1. no starting caliber RB 2. two below average guards 3. one average at best RT 4. average (at best) TE, one just joined the sport 5. WRs a mess I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, drop the bluff. We are in dire need of an overhaul.
insert any top 10-15 quarterback on this team and you have a good offense we're likely adding a Guard and Tight End in the 1st 2 rounds of the draft(Cooper and Ertz) seem likely, our WR's are fine as long as they're healthy so I doubt that its a mess you guys need to stop making it seem like we have no talent we have a nice foundation that we can add to and keep moving and again where does trading Revis improve the offense, oh I know lets trade him for the 13th pick and take Tavon Austin, sit the hell down with that nonsense
Of course. But, in my opinion, Revis has the same type of impact on the game that a great skill position player has. I know the secondary wasn't the reason they went 6-10, but just having him on the field makes everything different. As one example, it allows us to get more pressure on the quarterback, meaning maybe teams are getting worse field position, meaning we have better field position, and then the offense is going to do better as well. Having Revis also allows us to not need to double team the opponent's No. 1 WR, which allows us to put more guys in the box, which makes the run defense better.
So I am guessing if he is getting traded before the draft it will be today. League offices are closed on weekends and these things usually happen on the Friday before the draft anyway. Of course only if we will give TB time to check him out and negotiate a new deal..otherwise it could be any time.
Maybe now that we have MM as our OC. I still think the offense is toxic and needs a lot more work. "Good" offense is a little exaggerated. Adding a top 10-15 QB would take the offense from pathetic to watchable. Top 15 QBs such as Stafford, Flacco, Matt Ryan, etc wouldn't do well with the weapons on offense and the coaching we once had on this side of the ball EDIT - To add to the Revis argument - I think he's going to end up staying IMO. They will back down their demands and I think he'll get resigned
This only holds true for some teams but not the good teams with top QBs who spread the field with multiple options (Manning, Brady, Rodgers, etc). Revis can only take away 1 option, whereas a dominate pass rusher can potentially take away all options by attacking the point of attack (the QB). If you're lucky enough to find that dominate pass rusher you lock him up with big money. The same isn't true for a great DB unless its Neon Deion who also gets TOs and TDs.
You speak like Jets doubled the #1s all year long last year. They didn't. If at all, Ryan made Revis better more than Revis made Ryan better. Make no mistake about that. Again, another sorely-mistaken case. Any 10-15 QB may improve the offense - that's a given. Good offense? Are you kidding me? Some QBs perform decently even when they take their share of beatings - in that case, they usually have a play maker to bail them out more often than not. I am not saying Sanchez is that top 10-15 QB by any stretch, but his supporting cast was equally as atrocious as Nacho has ever been, if not worse. Are you suggesting Tom Brady could direct a game winning drive with that cast of sorry ass receivers? When he gets a DL in his face almost immediately after the snap? When did that happen in New England anyway?
Good post. I would guess to the extent people pay attention and care that I would be considered a dark sider by many, but I don't think so. I think I am a realist, and when it comes to assessing the roster on O, too many here are too negative. The O suffered last year because of a number of factors, but that did not include a complete lack of talent on O. The problems in order of importance imo were: Mark Sanchez sucks. Sparano was an awful OC. Tied for third was Holmes going out and Hill dropping too many passes. Greene was mediocre and could not play his role in a Ground and Pound offense. OL was hampered by mediocre play at RT and LG. Other factors include that our starting TE disappeared too often and was a liaibility on running plays, and that the Jets' backup Qb was not a real backup, which led to Sanchez continuing to play long after he should have been benched. The OL coach was an idiot, and Ryan did not know enough to overrule his offensive coaches. One of the big factors there has already been fixed when they fired Sparano and hired Marty. Holmes presumably will be back. It remains to be seen where Hill goes. It is nonetheless reasonable to expect improved play at wideout. Greene is gone, and good riddance. I don't expect the current RB's to add up to one of the top groups in the league, but they should do better. Keller's departure may not be addition by subtraction, but it at least clears the picture, and I do think we can see some upside from Cumberland. On the OL, I hope the Jets go OG in the first, or at least second, round, which along with hopefully improvement from Harris and some contribution from Colon could also mean much better play from the OL. Mangold and Ferguson are still quality players. That leaves Qb. Add a mid pack Qb to this team, and you would see along with the other factors a much improved O. Sanchez was and is that bad, and we already have reason to expect improvement elsewhere as I have described above. If that makes me a rose colored glasses wearing homer, so be it. The point is this team is not that far off from being a contender. Revis is young enough that he will still be a great player when the Jets can contend again, which could be as early as 14. In short, don't overhype the problems on O as a reason to give up on the D.
If Revis is traded to Bucs, what do you think the fan reaction will be when he plays against the Jets?
