Is defensive scoring including fumbles returned for 6 points, interceptions returned for 6 points, and ST giving up TDs? Or is there a site that takes all of that out and reranks the D based on points they gave up only when they were on the field?
They did not come off as desperate. They came off as knowing they were the only bidder and the Jets weren't renegotiating with Revis. The Jets for whatever reason (Woody) wanted to no part of Revis and the Bucs knew this. The Bucs were not desperate, they could have waited it out if they wanted to. The Jets were the one who everything to lose if they couldn't deal Revis before the draft.
Anyone arguing that we are only getting one premium pick is simply to stupid to recognize that the NFL has a salary cap. We didn't just get one premium pick, next year we essentially clear between 12 and 16 million a year, what Revis had to be paid. That can sign a couple of proven NFL players.
Idzik didn't fail. He got what he could. If the Jets waited until the draft, TB drafts a CB and the trade market for Revis is zero unless you were banking on a mid-season trade. Then, what if Revis isn't the same? Then where does his value go? Do you think you were even getting a first rounder for him if he comes out and plays like crap? Everyone assumes that Revis will be the same player because Peterson and Manning defied the odds.
no, you should not be happy that we lost our best player. but that wasn't the reality of the situation. the reality is we lost our best player who we were going to lose anyway because our GM clearly stated he would not pay Revis what Revis was able to sign for. if you are arguing from the position of the former and ignoring the latter, you aren't arguing reality, you are arguing fantasy. I am not happy we lost Revis. I wish Revis wanted to stay a Jet more than getting that $16 million was his main priority or I wish he hadn't tore his ACL and we could have eliminated any concern about his knee from potential trade partners and had more teams interested in him. but that isn't reality.
He's off the books, with Sanchez/Holmes as probably off books next year with Harris 50/50 off the books also. When you don't hit the lotto on the QB, this is how you rebuild.
Exactly, the key isn't just the draft picks we got. Idzik is going to have an opportunity to really shape the team. If Idzik has the goods the Jets are going to be in very good shape in a couple of years. Now if he doesn't and it's a complete unknown we aren't going anywhere with or without Revis.
This. IMO, the Bucs deal with Revis is also another "Band-Aid" deal. Revis has his immediate $16m, basically guaranteed. I don't think the Bucs will be cutting him after 1 season (barring any crazy injury). So this deal is effectively a 2 year $32m deal - guaranteed. After he has proven he is fully healthy, if he is, he will most definitely sit out for a new contract, which will give him more leverage into getting the "guaranteed" dollars up front. Did the JETS get ripped off? I mean who knows. It is still early to make judgement. Could they have used 1 more pick? Yes. But, clearly no one was willing to make that offer. Jets had no leverage when making the deal, and Revis had no leverage other than asking for $16m when signing. Lets wait until Thursday, then we can all bash on the deal if it is warranted. If this is a stepping stone to making a move on Thursday (trading out of 9), then who knows, the deal might just be worth it.
You just reiterated my point..the offense sucked..we need playmakers on offense and the defense will hold it's own. It may not be first in the league every year but it will be fine without him.
Yep. If Idzik messes up, he messes up and we have to restart. But he got rid of one the things weighing him down, Revis. Also he got rid of the veterans which were obvious cuts and decided Keller/Greene weren't worth it. Next year he'll get rid of the few other players he feels are weighing down the Jets and construct the team how he wants. If you're getting a new GM, you have to let him go all in fixing the team, and that's what for now it seems Idzik is doing.
the problem for Revis is that it is hard to sit out with 4 years remaining on his contract. the only leverage Revis would have in that situation is if the Bucs don't want to pay him $16 mil per season, but don't want to cut him, so they would be willing to rework his contract and give him guaranteed money up front and he loses value of the contract on the back end like all NFL contract eventually doing. but that is a huge gamble on Revis' part, because the Bucs can hold onto him for as long as they want with zero risk for any salary cap problems in the subsequent years. this is a very odd deal for Revis.
The trade was sadly necessary. A $16M/YR great cornerback is a luxury the JETS simply could not afford. Is he great? Without question, but he is damaged goods and a 13th overall first round pick is about as good as it was going to get. Good decisions aren't always popular. It hurts. But we sold our football souls for 2 good runs 3-4 years ago. The piper is being paid. Long range, I'd like to see them keep Sanchez as starting QB for no other reason than to keep us in the running for J. Clowney in 2014. Add Bill O'Brien as HC and we are back. Until then, we suffer...
My question, however, is whether this deal puts the Bucs in a better position down the road, and whether the same would have been true for the Jets if they had signed him to the same deal. If, under your scenario and assuming all is well physically, after two years Revis holds out, the Bucs now can go to the rest of the NFL and say we are trading a rehabilitated all world cornerback who needs a new contract. Knee is no longer an issue. What is the price? Is it higher than a 1 and a 3? In the meantime they just got two years of play out of Revis. I'm not sure. Just sayin....
$16 million for a 28 year old CB with a surgically repaired knee on a team that isn't going to compete for a SB in the next 2 years is just not a luxury they can afford.
I see it this way, Revis is probably locked in for 3 years 48 at least. Solid deal. If Revis still feels he is in his prime, he can try holding out. If the Bucs feel they are close to the SB, he can force the Bucs to pay up otherwise they lose a valuable piece to that SB run if they want to cut him. It's risky, but if the Bucs go into the season coming with SB expectations or a successful championship game run the year before, he has the Bucs because it would be August and TB would have no way to replace him. If the CB market blows up for some reason, Revis can hold out and take advantage of this. Because of this, if the Bucs cut him, he can hit the open market and scoop up the market. For both above situations, Revis still has to be Revis so he is very confident in himself. Now the problem occurs if Revis doesn't become Revis again or the Bucs start to struggle. The Bucs have no incentive to hold onto Revis of they are struggling after 2-3 years and might cut him. Nobody should be throwing at 16 million at him again. If Revis starts to struggle and not become Revis again, the Bucs can cut him. He's very confident he's coming back to Revis level of cornerback, so good for Revis to believe in himself. He could have a chance to force the Bucs into whatever he wants in 3-4 years, or he could be cut. Either way he's already gotten 3-4 years of 16 million. Worst case for him, he is absolutely terrible the next 2 years and he gets cut making 32 million. I don't really a scenario he gets cut after 1 year unless something drastic happens

I don't think Revis can hold out on that deal. The public perception of him holding out on a deal that paid him $16M a year would be really negative. It's easy to go to where he was with the Jets often and say that he's going to hold out for every penny but the problem is that he's already got every penny in the $96M deal, just no guarantees past the first couple of years. I don't think there's any pressure on the Bucs to get him in during a holdout if that's what he chooses to do. They've given him no money up front so they don't even have to worry about trying to recoup bonus money. They can just sit back and wait for him since he doesn't get his paychecks until he shows up.
Revis is a 2 year rental....Josh Freeman will implode putting them behind the 8 ball with Revis and Vincent Jackson and now searichng for a new QB. They will be in re-tool mode in 2015 and Revis will be looking for a new home. Basically comes down to him getting more guaranteed money that Clay Matthews - $31 million for Clay - want amounts to $32 million for Revis (over two years)
