Article Here - By Steve Serbey Ok, depending upon your view of Serbey this is either par for the course or out of left field. Personally, Serbey is one of the bigger fair weather writers the NY Jets have. He's all positive when things are clicking and a doomsayer when they are not...just from what I see. Now, what really torpedoes this article and any credibility that he has/had was the bolded comment about Quarterback. Really, Steve? Every draftnik, pundit, GM and personnel man in the league and media (except Serbey) has this QB class as one that is weaker than Captain America before super soldier formula! Also, on another note, I have a nagging feeling that Rex Ryan takes this team to 8 or 9 wins depending upon health. He didn't have Revis LAST year and if he had his #1 receiver back and a QB operating at least average we borderline make the playoffs last year...or we are in the playoffs. One way or another we will have at LEAST average QB play this year and I suspect a far more potent running attack. Of course, time will tell. But I will say this, in regards to the article, Rex Ryan may be a loudmouth at times but there is no doubting he can coach. He is, arguably, one of the top 1 or 2 defensive minds in the game and his head coaching has come along. No, I do not believe Idzik is handicapping him for the season. Everyone knows this needed to happen. Revis did NOT deserve $16 mil a year...period. Ryan will coach his ass off this year and if the Jets won't be able to see it another team will and lord knows how that could play out....
I still feel next years team has potential. I watched the Colts do this same exact cleansing last year and were able to play well. There are a load of factors that go into every NFL teams success, Wilk and Coples should bea force next year, perhaps our run game returns to its 09 form. So many factors.
I'm excited. I'm still not sure if Rex is a lame duck because so many things are going into this year. The Jets are really considering this a rebuilding year, you can't really fire Rex if they are competitive but go 5-11, 6-10 again.
The Jets will be better all around compared to the 2012 team.....Rex can still coach a great defense and proved he didn't need Revis last year. On offense he has his first truly legit established OC with history. Not a guy he inherited or picked up thinking the Jets were still a ground and pound team. Team has more upside than downside and if you think Revis won't hold out for guaranteed money is he has a decent 2013 you are out of your mind. Imagine the paper next season if that happened in NY? All of the sudden you have a huge salary cap hit, the guy is holding out, the team is once again held hostage.
I think he needs to go 8-8 -- the last 7 games have 6 winnable games on the list. If not expect the Bill Cowher talk to start very early in the season.
His presser is going on right now. He did not say anything about the Jets or the fans in his opening comments.
Really? See if we don't draft a QB I don't see how you can hold Rex to 8-8. I think you need to see how the team plays and what the future looks like. I think it's a very fluid thing right now
I'm assuming Idzik & Woody have some kind of plan. If the plan is to ditch Rex after this year I'd like to hear the reasoning behind that. Why would they want to keep him around for this year if he wasn't in the long term plans? It just doesn't make much sense to me - I suppose someone could convince me otherwise if they made a good case. If they don't have a plan, well then we're already up the creek regardless of who the coach is.
I think Sanchez has a strong bounce back year in this offense. If he fails to do that and loses his job in camp - which would be upsetting to see him not bounce back - garrard can toss the ball pretty nicely. He had the job won in Miami last season. There in no QB you take this draft and think future star -- next year there will be a few guys rated way too high that the Jets won't be in play to select.
Yeah, that's why I think Rex doesn't need to hit 8 wins. I think it will be if the team is competitive, if he doesn't create a media firestorm, and if there is some semblance of an offense with MM. Rex can keep the defense steady while we wait for that QB, which is something not very many other coaches could do. Granted it all depends on next season, but I don't buy that Rex is on a short leash or on the hot seat. I think he might be in the long term plans of the Jets as of right now. His performance this season could change that obviously.
I think if the defense is still top 8 and the young guys take that next step they might find it tough to drop a guy that is one year away from a truly elite defense again and did it without Revis.
I dont understand why thinking long term instead of short term means rex is a dead man walking. Rex didnt create this mess tanny did. Firing rex after this season is a mistake
I agree - rex came in 4 years ago and the team wasn't supposed to do anything -- he brought an attitude to the team from top to bottom.
Ryan and his staff are now going to be judged on player development not scheme. Hard to say how this plays out. We could have a bad season with a lot of young guys playing well at the end of the season and Rex might well be judged as having done a very good job?
Until Rex's defense falls out of top 10 ( which we didn't last year with our sorry roster ). I think/hope he stays. If we can get a decent pass rush with Coples Ellis Wilk, I'll be more excited to watch our defense this year then any year previous with Revis. I don't think we should draft a CB either. To big of shoes to fill, and we really haven't seen what Wilson can do in the slot with some experience.
I like the low expectations the media is setting. I do think you're on to something here though. Yeah, watching Rex coach is a treat. I don't know that I have ever seen anybody shift fronts as much as he does after the snap. 6 guys lined up between the tackles, 4 down and 2 standing and at the snap 3 of them are on the move flooding the short passing zones. A play later the same 6 guys, the same 6 slots and all of them are going for the QB. It's just fun to watch and also pretty effective.
I don't think it is a set number of wins. It is about performing better than expectations. If they start out strong and collapse down the stretch again Rex is gone. (IMHO) If they start of slow and finish strong Rex will stay. Even if the records are exactly the same.
I can hear the conversation now between Idzik Rex and Marty. Rex can you still deliver a top ten defense with out Revis Rex: No doubt Marty: Can you have a good offense without some talent infusion from the draft Marty: No effin way Trade Revis get some offensive talent in here.
Rex has not had control of this team in two years and still doesn't. He can't control the players and has no clue about running a team. He has been involved with every deal and let Tanny take the fall by himself. Anything less than 9 wins and Rex needs to go. We didn't have MEvi$ last year so no loss. We get our hurt players back and have a much better OC. ADD in 3 picks in the top 40 and we should be instantly better. Not one guy we lost or let leave had a good season last year aways except our safeties. So we lost two players and a by signing the brother we didn't lose all that much. I have faith we can get to nine wins, anything less than 8 wins would demand his firing.
