http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/21995/kipers-4-0-mock-mingo-is-his-name-o Once again, it's Barkevious Mingo. On Thursday, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper released his mock draft 4.0 and, not surprisingly, he projects the Jets will select the undersized pass rusher from LSU with the ninth overall pick. In the second round, he has Stanford TE Zach Ertz to the Jets at 39 overall. Kiper has been consistent with Mingo-to-the-Jets. You can check out the entire first round, but here are Kiper's top nine: 1. Chiefs -- Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M 2. Jaguars -- Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU 3. Raiders -- Sharriff Floyd, DT, Florida 4. Eagles -- Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia 5. Lions -- Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama 6. Browns -- Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon 7. Cardinals -- Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan 8. Bills -- Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina 9. Jets -- Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU Kiper's take: This is a pick I'm sticking with, because I really like the fit. The Jets need an athletic difference-maker on the edge for Rex Ryan. I've said before the interior of the defensive line should be a strength with Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples, but the Jets need edge speed. Mingo is a freak athlete and could become a star under Ryan's tutelage. No Star in the top 9 Kiper is a Tool.
I just don't get it man. I hope to God this doesn't happen. Jarvis Jones over Mingo any day. We need an OLB. We don't need another DE.
He is an NFL OLB, that's what I'm getting at. He doesn't have the body to be an NFL DE yet, very very Maybin like.
I see what you are saying. I just don't think he is the right pick for us. Yes his first few steps are fast as hell, but he is just too raw. He did not produce much in college and I feel we don't need another "project" player to take in the first round. To me, a guy like Jarvis Jones has all we need. He has produced in college and just seems like a pure pass rusher. I feel Rex could work his magic with Jones and make him something special
I agree with your sentiments, I think Mingo has a ton of "potential" but he needs to add weight and really refine his pass rushing skills. He's certainly not worthy of a top 10 pick. 20-32 seems more appropriate to me.
I know. It's obnoxious. What I don't understand is how they see a guy like Mingo and have us taking him over Jones. Actually, I know why. Because Jones did not impress on his pro day, especially with his 40 yard dash. I have yet to understand why people care about an OLB's 40 yard dash. How often is he going to be sprinting full speed in a straight line 40 yards to get to the QB?
If Jarvis Jones is there when the Jets pick, and they take Mingo, I might put a remote through my tv.
Mingo might be a better NFL player than college player. If he can set the edge, he'd be a fantastic fit in this defense. But that's a big if. I used to be anti-Mingo. But at this point, if we're taking an OLB, Mingo has as much ability as anyone. Worred about his strength, but I won't throw my remote through the wall. Won't be pleased, but I would understand it.
If the first 8 fell as such, I would much prefer we grab Jarvis Jones, Star or Warmack. Mingo looks too Maybin-esque for me, we can't bust this pick!!! Jarvis Jones is a proven pass rusher, he gets to the QB consistently. Star would make our DLine tops in the league and Warmack would solidify this line. All three make a hell of a lot more sense then Mingo, IMO.
Jones and Star both have health red flags I believe - though both have apparently been given the all clear. so long as we don't go for Austin and don't go for a guard I am pretty relaxed about what we do - without a decent QB we aren't doing shit in this league anyway (or rather, we will be doing really shit) so take a good player for 2 - 3 years down the line when we might be competitive and away we go.
We need Chance Warmack because he played well in the closest Conference to NFL style play and was great.
Probably because the Jets have a history of drafting "combine" guys. For the record, we also have a history of drafting busts. I hope we don't draft Mingo, but it's definitely a possibility.
The Jets have established a rep for taking tools guys without a lot of production to go with the tools. Mingo is like the perfect Jet pick if you think the Jets are still fantasizing instead of drafting great players.
Do you realize that Jarvis Jones played in the same conference and actually stood out head and shoulders above his peers? The only defensive player that could be compared to him for taking over a game this past season was Clowney. When the season ended most mocks had Jones going one to three. It wasn't until the combines and his Pro Day that Jones began to slide. If Jones is still on the board, which I doubt, I will be furious if we don't select him. He's also a pretty bright kid, unlike Jordan (my second favorite player in the draft) who is as stupid as they come.
I thought I read the Jets hired a new GM with his own values to make the choices. I also heard he came from a different program. Bah to these rumors of a different direction.
