Probably not the sexiest draft you'll see, but certainly one of the safest. The rebuilding has begun and it all starts with the draft. 1.9) Chance Warmack G Alabama 6-2 317 Unless we trade down, Warmack could be best option based on other options being eliminated. Dion Jordan should be the pick, but he won’t be available. But we also cannot pass on a sure thing guy, especially with a position need pick. I can’t see how our offense wouldn’t improve with a better O-line. By no means am I sold on Willie Colon. I am hopeful Vlad could show us something after 3yrs on the team!!!!! Also, its my opinion that the only decent guards in the draft are Warmack, Cooper, Warford (too much reach in 2nd/won’t be there in 3rd) and Alvin Bailey (reach in 3rd / might not be there in 4th) and I’m not sold on guys like Kyle Long or Brian Winters. 2.39) Zach Ertz TE Stanford 6-5 249 I like giving Jeff Cumberland some playing time, but in no way do I consider him a #1TE. It really would be interesting to see if Hayden Smith is everything Tannenbaum said he was during practice. But then again, that’s coming from Tannenbaum. Ertz is a great athlete and a smart player that will become a stronger run blocker in the years to come. I envision him developing into a mismatch to cover – something this team has dramatically lacked. Great body control & solid hands. Greatest assets are route running & fluidity. A lot of Heath Miller comparisons. I think we have to grab a tight end here, because as with the guards, I really don’t see any good options later in the draft. 3.72) Corey Lemonier 3-4 OLB Auburn 6-3 255 Lemonier has been up & down for me since Sept. I’ve been hot & cold on the guy. Combine #s were great, - but he didn’t look to hot during the season. But when I look back at some of the games, he’s drawing a lot of double-teams. Great burst off the snap & a pretty good motor. But his season #s were down. Then again, as a team, Auburn had some turmoil in 2012. But I like the fact that he’s declared his intent to play LB & worked to show the coaches that. 4.106) T.J. McDonald FS USC 6-3 219 All we have is Dawan Landry. I am hopeful about Antonio Allen. I think Josh Bush moves to CB where he played in college before switching to safety his senior year. McDonald has the bloodline (father was Tim McDonald for the 49ers) He has the flexibility to play strong or free safety. He has good instincts and is a hard hitter, too. Last year he was a projected 1st rounder. I think he got a bad rap because of the overall USC D. But he had 112 tackles & 7 TFLs last season. Great size to cover the bigger TEs. McDonald also got NFL experience with Monte Kiffin running the D @ USC past couple of seasons. 5.141) Cornelius Washington 3-4 OLB Georgia 6-4 265 I hope he lasts this long. At this point in the draft its certainly worth it to grab a guy with this kind of athleticism & size to play either 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE when we switch. Everyone else seems satisfied with re-signing Calvin Pace, signing Antwan Barnes & having Guy McIntyre. Not me. We HAVE to double dip at OLB. I think Washington was just misplaced at Georgia playing 3-4 DE & I’m willing to take a 5th round chance to find out. 6.178) Ricky Wagner OT Wisconsin 6-6 310 Somehow, someway Wisconsin O-linemen usually work out. Wagner was a board favorite last year – proj 2nd rounder from some members before he said he was going back to school. His stock plummeted. But I believe he could be a capable starter. Austin Howard is resigned for 1yr only. We need to leave ourselves options after the 2013 season. These 6th & 7th round picks are critical opportunities to find possible starters. 7.215) Sean Renfree QB Duke 6-3 220 As much as I admire Greg McElroy’s efforts to be prepared, work hard & manage a game, -- there isn’t the slightest bit of possible potential for him to be considered an NFL long-time starter. Renfree has been a favorite of this board for a while. He drops this far only because of that injury in the January bowl game. If was healthy & worked out at the combine & pro days, he would end up going in the 4th round. You never know – guy like this could be trade bait down the road – shit, people were asking about Brian Hoyer up in New England.
I like this draft it fixes alot of needs with quality players.... TJ McDonald the patriot killer 2.0, he is compared to Benard Pollard.
just not crazy about warmack at 9. i feel we could get more bang for our buck with ansah or jones or even austin if you are looking for offense would like to see your top 8 to see who else is available. i like ertz in the 2nd though. morningwig has done some pretty good work with average to below average t.e.'s i would ove to see what he could do with some talent
A guard and a tight end with our first two picks? Nightmare scenario for me. I do like the Rick Wagner pick, though, he would be a huge steal in rd 6.
Really good, I almost considered Renfree and Washington in my mock That said, I probably would re arrange the order of picks 4 through six. Bump Washington and Wagner up a round, drop McDonald down to six
Outside of Warmack at #9 I like it. Would rather have Star there or try like hell to trade down. It seems like Washington has a real good chance of going earlier than the 5th.
My 9th pick of Warmack was based on the following being off the board. 1) Luke Joeckel 2) Eric Fisher 3) Shariff Floyd 4) Dion Jordan 5) Lane Johnson 6) Dee Milliner 7) Ezekiel Ansah 8) Geno Smith But that being said, - I would still draft Warmack even if Geno Smith, Dee Milliner and Ezekiel Ansah were still on the board available when the JETS are OTC. I am very skeptical of Ansah. I'd pass without looking back. Very risky pick. Us Jet fans need to be very very wary of risk these days ----- especially at #9 overall.
I agree with you on Cornelius Washington. Probably my only pipe dream of the mock being available at our 5th rounder. But TJ McDonald will not get out of the 4th round. You can come back to quote me on that if I dont do it myself.
Everybody wants Star but everyone forgets we have Kenrick Ellis. We just have a ton of holes on this team to not fill the immediate needs immediately.
If we got TB's 1st rounder (13), I'd stay with Warmack at 9 and take Cordarrelle Patterson at 13 (even if Austin is still on the board). In the 3rd round (73), I'd probably take Darius Slay CB from Mississippi St. Good opportunity to get some solid young depth, - albeit a starter in the nickel & dime.
It's possible, but I keep thinking back to recent drafts, especially last year and some of the bigger names at safety were still on the board in round six. Not saying your assesment is wrong and obviously what teams are looking for each year changes...
Yes, - certainly true. The safety position, more than any other, drops further in the draft than any other position. No way I would have believed Antonio Allen could've been had in the 7th round last year.
I think we will get that 13th pick via Revis Trade and either have Ansah/Jordan/Mingo/Jones/pass rusher and Warmack or Cooper as well with the 9th pick so it will be the best of both worlds
i get the playing safe deal here. but this team needs play makers on both sides of the ball. based on your top 8, i would be thinking star, austin or jones in that order.
Patterson is bust material ... the kid can't catch. I love Warmack at 9, but if we did get TB's #13, i would much rather see pass rusher at #9 (Jordan, Jones or Mingo - I trust Rex when it comes to drafting Defense even if Wilson didn't pan out) then come back with Cooper at #13. Or trade back in the round with one of the picks, and eyeball Fluker. I understand everyone yellin for receiver help ... but it does appear to be a deep draft, grab one later. Can't plug every hole, but the two most glaring have to be offensive line and pass rusher. I can't see how the Jets don't address one if not both by the end of the 2nd.
Trading back would be a good option too for us... The thing I really like about Patterson is he is explosive and fast which he can lift coverages and he is not scared to go across the middle. Plus he makes people miss which im a fan of . But a Olinemen is a must in the first round for us.
