I think it's beginning to look more and more like Revis is about to be traded to the Bucs pre draft so I wanted to look at our options around where we would be selecting. The idea is Revis is traded for the Bucs 1st, 3rd and 6th rounder. Obviously the deal could be drastically different but most people have been using those picks for trade scenario's. Anyway here's my 1st attempt at a mock draft ever: Round 1 #9 Our perfect pick here would be Dion Jordan but he will be long gone. When putting this mock together I had the 3 big tackle prospects off the board along with Warmark, Milliner, Smith and Ansah. That would leave us with Mingo, Cooper, Rhodes and Jarvis Jones to pick from. I went with who I believe will be the best player available at 9th overall, the Jets select, NT/DE Star Lotulelei who in my opinion could become a dominant big man in the trenches like Ngata or Raji, to give the Jets an outstanding defensive line long and short term. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_SXmuHoMP4 Round 1 #13 This is where it gets really tricky in my view. Lots of options to go on the offensive side of the ball but I decided to take a guy who could be a very good player in a huge position of need for us. With the 13th pick the Jets go with FS, Kenny Vaccaro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NMkI4Sbo-U Round 2 #39 Again, lots of options here but I'm going to take a guy who I think could be a bit special in the NFL with our 2nd round pick to help our huge pass rush need, the Jets select OLB, Alex Okafor. Even though he doesn't have elite quickness, I believe he could still play at OLB and rush the passer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k1g1vmEieA Round 3 #72 Time to get to work on the offensive side of the ball, the Jets select G/OT Brian Winters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQSSxqnJXbk&feature=youtu.be Round 3 #73 Need to go find some play makers to improve the offense so the Jets take the best tight end still available in the 3rd round, Jets select TE, Travis Kelce. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtYA0VQGBLM Round 4 #106 It time to add a wide receiver to our roster to help bolster the ranks out wide. The Jets select WR, Kenny Stills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epOaB2td4YA Round 5 #141 Big risky pick here but Marcus Lattimore is still on the board and the Jets decide to take a chance on the kid, let him rehab and hopefully return to form to be an asset for the franchise in the future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iova6SfF0V0 Round 6 #178 Going with offense again, the Jets select Guard Earl Watford. Round 6 #181 Jets select SS Robert Lester to compete with Landry, Bush and Allen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M3uV33Tqy0 Round 7 #215 Another risky pick where the Jets take a big chance on a huge physical specimen who might amount to nothing. The Jets select, defensive end Lawrence Okoye. With his prior professional rugby background while also having football in his blood due to his father having played American Football. Obviously being an Olympic athlete along with his apparent good showing at the super regional combine, he could be a great developmental pick in the late rounds. It's definitely worth a late round pick. On a side note Margus Hunt was a former world junior discus champion and his transition to American Football has been solid to say the least. The Jets starters for the 2013/14 season would be: DEFENSE ----------------------FS, Vaccaro-----------------------SS, Landry---------------- CB, Cromartle----------------------------------------------------------CB, Wilson --------------------------------ILB, Harris------ILB, Davis------------------------- --------OLB, Okafor----------------------------------------------OLB, Barnes----- --------------------DE, Wilkerson---NT, Lotulelei---DE, Coples------------------- OFFENSE -----LT, Ferguson--LG, Winters--C, Mangold--RG, Colon--RT, Howard---------- WR, Holmes-------WR, Kerley------------------------------TE, Kelce-----WR, Hill ----------------------------RB, Goodson-------QB, Sanchez----------------------- Now I fully understand people will hate 3 defensive picks with first 3 selections which are 3 top 40 picks but I just thought those 3 picks would set our defense up long term for success. The rest of the draft is about trying to get the best player available and adding some depth to the offensive side. Also as a side not the pick numbers might not be 100% right, I checked it quickly just so feel free to correct the numbers if you wish. My idea was to solidify our defense as a top 5 defensive team long term in 2013 and then look to bring in offensive weapons in 2014 with hopefully a franchise QB in the 1st. Anyway, it's my first ever attempt at a mock draft so be gently haha but all comments are more than welcome.
Rex Ryan can take mediocre talent on D and have a top 12 defense. You want to use the first 3 picks all on D, even after our last 3 1st round picks have all been on Defense? We need offense, the D can't pitch shut outs. If we have two 1st round picks, we need one of them to improve our offense, whether it is trading down for a guard, te or wr.
I think we definitely have to work on the offense, but that defense you drafted is built to be a force for years. 5 of the front 7 would be 23 or younger (and probably dominant too) and the secondary would still be far above average especially if Vaccaro does as well as he should. Man, that defense would be downright terrifying. But then again the offense would still be average to below average. I don't know too much about Winters but that o-line would probably still need some work. I like adding depth at receiver and at the very least the offense would be better than last year with all of those injuries. If Hill starts using showing some of his potential and Holmes gets back to full health than receivers are suddenly a pretty strong position. I'd be pretty happy with this draft even though two defensive day 1 picks probably wouldn't go over too well.
Looks more like a pipe dream draft than a realistic draft. Lattimore wont be there in the 5th and as great as Star is I'm not sure taking a 3-4 DE AGAIN for our first selection would be very smart (no, Star is not a good fit at NT). Good effort on the mock but needs work/ a sense of realism.
I know it's controversial but I wanted to make a different than normal mock draft where I looked at things and thought we could build a defense that would last for the next 5 years with these early picks. Then focus more on the offensive side next season. I'm not asking the defense to pitch shut outs but we're in rebuilding mode for the long term so why not build a monster defense and then be able to focus on the offensive side of the ball next year going forward? I totally 100% understand people not liking the defensive picks with all our higher picks but I just thought they we're good options with Star being a beast, Vaccaro playing a huge position of need for us. In what regard? If you mean all the early defensive choices then yes I agree but I'd like to think each selection is roughly the same round they are going to be selected in. There isn't any huge reaches or anything as far as im aware. Lattimore has been projected all over the shop draft wise but I've seen most of them saying 4-5 round picks so you could be completely justified to say getting him in the 5th is a reach but not beyond the realms of possibility. About Star. He played quite a bit of nose tackle at Utah and all the draft websites have him down as being able to play nose or de in a 3-4 so why isn't Star a good fit as nose tackle? BJ Raji is a 6'2, 335lb's nose tackle selected 9th overall so why can't Star as a 6'2, 315lb odd play nose tackle? I mean Star could even add weight to bulk up more to hold down the middle. What makes you think he can't play nose tackle? The options he would give us to play multiple fronts would be insane, the 46 defense could be fantastic with Star in there as Ryan has played more and more multiple fronts last season.
I like this draft......although I doubt the team selects defense for the first three picks...you did get players for need positions...and good ones too. I agree with your philosophy that the Jets may want to address the defensive defections this year and concentrate on the QB position in 2014.
That's not a bad draft with a couple of changes. The 39 pick can't be a defensive player if the first two picks were on that side of the ball. The 106 really needs to be a QB if the Jets didn't take one earlier. Dysert, Jones, Wilson, one of those guys is going to be there on the 106 and the Jets need to take them there. Vaccaro is an edgy pick on the 13 but it's not that far off where he is going to go. If the Jets have decided he's going to be a real plus player at safety despite being a 4.6 speed guy then he's a take there.
