funny everyone already knows Mingo is gonna suck before taking a snap Imagine if the Jets picked Irvin last year if he got pass Seattle he would have been the target of multiple threads about Rex being dumb, Tanny being dumb, him being a bust, the next Maybin or Gholston and then we got 8 sacks in our D everyone would love him So dont judge a guy before he gets a chance to produce after getting pro coaching and training, I'm not saying he's going to come in and get 20 sacks but if Rex likes him we have to trust him enough to make something happen and Idzik will NOT draft a defensive player that Rex isn't smitten for
Totally get what you're saying & I don't really disagree. In a perfect world Mingo doesn't come off the board until late teens or the 20's given the things he still needs to work on. The problem w/ all these hybrid guys is they all present a ton of risk & have large parts of their game to still work on. When you factor in the impact they have on a football team & how many teams are in need of those qualities..unfortunately i doubt any of them make it past pick 15 or so. Mingo is no exception as a team..even the Jets could fall in love w/ that first step/ability to bend..which is exceptionally rare & the best since Von Miller. Bottom line is this Jet fans: If the Jets are gonna address their pass rusher need early in this draft, chances are they are going to have to reach. Jordan is unlikely to be there while Ansah,Jones & Mingo all present different risks. The reason why I like Mingo more is b/c I think his risks are more manageable & he can contribute early solely as a pass rusher while he refines his game.
Kurt...I think you summed it up in that one sentence. IMO, Idzik isn't going to take the risky pick in round one, he's going to make sure he get's right. That's why I don't see us going after any pass rusher/OLB if Jordan is gone.
Totally agree. None of these pass rushers other than Dion Jordan are a perfect fit for us. If we want to address pass rusher, we're going to take a risk. And Mingo has the highest upside. The question is whether or not we want to take that risk.
Does he really have much lower of a floor than Jarvis? Both are undersized OLBs with questions if they can hold up on the outside, except Mingo doesn't have spinal stenosis. Sure, Jones was more productive in college, but how much does that mean? I agree Mingo is a big risk, and I'm not necessarily in favor of it. Just the more I watch of him, the more I can picture Rex having a field day with him blitzing.
Disagree. At worst he's a part time speed rusher in Rex's scheme ala Aaron Maybin. Ansah may not be able to contribute at all early while he learns proper technique. In the impatient world of the NFL that creates a major risk & very low floor. Jones is a danger b/c he may not have the size to be a 3 down player & may not have the speed/athleticism to be a part time rusher like Mingo can.
I don't know what to make of all this Mingo love either..I understand hes fast...but he wasn't that productive and he's light.. Will I hate him from say one if we draft him? No I won't I will have confidence in the people that know more than me making decisions and putting him in situations to succeed. However I just don't see Mingo being better than other people available at 9...One I like Ansah a lot I like him more than Jordan. Also I like how Jones plays against elite competition and in big games on big plays...he makes big plays at the right time..those are important attributes And if you want to go offense Warmack and Austin will be huge additions on that side of the ball.. So I am not saying I hate Mingo..but he seems like a one trick pony to me and I would rather have Ansah, Warmack, Jones, or Austin over Mingo
Well Maybin got cut in Rex's scheme, so that is a pretty low floor. IMO, Ansah can at the very least come in and set the edge and be a strong player vs the run. He's raw as a passrusher, but has the tools to more than succeed. He also has outstanding football awareness for someone who's only played as long as he has (or short).
Looks like the Browns are in on the Mingo mix? Waay to high if you ask me, but what do I know. The Jets need to pick up Warmack with the 9 as he has impact on more than 1 position. He helps make up for the lack of dynamic players we have on offense by allowing Mark more time in the pocket and creating holes for our RB's. If we aquire the 13, I would look at the back end of our Defense and scoop up Vaccaro. We can find a decent OLB/ Pass rusher in the 2nd with Jamie Collins or in the 4th with the Bucanhan kid from Illinois (Like his size). http://www.kffl.com/team/13/nfl/cleveland-browns
There's only 4 picks I'm comfortable with at 9 Dion Jordan Chance Warmack Jonathan Cooper Kenny Vaccaro I think guys don't see that we need to draft "football" players early and maybe grab a project late I also think Idzik solidifies the O-Line first and takes Cooper similar to how Seattle was built
I don't understand what "football players" means. Does that mean we need to draft a non-premium position? Vaccaro is just as good a value at 9 as Mingo is. Vaccaro has a higher floor, but it's not as if Mingo has no idea how to play football.
I agree that he's undersized to be 6'4" and considered a DE. I personally would like to see us get Star Lotulelei. That guy is scary fast for his size, a bit Haloti Ngataesque. Maybe not 40 wise but that burst after shedding a tackle is quick. He also has great awareness and is considered a high character guy (which I think teams don't put enough emphasis on this quality). Think back when we had Jenks how big of a help it has to have a dominant big man commanding a double team or just blowing up the A. gap freeing up the DE's to wreak havok.
There was a time when I really wanted Star, but if we got him, we'd really have to switch to 4-3 most of the time. Star can work as a nose tackle, but he's not your typical massive 2-gapper. It wouldn't be using him to the best of his ability.
Coples, Ellis, Star, and Wilk is kind of scary up front...Barnes and Pace on passing downs, Kick Coples and Wilk inside...
And we have Ellis who fills that role perfectly. He was a late 1st or early 2nd round talent who fell because of huge character concerns with drugs and the trial. That is straightened out now, and if he can stay healthy, he should be our NT for the foreseeable future.
Damon Harrison too. He was an absolute beast in TC/Preseason & earned some playing time come year's end. He gets a HUGE push into the backfield.
I don't know about everyone else, I just base my concern over his lack of production in 2012, huge red flag. Also, lack of ideal size and admitting he took plays off....I'd pass at #9. Mingo's value is really, at best, a Mid 1st Rd pick, so I wouldn't touch him till after the 16th pick. He's overrated in the Top 10. Maybe Mingo will have a solid NFL career, just not worth the risk at #9 with other less risky talent is available. Just because you're a terrific athlete it doesn't make you a great football player.
I like who we picked first the last 2 years. I have full confidence in Idzik and Rex that they will pick the right guy. That being said, please add me to "I won't like Mingo pick" list.
