When did Mingo admit he took plays off? I know Sam Montgomery admitted it at the combine, but I have no memory of Mingo doing the same.
Around the same time ot later, Montgomery brought it up first. Someone asked Mingo if he ever took off plays and he said a few. Also, Montgomery also admitted to betting large sums of money with teammates, and Mingo was part of it. Montgomery is known as a lazy player, Mingo hasn't been known for being lazy, just not focused all the time.
once everyone comes to the conclusion that every single player in this whole damn draft is a risk, then maybe it will make the barkevious mingo pick look better. i guess as a jets fan we've all gotten used to fucking up the draft, but jesus, wanting to select a guard in the top 10 is absurd. like the two best guards in the nfl (marshal yanda and evan mathis) were both taken in the 3rd round. can you guys seriously tell me that selecting a guard in the first round will make this team win more games? you just want the least risky pick, but that's not how you win championships. barkevious mingo is a risk, but if he pays off it will pay dividends.
Well you may want to compile a little research as to the talent on the O-line's of the Ravens and the 49er's then. Staley was a #1 as was Iupoti and so was Davis. OHer was a 1 as was Burk and McKinney. *I will argue that teams are built from the ball out, no question in my mind. take a look at the jets in 09 and 10 if you want to see a real correlation (no woody or Faneca, both #1's as well).
i was strictly talking about guards, not tackles. also, are you talking about matt birk? because he was a 6th round pick from Harvard and Bryant Mckinnie is considered one of the biggest draft busts in the past 10 years, he was suppose to be a new breed of tackle. he eventually got it together, but it took him like 7 years. also, to say our 2009 and 2010 success was because of the oline is foolished. we had much better defense and a better running game (im sure the online was apart of that, but we also had great backs in thomas jones and LT). 2009 and 2010 were some of marks worst seasons statistically, so clearly the oline didn't help there.
I'm not a huge fan of Mingo, and think he'll be another Maybin. However, if Rex really does like him, then I'd be on board. Rex may have flaws, but if there's one thing he knows how to do really well, is have an eye for defense (in particular DE/OLB's).
Well we can disagree then. It would be "foolish" to think that TJ's sucess wasnt a direct result of a former #1 pick AT GUARD out of LSU in Faneca and a former #1 Tackel, Guard, Center out of BC in Woody, a #1 LT in Brick from UV, and a former #1 C out of Ohio State in Mangold. It all starts with the LOS, players like Mingo are nice additional players once the LOS is dominated. I was making the argument that you can impact multipul positions by drafting a Prowl Bowl player on the O-line (gives the QB more time for his lack of wepons to get open, and create holes for sub-par backs). Now after that guy is in place, I am all for drafing guys that are a tad more risky. Our new GM can't miss on the #9, and Mingo would be a huge gamle that a 1st year GM may not be wiling to go all in on... *Even with "some of Marks worst seasons statistically" he was still able to lead his team to the AFC CHamp game twice (shows you that stats mean nothing because we were dominating the LOS).
Both are all raw talent with no technique. You can't be an elite pass rusher if you only have one move (In Mingo's case, speed rushing the edge).
i could be wrong but I don't see anything in Mingo's game that significantly differentiates him from Maybin.
One is a power guy the other is a speed guy. One played in the Big 10, the other in the SEC. One had no hip flexing ability, the other one has very good hips. One had one HUGE year of production the other had multiple years of good not great production. They're completely different body types & personalities. Sorry..I think the whole premise is absolutely foolish. Most DL need work on technique when they come out of school. This is all just Jet fans being afraid of making a draft pick cause of Gholston. You want the pick w/ the least amount of risk...but that's not how the draft work. It's all ABOUT risk & projection.
He's faster, better hips, has the frame to pack on weight like Maybin couldn't. Had multiple years of college production which Maybin didn't. The only thing they have in common is body type & being speed rushers. Maybin & Gholston.Sheesh.
Maybin at least makes sense because the measurables (right now) are similar. I agree Mingo should be able to put on weight more, and hopefully an NFL staff will be able to help with that. Both are speed rushers with good first steps. There's at least a comparison there. Gholston is just typical Jets fans expecting the worst. Mingo has the ability to finally replace John Abraham in this defense as a guy who can get after the quarterback with speed and make plays. We've lacked that for 7 years now. I'm not sold on Mingo, but I'd no longer be upset if we picked him.
Here's Mingo in a nutshell.....you neutralize his first step and it's over, he's out of the play. The Jets need to get the 1st pick right and I trust Idzik in realizing there is a higher risk with Mingo than other options.
Who would you guys rather have if both fell to us at 9 between Mingo or Star? I think Star has more potential to have the better NFL career. I also think it'd be foolish to take Mingo over Jarvis Jones if both are available.
