovered from the injury..whaever excuse they use he will still get another year unless of course he is dead, either literally or figuratively (hurts the knee even worse).

For the record, I'm not speaking to the point of him being outright cut (that'd be pretty black and white - catastrophic injury and whatnot), but instead to the possibility that he's being paid to perform legendarily, isn't returning those results, and TB needs to lower his salary. Overpaying $8-$10 million, even for just one year, is a death knell in this era of the salary cap (as we know all too well). I think that becomes the real problem area for TB, considering they open up a can of worms in seeking a restructure based on on-field performance.
2000 and 2006 were more important because Parcells was headed out after 2000 and the Jets were in absolute tatters after 2005. This is the third most important draft in the last 13 years, although for us it is the most important because we have to live with the results in 2013/14/15. The 2013 Jets may look like they're in bad shape at this point heading into the draft but the 2006 Jets were much worse off. The difference is that we have lots of cornerstones on the team and no QB to tie things together. The 2006 Jets had a QB who was good but in tatters at that point and very few cornerstones to build around. 2012 Jets cornerstones: MoWilk, Mangold, D'Brick, Harris, Cromartie, maybe Coples and Holmes. 2005 Jets cornerstones: Chad, Mawae (35 years old), Ellis, Vilma, Rhodes. 2013 the Jets have Revis leaving town for the 13 pick. 2006 the Jets had JAbe leaving town for the 29 pick. This team is light years ahead of where the Jets were in 2005 as they contemplated their rebuild.

Well, for 2013 the Bucs couldn't find people to spend their cap space on at this point unless they wanted to pick up the picked over free agents and overpay them as well. In 2014 you're right, although unless Revis is seriously injured I think the Bucs keep him on at $16M for the year. For people wondering if Revis is going to come back at his normal level of play I think the odds are good he does as long as he stays healthy. I think that level of play will not mean as much in somebody else's defense but he's still going to be very good. If he gets hurt, well those are the breaks and I am glad it is on somebody else's dime.
one player a team wanted enough to give up a very high first round pick, the other player no team is willing to give up any pick for. not really a surprise which would be off the team first.
Why pick on Wilson when a team could basically throw to wide open T.E.'s or backs all game? IMO Wilson will get exposed big time if the Jets have LB's capable of covering other teams backs and TE's...
No it really depends on how productive the #13 pick turns out. If that player turns out to be VG or Vlad or Kyle W then we got shafted. If. however he turns out to be 10 time All Pro then we can smile :sad:
We'll get shafted with the 13th pick no matter what. Talent-wise, that player would've probably gone in the late 1st/early 2nd in 2014.
There's no way the Bucs can give up the #13 pick & cut Revis after only one season. What if Revis was simply slow to recover from surgery & turns into his usual dominant self in 2014? Unless Revis totally sucks out there, they need to give Revis at least 2 seasons to prove they didn't make a mistake in this trade. You bring up the 8-10M overpayment but Bucs are one of the best salary cap managed teams in the league. They can afford to dish out the money in Revis second year & maintain their roster.
