Hate it. We completely ignore offense & I think by now everyone knows how I feel about Jones. This would be disasterous.
I can't believe he has Mingo going at 7. I'm okay with this draft though i really want offensive play-makers in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, ideally.
It's really going to be interesting to see where Jarvis Jones goes with the issue he has with his neck.
I'm too lazy to look through all of his teams (well the 8 before us) to see who he had that would have been left at the 9 spot. If he had Mingo going at 7 that would probably imply that a few other good picks were available at the 9 so it depends on who the picked Jones over. In general though, without considering that, I'm fine with Jones at the 9 pick. I don't know much about the G or S to be perfectly honest but I'm not against addressing those positions. That being said you have to figure we also go TE, RB, QB and LB as our other four picks (assuming no trades...which isn't really a safe assumption)...would we not be better served picking a G or S later on and LB, TE, RB and even QB (less so IMO) earlier on?
He had Jimmy Clausen as the 4th best player in the draft in 2010. Sometimes you have blindspots that run deep. The Mingo blindspot is one of those.
Prefer OG Warford in the second if you're going guard. If not, go WR Woods or TE Ertz. With a deep safety class, wait to the 4th or 5th to find our starting FS. Third round get a playmaker or offensive lineman.
I always have liked Jones. He's not the fastest or most gifted but he's a hard nosed football player. He led the nation in sacks and tackles for loss in the best conference in college football. He's more then just combine numbers in my opinion. If he's there at #9 and Dion Jordan is off the board, I want him.
Jones is tough and he's got a real nose for the football. Alabama did mostly neutralize him but they did it the honest way, with a tackle and another blocker most of the time. When Nick Saban spends that amount of effort on an opposing player it's a compliment even if it works.
I agree with this. Shouldn't go DE/G/S with our first three rounders. Obviously the Revis trade factors in, if we get some additional picks (especially a first rounder) then that changes everything. I'd be happy with Jordan and Warmack/Cooper or Vaccaro in the first round...so thats DE and G or S, but it's about quality of the players available.
But where's he fit in Rex's D? He's only so-so at setting the edge, he's never dropped into coverage & doesn't have the length that Rex loves? He may be a good hard nosed player, but he's gotta fit in the scheme too. Melvin Ingram from last year is a similar example.
He plays ROLB and does exactly what he did in college, which is to set the edge in the 3-4 and rush the passer. He's not a small OLB. He's 6'3" 245. He's bigger than Von Miller was coming out of college to give you a frame of reference. He's bigger than Clay Matthews was coming out of college to give you another. Is he a big slow-footed 6'4" 265 guy at OLB? No, do you want a pass rush? If so you want Von Miller or Clay Matthews at ROLB, not some guy who is a tweener playing ROLB after moving from DE.
I haven't watched a split second of film but if you lead the nation in TFL, that tells me you are better than so-so at setting the edge
You do realize Ingram would have been a top 10 pick if he didn't have short arms and trouble disengaging blocks in college. Jarvis Jones was more productive then Ingram and Clowney combined in 2011. This isn't a knock on either Gamecock, Jones was just that dominant. BTW, Jones did drop off in coverage as well. Why make rediculous comments proving you saw him only in one bowl game?
