The Jets paid a premium for Shonn Greene. That's the point. They gave up 2 extra picks to take him. Having Shonn Greene wasn't a bad idea, it was what the Jets gave up to get him that made it a bad idea in the end. Mike Shanahan has made a bunch of late round and UDFA type guys 1,000 yard rushers and better. As an example, Terrell Davis was a 5th round pick that Shanahan took to be a gunner on special teams. When he looked good in camp a star was born. Whatever the reason he pulls a great runner out of thin air about every third season or so. Who was the big surprise last year? Alfred Morris, 5'9" 218 lbs and now the Redskins single season rushing leader after being picked in the 6th round last year.
I wouldnt give up more then a fifth rounder for him. This years rb class is so deep we could draft a rb in rounds 2-5
Figure you could get 6 very good years out of Ivory as long as he keeps himself in top shape and continues his early career success. That's a very good ROI as long as the Jets draft pick isn't higher than a 4th. Trade is obviously best option.
Totally agree. It is clear what Idzik thinks of many of Tannebaum's overpaid draftees/signees (Sanchez, Greene, Keller, Pace, Scott,)--overvalued and replacable. The interest in Ivory and the Goodson signing tells you Idzik's opinion of McKnight and Powell as well.

I'm trying to say that being a good running back in the NFL is obviously not about being a highly promoted star in most cases. There are a lot more things than that which go into the equation. The fact that the Jets are considering picking up a UDFA with one of their draft picks despite his injury history tells you that it's not hard to find a decent back even after the draft is over. The Jets would be better off finding a good back late in the draft or even as a UDFA than paying a good draft pick for a guy who has trouble getting on and staying on the field. That the Jets scouting department has been unable to find a decent back late says more about the Jets scouting department than about the availability of decent backs in the late rounds.

Yes, Terry Bradway is still the head of scouting, which is fucked. He's survived a demotion and two coaching changes.
You're right about the scouting department being intact for now. Considering when Idzik was hired, it just wouldn't make sense for the Jets to make big shakeups before this upcoming draft. If there's any major restructuring/changes Idzik wants to implement in terms of scouting, he'll likely wait till this draft completes. This upcoming draft, it's going to be the old regime's scouting reports & infrastructure but Idzik making the final call on picks. Also, Idzik philosophy will hopefully be different than the constant tradeups.
Yes even if the scouting department tells you to take Aaron Rodgers and as GM you decide to take Alex Smith it will make the scouting department look foolish.
Why would we and how could they want a 2nd rounder when Chris Ivory was a UDFA.... They need to take a 6 or 7th at best more like a 7th and be happy.
For all we know this could be a back-up scenario should the RB's the Jets like not make it to their picks. It's also time we realize that it's likely unrealistic to think the Jets are gonna fill EVERY one of their needs in the draft.Frankly, that's not a good way to build your roster. Above all else the Jets need difference makers & should draft accordingly. That said..if the Jets decide to execute this type of deal it means they like different players at other positions come draft day. Filling a need for competition with a young player w/ some NFL experience already underneath him is FAR from a bad thing. This allows the Jets to focus on other positions that perhaps they view as stronger talent pools come draft day.
Well I think that bolded part says it all. The Jets have not been able to find that late round RB that everyone claims are so abundant. Either we arent very lucky, or our RB scouts are shit. Either way, I dont really trust our scouting department. We have spent 2 fourth round picks on RBs in the last 3 years. What have they turned out to? Absolutely nothing. If I know that I am getting a day one starter that has potential to lead the AFC in rushing, Im doing it for a fourth rounder. And just because Ivory was an UDFA, doesnt mean he's not very talented. He is actually one of the more talented runners in the league, but is underutilized and has Drew Brees at QB who throws the ball 40 times a game.
