What I don't get is - why Jets FAN would be in support of this trade, taken at face value. A lot of numbers are getting thrown around- "Revis wants this, yada" but he's not making that now - and he's not holding out right now.. It's all just all relative to what you want to believe. Why not deal with that if/when it happens? The worst case scenario is he IS asking for some astronomical number and you can't get a deal worked out - you lose him, get a compensatory pick and move on.. But you still have the best corner and possibly the best defensive player in the game in the mean time... with all early negotiation rights. (everything leaning in your favor) Best case scenario, he could be had for a reasonable figure and you sign him up. Either way as a fan - I'll take either scenario over supporting a move that is giving him up for less than he's worth. I'll support a team that tries above all. Look at this roster right now and the highest paid players: 1. Ferguson (8 years/73M - 34M guaranteed) 2. Sanchez (5 Years/ 58M - 20M guaranteed) 3. Mangold (7 years/50M - 25M guaranteed) 4. Revis (4 years/46M - 27.5M guaranteed) 5. Harris (4 years/36M -29.5M guaranteed) That's just the top 5 it gets uglier the more you go down. (a punt protector at 7) Anyway, out of that list only 1 of those players is actually worth their contract... Revis. Yet there are Jets fans that want to trade HIM? Let's go down the list: -Revis is a top 5 player in this league- Ferguson isn't even a top 5 player AT HIS POSITION... IN THIS CONFERENCE. -Sanchez is the worst starter in the whole league at his position -Mangold is a fine player, but the knock on Revis is his position - is center more important than CB? I don't think so. Mangold makes it more important, because he's a good leader.. but most organizations just throw in guys off the street at that position and do just fine... -Harris is the same as Ferguson. Way overpaid. He's not even a top 5 LB in his conference, yet his contract is uglier than DRs.. I think what we have here is a case of fans wanting change and wanting to be positive. Since the dumbass in the owners box wants to make that change with Revis, people are attaching themselves to it. But in reality, out of that group above, does it really make sense to take it as it is and decide to trade Revis? Not really, it makes no sense at all.
If you think a CB is worth that much then why isn't the whole league knocking down the Jets door trying to get him? Obvious those other 30 teams (maybe not TB) do not think he is worth it.
If his contract value was the only issue, you might have a case. But you seem to have forgotten the Jets will want compensation, and significant compensation at that, for another team to get a shot at negotiating a contract with Revis. Add in his injury comeback, and... Why do I have to even remind you of these factors??? The Jets don't have to pay compensation to negotiate with Revis, and have a below market year remaining on his contract as leverage. They are in a better position than any other team to come to a deal with Revis, but they have an owner who knows less about football than many posters on this board calling hte shots, saying for emotional reasons he does not want to deal with Revis. What a shit sandwich.
I can't blame Revis for wanting for $16M+ a year. I can't blame Idzik for telling him to fuck off. Decisions...Decisions.
The below market year is no leverage at all. Revis has all the leverage, he can walk after 2013, leave the Jets hanging with a 9 million dollar cap hit in 2014 AND get at best a 3 round comp pick for him. Secondly, there is no compensation that has to be paid just to negotiate with Revis, there just has to be an agreement as to what the Jets will receive if the other team comes to an agreement with Revis and agrees to the trade. If the other team can't come to terms with Revis they walk away with no cost. as far as a contract goes Revis has all the leverage, the Jets have none.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter One-year deal between 49ers and CB Nnamdi Asomugha is worth up to $3 million. WOW what a fall from grace! This is not what Revis (his agents) wanted to see. Corner market takes a pounding!!!
You missed one important fact. Hed have to play out the season, and risk another injury. Figure, he'd be playing for 6 million against a possible 50 million dollar contract. Plus hes 28. If he gets another i jury, and god forbid tje same knee hed be a 30 year old cornerback coming of two knee injuries. Whats the foing rate on that? Take a man with an awfully big set of balls to make that kind of wager.
The Nnamdi deal is bad for the Jets. They just lost one of their only trade partners, and now the Bucs have them by the balls.
