Notice the old perv at the bottom in the Red Sox sweater and glasses smiling staring at the young teen girl running, while everyone else is running for their lives

This is crazy how in that pic it's almost crystal clear although if he is the guy running from the bomb as it would have appeared he can't be as his pants aren't torn and he is still wearing his hat.

It also kills my theory that Alharbi is the guy who did this as he was tackled and didn't walk away casually.

So after a couple of days of thought I'm going to throw a few ideas out there.

    1. The odds on this being Al-Qaida are low.

It's possible it could be them but the primary argument against that theory is that the casualty rate was so low. Al-Qaida is very good at killing lots of people with bombs. They have done this repeatedly throughout the Middle East and they killed a lot of people in Spain and England also with backpack bombs in trains.

That they have not claimed responsibility is not a reliable determining factor at this point. The London bombings were not claimed until Sept 1st, 2005 although they happened July 7th, 2005. Al-Qaida had teams attempting another atrocity that were foiled by the authorities in the interval. The Spanish bombings in 2004 were never claimed by Al-Qaida although an investigation by the Spanish judiciary assigned responsibility for them to Al-Qaida.

Low lethality is why Al-Qaida seems less likely.

    2. The odds on it being a state-sponsored actor conducting an act of warfare on the US are also pretty low.

The bombings, while horrific, have not significantly harmed any particular US capability by their commission. The target was a soft target that had no value at all from the perspective of international conflict. If this was state-sponsored terrorism all that they've accomplished was to poke a finger in our eye, which is a very small payoff for the level of risk involved, e.g. being at war with the world's lone superpower.

    3. The odds on it being a lone individual are low.

The fact that at least two devices that we know of detonated makes it unlikely that the crime was committed by a single person. It's hard to imagine somebody being able to get both devices in position in that crowd without arousing suspicion. The interval that it took them to set that up would have made everything very unwieldy. If other devices that we do not know about were involved that makes the lone wolf theory even less plausible.

    Which leaves us with:

    4. The odds are very good that this atrocity was committed by a group of non-state actors who either did not have the expertise to create a large number of casualties or did not care too.

It's hard to see them as not wanting to kill a lot of people with the bombs though. It's much easier to see them as just not very effective at doing that.

This has the feel of a Columbine type atrocity to it.

It's a miracle that he survived, look how pale he is, he's seconds from death.

She may have not been near the bomb when it exploded. The Child probably got the full impact

Awful... those 20 something year old girls all smiles unaware in a few moments their lives will forever be changed. So sad to see the little boy waiting for his father to cross the finish line. This is worse than 9/11 in regards that we only saw people from newspaper or news broadcasts but with this we are witnessing people with the emotion of the event enjoying life just seconds away from losing limbs, or worse. Very emotional for me as a dad to look at this picture.

Nah man it's actually quite similar except on 9/11 I was seeing it in real time looking at the people hanging out the windows on the top floor and you knew exactly what was going to happen

Same sense of inevitable dread that's about to follow. It's brutal

And ditto on the kid. That fucker needs to be locked up with a picture of that kid staring at him every single waking moment

His father actually wasn't running in the race, I don't think anyone in the family were. The daughter lost a leg (green fleece above) and the mother I believe had a head injury. Here is a photo of the father and the older son shortly after the bomb.