I don't see much of a down side for the Jets in this situation. Worst case, the Bucs don't end up making a deal for Revis, but that doesn't mean that he necessarily walks at the end of 2013-14. Given the risk that he could get hurt this season (and only have ~6M to show for it,) he'd have to be really motivated to make a deal prior to camp. Essentially, he'd either take what we offer on a multi-year deal or take his chances that he may never get a payday again. Add to that, he has agents jabbering in his ear so that they can make their commission. I wouldn't doubt that I'm overlooking something here, so please correct me if I am.
Exactly. Brady to Welker 50 times a game while Mevis watched helplessly. Best way to shut down Brady is a good, consistent pass rush.
You have to look at Revis and how he fits into the team as a whole. Yes Revis only takes away one WR. So then the question becomes, is a teams second WR better than Cromartie? Is their third WR better than Wilson? Most teams simply haven't been able to match up well against the Jets CBs over the past few years. I don't think loading up on corners was a bad idea, we could just never find a great pass rusher to go with them (Gholston, Maybin, Pace, etc). The reason for getting rid of Revis in my mind isn't that he can only cover so much of the field, it's that he wants to be vastly overpaid.
Yeah, yeah..we get it..nobody liked the players on offense, especially Sanchez, but they were the starters and the coaches collectively thought they were the best the team had to offer..now both guards, the TE, the RB, the FB and two of the starting receivers are gone..so please do tell us how they got better and became "not far from a contender" with that?
Of all things, I didn't expect to hear this from you, BB. I'm not as optimistic as you are however; I do not think Holmes should stay. Probably this is his last year if I am the GM. Moreover, while the team has important pieces here and there, they still lack impact players on both sides of the ball. If the OC has to worry about the CB more than the protection schemes overall, that speaks volumes about how putrid the Jets front seven have been at their job. And they still don't have a blue-chip pass rusher that change the complexion of the game. Same goes with offense - well. What can I say. Mark Sanchez. With atrocious fundamentals and shot confidence, what more can we expect out of him anyway? It will remain to be seen how he does in Marty's guidance, but frankly I have no illusions about it. Sanchez was never an accurate passer and he probably never will be. That alone puts huge strain on the receiving end of the passing game - receivers, TEs, and RBs. Now sprinkle in his bone-headed picks here and there; and you have a consistent offensive disaster, regardless of the talent level. For that reason, I was expecting the Jets to spend at least two seasons purging the cap (Thanks, T-Bomb. Go fuck yourself.) and then start anew, with new QBs. The only reason I was advocating for Sanchez starting for the team was simply because I didn't want the newly minted QB to be thrown to the wolves when there is no hope to be had. (Isn't that cruel to Sanchez? Maybe - but who gives a flying f*ck anyway? He sucks, and he is getting paid millions of bucks to suck - he sure can handle that. Right?)
Less than a week to go now. You think there would be something going on by now in regards to either the Jets opening up negotiations on an extension or giving the Buccs permission to speak with his agents or something. I'm wondering if it's not done over the weekend if it happens at all. I highly doubt Tampa does anything while on the clock as they'd still want to get Revis checked out medically and need time to talk extension. Those things alone could take two or three days.
Zach, To be clear, yes, the Jets cannot upgrade their O to a significant extent until Sanchez is gone. And I do not underestimate that as an issue. Whatever might have been done on that front so far this off season to the side, we still can see something happen this off season, and if not, definitely by next season. The bottom line is it is not unreasonable to think that by opening day in 14 the Jets can have a better Qb behind center, and that will be huge to getting the O to play better. Ftr I did not predict the Jets will be a contender in 14, but they can be. Is 15 more reasonable? Perhaps, but imo it is not necessary to wait that long. Sticking to the O, despite all the woes the Jets have Mangold and Ferguson, and they can continue to be the basis for a strong OL, assuming something is invested in the line by way of a high draft pick. RB is also a group we probably saw the bottom last season in terms of performance. I know there is much debate here on wideout and Holmes in particular, but also Hill. I think if Holmes is physically well, he has every incentive to play hard, and probably will. Kerley I am a fan of, and I think if they bring him back Edwards can contribute as well, as he briefly did at the end of hte season. That leaves Hill from the present roster. Yea, I could be posting here at some point next season that he will be seen as another relative bust for Tanny, but I have not given up on him yet by any means. I also was one here who very much welcomed hiring Marty. Maybe that's why I am more optimistic than most. But it's not just Marty - there's very good reason to think Muck will be gone certainly by opening day 14. Can't wait!
If you're the Bucs and you want Revis but you don't want to give up the 13 the easiest thing to do is just wait until after the draft to trade for him. The Bucs do want Revis but they don't want to give up the 13. The only way the Jets can leverage a trade before the draft is if another suitor emerges. As long as the Bucs are the only suitor they can just wait the Jets out until August. If the Vikings had more cap space I'd say they were a potential suitor. They face Rodgers, Stafford and Cutler twice a year each and they cut Antoine Winfield a month ago to create cap space. The problem is that they don't really have the cap space to do a deal anyway. Just under $6M available depending on which source you look at. Revis, BTW, would have a marquee matchup twice a year with Calvin Johnson.