No. The only loser here..is Revis. The Jets dont have to trade him...as I just said he Can play out the season for 6 mil...and risk losing his future to another injury. Or he can sign a reasonable deal in the face of the fact that no one wanted him. The Jets should approach him and offer to make him the highest paid corner under the new CBA, or let him go FA. Not like the market is going to get better next year. It going to take a couple years for teams to cut older overpriced players, because they werent all up for FA or cuttable this year.
Because who out of that list can get back value like potential multiple 1sts? Who in that list is known for holding out for top dollar and not completing their contract? Yeah let's trade players for 6th round picks just because they have a higher salary than Revis? That's silly. Revis is being discussed because there is interest and we can return on him. It isn't about just money why Revis is being shopped. It's money, potential, skill, and his past holdouts. If we were just trading players with lots of money, you make sense. But we aren't, we are looking to get some value back, hence Revis. Revis also plays at a position where we have money heavily invested and a top 10 backup. Can you say that for any position listed above? It's silly to think of this of a black and white issue. Much more goes into it
not so sure. takes an alternative cb off the market and likely sets the price range lower for revis, maybe raising a team's hopes that they can trade for him and sign him for more reasonable dollars.. or that the jets themselves can just wait things out and sign him too.
Actually, with Hall and Aso leaving the market I think the Jets position got better. The number of acceptable CB's is dwindling at this point and the star power out there is non-existent. I think TB already has a predilection for a Revis deal and every CB that leaves the market makes them more likely to follow through instead of less likely. SF was never going to trade for Revis. Now TB can't sign Aso as the consolation prize if they can't make the deal of their choice.
I wouldn't discount Atlanta coming in as a competitor. They are a win-now team and Revis can significantly help that team. They aren't going to get anyone nearly as good at their current trade position at #30 and that beats a 2nd round pick from TB in 2013. They have made big draft day decisions in the past (Julio Jones) and their owner is willing to spend the money. On the flip side, Revis can't afford to not have a contract extension going into the 2013 season. Unlike other positions, ACL injuries impact CB play the most given the reactive nature of the position and lateral movement. If I was the Jets, I would seriously consider talking a contract negotiation with him now and ask if he would consider moving to free safety where lateral speed is not as important. They would need to work on the salary but with CB market continuing to bottom and the focus on middle may not be a bad place to be. That would allow the Jets to have their 3 best guys in the backfield at the sametime, eliminates a critical draft-day need, and gives Revis some longevity in a position transfer that is perfect for his skillset. Of course this all depends upon whether he wants to stay a NYJ and if the relationship with the agents is repaired. That being said, with Tannenbaum gone, Rex muzzled, Woody pissed, and the CB market crash all point to a deal getting done now.
how the hell is this bad for the Jets or the Bucs have them by the balls? the most repeated argument for the Jets not being able to get trade value for Revis, and why they should keep him, has been that no team is going to give up a great pick if they also have to pay Revis a ton of money. now the market is showing that the Bucs will not have to pay a ton to keep him, so they would are getting value for Revis even if they give up the high draft pick. That is the opposite of the Bucs having them by the balls. that is the Jets having the leverage because the Bucs can now work out a very favorable financial deal for him. the Jets don't need multiple trade partners to get a good deal, they only need one that really wants him. secondly, this is good for the Jets if they want to keep him. now they can offer him a very fair multi-season deal that may be well below what he had expected but more than he would get elsewhere, before he even steps on the field. at this point it is in Revis' best interest to get as much money as he can, considering the market is down, rather than risking a decline in play or another injury, and further damaging what his contract may be. the only downside the Aso signing has for the Jets is if they resign him and he doesn't return to form. but from a trade or a contract negotiating standpoint, nothing could be better for the Jets than Aso signing such a small deal.
No it's not.... at all. Aso set the bar previously. He was cut after falling way the fuck off seemingly out of nowhere. GMs will use this as leverage: the drop off at CB can be swift. The bar has plummeted at CB. We can probably get him at $12m/per, but we'll see how he plays in 2013 first.
