This draft addresses a lot of needs and takes a lot of players mentioned on this forum. I understand the appeal of Star but I would be depressed if we took a DL with our first pick for the 3rd straight year. In this mock Dee Milliner is also available at our pick. Between he and Star I'm pretty confident that Idzik could find a willing trade partner. I know nothing of John Simon, DE/OLB from Ohio St. Any insight? ROUND 1: New York Jets: Star Lotulelei, NT, Utah Star Lotulelei's heart currently checks out, so I feel comfortable putting him in the top 10 again. It's great news for Lotulelei, who was probably suffering from some fluke virus when he was tested. The Jets could covet the Utah interior lineman. They lost Sione Pouha this offseason and replaced him with a 33-year-old Antonio Garay, who signed a contract for just one season. Garay is owed just $840,000 this year, so he in no way is going to prevent New York from drafting Lotulelei, who is arguably the top prospect on the board. ROUND 2: New York Jets: Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford The Jets need a replacement at tight end after losing Dustin Keller to the Dolphins. They reportedly love Zach Ertz, so they'll take him if he's available at this juncture. ROUND 3: New York Jets: Christine Michael, RB, Texas A&M The Jets need to give their next quarterback some weapons to work with. Both the receiver and tight end positions need to be upgraded. Running back must be addressed as well. Shonn Greene signed with the Titans, but he wasn't very good anyway. ROUND 4: New York Jets: Zac Dysert, QB, Miami of Ohio The Jets have to draft a quarterback at some point, and it looks like it's going to be Zac Dysert. New York has shown a ridiculous amount of interest in him. ROUND 5: New York Jets: John Simon, DE/OLB, Ohio State The Jets are going to have to find an edge rusher at some point in this draft. They have to put more pressure on the quarterback.
Yeah I don't like the Star pick much eather. I understand that he's a really good player but if Milliner is still up we could definitely find a trade partner. The Buccs if they don't get Revis?
I would love this. Assuming Simon pans out decently, it addressed virtually every one of our current holes (aside from Qb). Also, despite being DL again, Star would be, by far, the BPA at the pick.
That would be a great first 5 picks for the Jets. Star on the 9 is excellent value and everybody else looks good for the slot they're picked in. I'd maybe rather go RB on the 2nd with Lacy or Bernard and TE on the 3rd with Kelce but getting Ertz and Michael would be good also. Simon is a pipedream in the 5th round though. Somebody will probably take him late 3rd. He's one of those players who never gives up on a play and that kind of tenacity is going to get him taken by a playoff team.
Zac Dysert!! I would love this draft, although I would take a pass rusher in the first. Dion Jordan or Jarvis Jones
WF, doesn't really change much. Star Lotulelei has been the pick for about a month now. I'd be fine with Ertz in the second though.
I read somewhere yesterday, that Idzik is very high on Ertz. Can't find the link, but it was credible source, not a messagboard draft fan or twitter.
Tony Pauline wrote that Ertz (and North Carolina's DT Sylvester Williams) are "evidently favorites" of Idzik: (*Because I'm not able to post links, I've sent you, WW85, the link as PM*). I like WF's mock for the Jets, because he picked a lot of players, who are rumoured favorites of our (new) FO (Z. Ertz (see above), C. Michael (meetings (!) at East-West Shrine and a private workout) and Zac Dysert (also a privat workout and at least one meeting at the Senior Bowl). So his rounds 2-4 seem pretty realistic - at least for us...
I think this is a solid draft also. Especially if we sign Pace. On walterfootball's mock from March 20th, he had us taking Austin. It's been Star since. (3 mocks) Also, walterfootball has a Draft Rumor page that is kept updated: From http://www.draftinsider.net/blog/?p=6884 Tony Pauline, I don't know him.
If Starr heart problems are generally accepted as false alarm, I don't think he can make it to pick #9. Adding a stud like him to the DL makes it alright to wait until round 5 for OLB. As for Christine Michael, I like the game film but worry about the potential attitude problems other articles bring up. Little uncomfortable without a safety but overall it's a really good draft for Jets.
FWIW, below are the projected draft rounds for these picks as determined by nfldraftscout.com. Star: 1 (#2 of 177 DTs) Ertz: 2 (#2 of 100 TEs) Michael: 4 (#9 of 176 RBs) Dysert: 4-5 (#10 of 118 QBs) Simon: 3-4 (#10 of 154 DEs)
He used to give us Barkley in the second round which I did not appreciate. Only thing I noticed was neither Lotulelei nor Jones are attending the draft. Not really an issue or anything, just something I noticed. http ://www .nfl. com /news/story/0ap1000000158953/article/geno-smith-ej-manuel-among-2013-nfl-draft-attendees (sorry had to break up the link can't post URLs yet)
That's the two most prominent medical cases likely to go in the 1st round. I guess the NFL thinks their projected pick range is too big to invite them to sit in the green room. The NFL invites a few guys each year projected as 2nd and 3rd round picks to avoid having the room come down to just one guy falling like Brady Quinn did. The guys know they are not going early and the NFL knows they are solid picks by the 3rd round so they won't wind up disappointed with a drama going on. Can't do this with Star and Jones though. If they fall out of the 1st they'll still be sitting there but they'll be having issues.
NFL.com has Star listed as a DE in a 3-4, not a NT. I believe he's 320 lbs. I know we were spoiled with 350-360 lb. Kris Jenkins, but would Star be a good NT (assuming he bulks up a little).
Star would probably move around all over the front with the Jets. Put him inside on early downs and outside on passing downs and you create mismatch problems for the blocking schemes. Coples gets to slide inside over a guard. Mo Wilk is over the strong side guard. Star is sitting over the RT. The ROLB is lined up wide outside the LT. That's a lot of pressure coming across the front and it forces the offense into max protect given Rex's propensity to blitz with the nickel back or a safety.
I'd do back flips if Jets pick Star. I know from games I've witnessed last year, Jets were really missing Jenkins. Sure, you can give Pouha/Devitto some credit for holding the fort for a bit, but when it came to needing that big 3rd and short play, they just couldn't hold it down.
I'd love this draft, even if it doesn't address Oline. I know Star would represent 3 interior Dlineman in 3 straight years. But he would be tremendous value, and could play every down. The Coples pick was a curious one for me, as i see his best role being similar to Justin Tuck along 4-3 fronts. He is really a situational guy, as he doesn't match our base D front. We also lost Pouha and Devito, so Star's versatility could definitely help fill voids. Ertz in the 2nd would be tremendous value at a position of huge need. I really hope he falls. I like the idea of taking a chance on Dysert in the 4th too. Might prefer a OG or S in round 3 than Michael would be my only criticism.
just cause you guys were talking about star and attending the draft, i think he was offered a green room appearance, but wanted to stay home. its not super uncommon, luke keuchly did it last year. adding star would be great though. our defense was talented, but it never really came up with game changing plays. with star, i feel like we will be able to apply pressure when needed and actually get that sack when we need it
Every year we hear that improving the D-Line will make our OLBs better. Our D-Line is now damn good and we haven't gotten the pressure we need. Time to address the problem directly. Plus we have a major lack of playmaking ability on O. In short, I do not want Star. If by some crazy chance of luck we get an extra pick somewhere and he's available, then maybe I'd reconsider.
