Br4dw4y, I usually agree with you on a lot of things, but I think you are DEAD wrong here. The Jets are in dire need of a back to compliment Goodson and Ivory fits that need perfectly. He is a strong, fast, powerful runner that this team has been lacking for a long time. He, right now, is better than all the prospects in the draft. He is proven talent in the NFL. We NEED a guy like this
He's the perfect complement to Goodson in the same way that Jay Fiedler was the perfect backup for Chad.
I like Ivory but we better not give up a 2nd for him. A 4th is the most I'd give up. I get that he is far down on their depth list because Sproles is criminally underrated and fits that offense so well. Still a 2nd round pick for a 2nd string RB is too much.
The analogy is that Jay Fiedler was a game manager capable of stepping in for Chad if he went down and bringing many of the same qualities to the field that Chad did, albeit at a slightly lower level. He was also injury-prone like Chad and incapable of passing effectively against a pressure defense much like Chad. Ivory is another low carries back with success in the limited opportunity that he has had. He's another guy who wasn't seen as good enough to warrant a commitment by his current team. He's another guy who has been buried on the depth chart. He's also injury-prone. Having Goodson and Ivory as the Jets key acquisitions at RB is going to increase the chances that Bilal Powell has to play a major role for the Jets next season. Just as adding Jay Fiedler to Chad increased the chances that Brooks Bollinger was going to hit the field in 2005.
On paper, Fiedler was a good backup since he had experience playing, and playing fairly well, but both were injury-prone. But then I read people wanting the Jets to draft Marcus Lattimore. And none of these college running backs have proven they can stay healthy in the NFL. Ivory is a good back. I'd trade a 4th for him. Quarterback isn't running back. You can afford to go in with some guys with upside at running back. He's 25 with little mileage and has been very productive when he's been on the field. To me, he's a perfect complement to Goodson, and Powell would still be around in case Goodson and/or Ivory didn't work out.
I disagree because Ivory and Goodson have different games. We've seen many times in this league, running backs who were in a crowded backfield make a name for themselves on another team. Both Ivory and Goodson were successful in limited opportunities but were also playing behind 1st round picks and guys who signed contracts for a large amount of money. Considering those backs they played behind are good to begin with, their chances at making a name for themselves on those teams was pretty minimal.
Im glad you brought that point up about Arian Foster.... Id give a 2nd round pick for him. Both guys UDFA's Chris Ivory 1300 yards in 3 years with 8 TD's . Arian Foster with 4500 rushing yards and 1500 Receiving Yards with 50 TD's in 4 years. They both have the same build as running backs. Ive watch Chris Ivory on film and I like his running style he runs hard but I wouldnt give them a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th. His body of work isnt that strong to grant that. 6th or 7th tops and I would rather us find a RB in the draft if their not budging off of that pick. We should say see you later in a draft stocked with RB's throughout. As far as Howard it was a reach on the Jets part and thats why he is still on the Jets or a different thought pattern is they set it high so nobody wants him and we keep him.
Ivory/Goodson/Powell/McKnight would be an awesome matchup, and as far as quality and opportunity it'd be exactly what Idzik described as full on competition at the position. Edit: I'm still almost in tears of joy, not having to mention Greene's name. I still have NO idea wtf Titans are thinking...
So if you like a running back in the 4th round is trading a 5th round pick for Ivory and creating an even bigger competition a bad thing?
I wouldn't go that far.. Ivory is better than a running back that we'd find in the 5+ round unless its one of those guys who was extremely underrated of course. I'd give a 4th for Ivory. But if I was to give the 4th it would be in on draft day while we're on the clock with the pick. If there's no one that's worth taking, take the trade.
I do like Idzik's approach yet McKnight won't be in the discussion. He's our ST ace and a good one. However he is not a RB at this level and has shown that. Ivory/Goodson/Powell sounds good. Add Tavon Austin to the mix if we end up getting him and then this backfield/WR corps becomes explosive (Austin counts as both a WR and RB).
Haha me neither, but I'm happy Greene got paid... he had an awesome story and as a RB this was his last chance to bring some good money home.
I think McKnight can be our Dexter McCluster... WR/pass catching RB/ST ace... and honestly considering we're we drafted him that's fine.
The problem I have with Ivory is pretty simple: he's very injury prone. Not a little injury prone, not slightly injury prone, VERY injury prone. In 3 years at Washington State he had 91 carries and was injured at least 3 separate times over that span, playing in 22 games. Then he got kicked off the team for rules violations and went to Tiffin. At Tiffin he had 39 carries in 5 games before a season-ending knee injury. The Saints signed him as a UDFA and he was 3rd-string until injuries to the people in front of him got him a shot. He had a bunch of minor injuries while playing that he played through until a foot injury put him on IR at the end of the year. In 2011 he was PUP until game 7 and then finished the season without an injury. In 2012 he played in 6 games and had a hamstring injury that kept recurring from mid-season onwards. The guy is like an egg back there. And he's a running back. Mike Goodson goes down after a hard hit this year at some point and Ivory comes in to replace him. Within a couple of games Ivory has sprained his ankle (the only part of his legs that hasn't caused him to miss games yet) and we're down to Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight again in the backfield. That's why I don't want Chris Ivory. He's a Fantasy Island pickup with the Jets somehow thinking that they have the magic balm that will keep him healthy that Washington State, Tiffin and the Saints could not find before them. Is there a small chance that he avoids injuries and becomes a very good back? Sure, but why does a rebuilding team go looking for small chances like that with precious draft picks? Everybody says Ivory has been great in limited carries. Well, he's also been repeatedly injured in limited carries.
Okay, so who would be a better 4th or 5th round pick? Because we havent had much success, if at all, lately in drafting there especially at the RB position. Ive studied this draft up and down for the last 8 months and I can confidently tell you that he would be the best 4th round pick we could ever spend in this draft. Unless someone drops EXTREMELY far, he has very good value in the 4th. He may even be had for a 5th, which would be an absolute steal. The best RB that I expect to be available in the 4th is Andre Ellington or Mike Gillislee. Me? Id much rather Ivroy, especially if we plan on developing a young QB in the immediate future.
Those are good names you came up with that can be a good option at 4th or 5th... I could probably take a wild stab in the dark at who would be a worthy pick but Id probably be wrong. Like I said I do like Ivory's running style I just dont want to waste a pick because we dont have to necessarily get a RB this draft. The RB position is not a make ot break spot for us.
