I've been wondering a lot about a Panthers trade up for the 9. I think they could do that also for Sheldon Richardson if both Floyd and Lotulelei are gone.
Typically I'm a big believer in just picking where you are, not trading around unless there is a very specific player you want, although even that can cause problems (see: Sanchez, Mark). However, this year because we have so many needs it wouldn't be a bad idea at all to trade back and get a few extra picks for depth. That also doesn't factor in the potential Revis deal for at least one Buc's pick in this draft. Personally I'd prefer we get some picks in the 2014 draft for him anyway. Say the Buc's 1st and 3rd/4th in 2014 and 2nd in 2013 if we can get that much. Three picks in the second round of this draft would be very helpful in adding depth. Then next year we'd still have a few extra picks which will either be helpful for adding depth or if we want to use some of the extra picks to trade up to target a specific player (i.e. a QB) then we can do that.
instead of making a new topic I figured I would make some edits to this draft. the trade with the Panthers stands, we gain an additional 2 & 4. 1. Chance Warmack {#14 Overall} (OG, Alabama) the guard position is a huge need for us right now. Willie Colon is a good signing but he could be an injury risk. Warmack is a huge upgrade over anyone we currently have at the position. he manhandled defenses all season. 2. Matt Elam {#39 Overall} (S, Florida) we lost Bell and Landry and currently have a bunch of rookies who haven't had much playing time. we need a safety like Elam. a big physical guy who can create turnovers. 2. Robert Woods {#44 Overall} (WR, USC) Woods is one of my favorite receivers in the class, his route running is second to none. would be a great weapon for our WCO. 3. Travis Frederick {#72 Overall} (OG/C, Wisconsin) I know what your thinking, another guard? Yes. Frederick moved to center in 2012 for whatever reason after a shutdown season at guard in 2011. we need guards. Colon is a good depth move for us that's it. Frederick and Warmack would both solidify our OLine as the crème de la crème. 4. Ryan Swope {#106 Overall} (WR, Texas A&M) I like Swope's game. we add another receiver because you can never have enough. Swope adds to Woods, Hill, Holmes and Kerley. I don't expect Tone to be around after this season so we'll need the help. the more weapons in a WCO, the better.
4. Cornelius Washington {#108 Overall} (OLB, Georgia) I passed on Jarvis Jones specifically because we should be drafting offense in the first, it's clearly our weak point. OLB is also a weak point but adding Barnes was a solid move. Washington is a freak athlete, wowed scouts at the combine and didn't garner as much attention because of playing in Jones shadow. 5. Zac Dysert {#141 Overall} (QB, Miami of Ohio) we need to draft a QB int0 his draft to compete with Sanchez, even if it's only temporary. that's why I have no quarry using a later round pick on Dysert. from the tape I seen of him he's very polished. Dysert is a guy I see taking over this offense if Sanchez' habits continue. 6. Stefphon Jefferson {#178 Overall} (RB, Nevada) we shouldn't use a high pick on a RB, we have bigger needs and our offense will be focused on passing more. Jefferson is a sleeper pick. would compete for the starting job with Goodson and Powell. 7. Levine Toilolo {#215 Overall} (TE, Stanford) we lost Keller and Cumberland proved to be a good replacement. Toilolo and Cumberland make for a solid duo of TE's. maybe we'll even see some Hayden Smith.
I think Dysert is off the board in the 4th round. I might be wrong on that but I kind of see it breaking down like this: 1st - Smith, Barkley 2nd - Manuel, Nassib 3rd - Jones, Wilson 4th - Glennon, Dysert 5th - Scott 6th - Bray, Klein (not necessarily as QB) 7th - Renfree, Sorenson
2 guards in first 3 picks? That's overkill. Also Goodson has been a career backup with documented fumbling and injury concerns so I'm not sold on him yet. A starting backfield rotation of Goodson and Powell hardly strikes fear into defenders. I do like the Jones, Bernard, Woods and Toilolo picks.
Overall I like the draft but everyday I grow more & more leery of Jones. No one has been able to explain how he fits as a 3 down player in Rex's scheme. Yes he played 34 in college but was rarely asked to cover & was only so-so at setting the edge.Whch means other than pass rush,a large portion of his transition to the Jets scheme is a mystery.Additionally he doesn't have the frame to add the needed weight,he lacks the typical length AND his workouts have suggested he is slow/stiff. This is before we even get INTO the spinal stenosis issue. How do all these concerns get erased? It can't just be sack production alone.
when I see all these guards being mentioned it makes me shake my head even more at the FO not wanting to keep Slauson around for at least another season at less than $1m.
Glennon is an enigma to me. He has the size that you just can't teach, and he has an arm. However, he has poor accuracy, and constantly over throws receivers. I also want someone that can get out of trouble and throw fluidly on the run, Glennon doesn't fit that mold. But, that's just me. Glennon reminds me of Dan McGwire who QB'd for San Diego State in the early 90's. He was 6'8 and had a big arm (albeit he was thicker than Glennon), and he was also inaccurate. Seattle reached on him in round 1 and he flopped in the NFL. For some reason, I see the same happening with Glennon.
Its entirely likely Slauson wasn't going to resign with the Jets no matter the offer due to the rotational shenanigans last year.
I think it's highly unlikely we double dip at G until way later if we get Warmack. A cash strapped team made one of its only moves for a G, you better believe they expect 16 games out of him. Not to say we don't bring in a handful of UDFA Gs or a 6-7th rounder to fill out the depth but we are really hurting at OLB unless you think McIntyre is the answer. Need impact not insurance at this point.
What is the most Qb's drafted in one draft by a single team? Not a bad idea since that spot is where we suck the most.
It's actually not a bad idea at all for a team that has suffered with injuries, aging and skill deficits at QB over the last 13 years. You can make an argument that a team should draft a QB every year until they're sure they have their guy and then again at least every other year after that. The popular notion in the NFL is that when your QB goes down you're just screwed and the year is over. Maybe it's time for the way teams allocate value at QB to change. Maybe teams should always have 3 or 4 guys capable of starting, with a really good QB as the headliner and then a young guy being developed and a seasoned backup who was once a starter behind the main man. That would give the team a readily trade-able asset going into any given year to fill a sudden hole that emerged and then of course taking another young guy to develop after trading the last one. The hangup is cap space of course, but if you have the second guy ready to go then you don't have the pressure to pay the first guy a bajillion dollars unless he's clearly a hall of famer. So starter = $8-10M (extension of first contract at 3 years), #2 starter = $600k-2M (first contract for 2nd/4th rounder), vet backup = $2-3M (Moore/Hasselbeck/Garrard/Carr) for a total QB cap number of $10.6-15M with heavy injury insurance built in.
