This is an important point. IMO the 2013 NY Jets are a shit place to develop if you're a QB. No reliable WRs, no TE, no RBs, coach on the hot seat. I'd rather we focus on making the team better overall this year and bring in a project signal caller the next. Who knows, with a proper vet QB in Garrard and an actual decent OC in Mornhinweg Sanchez might actually re-learn how to play football.
Without context this makes you sound like a desperate high school girl. I'm really curious to see how Idzik is going to handle the draft. So far I've been pretty impressed with how he has handled the roster and free agency. If he can carry that over to the draft I feel like the Jets will get several quality starters. I can't wait to see who those starters turn out to be. As for QBs, I think at this stage of the NY Jets development they need to look for the diamond in the rough. Someone who has the tools but didn't have the greatest cast of players around him to produce crazy #'s in college. Maybe that is Dysert, maybe its Renfree, or maybe its some other small school or D3 QB.
He definitely needs to add some bulk which he will do naturally with time in an NFL weight room. He is certainly big enough and imo one of the more intriguing players in the draft.
I think if we get the Bucs #13 we go after EJ Manuel. The more I watch on this guy, the more I am impressed. His release is the quickest of this draft class, does not throw interceptions, has great pocket presence and can elude pass rushers to extend a play. Mark my words and I'll eat crow if it does not happen, EJ Manuel will be a star in the NFL. If the Jets were smart they would get him at #13 or with the 39th pick.
I like EJ a lot, too, and I think the Jets are right for doing their diligence and bringing in him. Someone is definitely going to take him in the second or late first and, if they're in a position to groom him, EJ certainly could be a stud. This is a bit OT, but I can't help but compare this crop to next year's. Is EJ really better than Logan Thomas? Is Matt Scott really better than Murray? Are any of their girlfriends hotter than McCarron's? All this QB talent, just waiting a year away, and this year's depth at other positions makes me think that the Jets will pass on picking a "franchise" QB year.
If he last that long. Would love him in the 3rd. I would say Dysert, but the fact that he runs out of the pocket when there's no pressure scares me. Wilson is tough as nails, and will take a hit. His numbers are actually better against the blitz.
I hear you, however look at our depth chart. Even if Garrard wins the job, is he healthy to last all season, putting in the small minded Sanchez to manage games? Do you trust a full or half season to McElroy? Tebow? (if he's even in green and white). A guy like EJ Manuel gives you the ability to have some more depth for the future because chances are unless Garrard wins the job and lights it up he will not be back next year. You draft a QB this year for low risk, high reward..... However from watching FSU games and other tapes on EJ Manuel makes me want to reach for the guy if we have two first round picks. I know I contradicted myself, however he is the only guy I would draft this high because of his upside.
I don't think Manuel is getting to 39. I think he's going to the Jaguars, 49ers or Eagles at the top of the 2nd round at the latest. I think he could easily go to the Patriots on the 29 or the 49ers on the 31.
There is a good article on NFL.com about whether or not Idzik will wait until next year to draft a QB for the team, possibly with a new coach. Says what I've been thinking for awhile: Give Ryan and Sanchez one last chance to prove themselves and if they fail they are both gone (fail being anything shy of a playoff spot). Odds are they are going to fail and you go from there.
There's actually another QB that I have heard the Jets may take a chance on in the later rounds. Sounds really intriguing from what articles have been written about him. He reminds of that QB in NE, lol.... http://www.thepostgame.com/features...uilt-former-prep-stars-uncommon-road-cusp-nfl
Here's the problem with the idea: you have an asset linked to a liability in that scenario. I don't think the Jets are going to let Rex and Sanchez be linked that way moving forward. The evidence is too strong at this point that Sanchez will drag Rex down if they are linked. I'm guessing, and it's just a guess, that Sanchez doesn't make it out of training camp this year as a member of the Jets. If he does make it out of training camp I agree that the odds favor both him and Rex being gone at the end of the year. Realistically the Jets should cut Sanchez as soon as they have enough bodies at QB to make for a real competition in camp without him. Even if there is an agenda to move Rex out also the Jets need to avoid angering the fan base next season. Moving Rex out because he and Sanchez failed again would be about the most destabilizing thing the Jets could do next season at the start of their rebuilding effort.
The guy in New England was recruited to one of the most prestigious programs in the country, bided his time and was rewarded with a two year stint as their QB. He was a good citizen by all accounts and left in good standing, if not seen as one of the better QB's in recent years at the program. I look at Lalich and I see Ryan Leaf not Tom Brady.
This comparison was not intended to be about backgrounds and personality checks. It's all bout X's and O's and physical ability. They both are tall with similar builds and they both have very keen awareness of X's and O's on the field. If you read the article, that's what it's all about. Lalich is in no way a Ryan Leaf. Leaf was a selfish egotist.
That's my guess also. But I disagree with you abut the odds being better that they fail. I think Rex wants to do all he can to get his QB back on the straight and narrow. Hiring Marty, to me, that tells us that if Marty took on the position, he had to have been comfortable with working with Mark. There really is no other QB at the moment for Marty, is there? Garrard is just there as a safety valve if Mark fails.
I don't specifically disagree with anything you said but would provide the counter-point that cutting Sanchez is more about his contract then him personally. I don't know the details of his contract, I haven't read it, but from what I've heard in the media it's a lot better cap wise for them to cut him next year as opposed to this year. Does that mean that will trump all the other reasons to cut him? Not necessarily, no, but it will be a factor.
