This just made me really excited about the prospect of getting Geno. It seems like the Jets have a pretty good shot at getting him at 9, though whether we should or not is definitely up for debate. I think I would grab him at the 9, though. If he busts, it's a huge loss and will lengthen our rebuilding process by a few more years. However, because we are rebuilding and will (most likely) not be competing for a playoff spot next year, this is the best time to take a shot on a Qb. If he manages to become serviceable/becomes our franchise qb, the Jets will be contenders sooner than most fans think. That potential is what excites me.
Laxin sees everything I do it his improvements and Geno will likely need to either sit til the bye week OR have a huge head start prior to camp if he's going to start from day 1 but he's going to be special. I see so much Aaron Rodgers in his game its unreal from a potential standpoint and if Idzik, Rex and MM can give him what he needs I think we found our answer I remember hearing on the radio that Andrew Luck would come to WVU in the off-season to spend time with his dad and Geno worked out with him some. Oliver Luck actually helped Geno improve his understanding of reading different schemes the problem was Geno literally always had 1-2 seconds in the pocket before getting flushed out and having to improvise Give this kid a good clean pocket and guys who can get open and watch him light it up, I understand most scouts saying the situation is huge with drafting Geno while Luck would fit anywhere Geno needs to be groomed to reach his potential which is why I see teams going elsewhere since they likely dont feel right now is the time for a QB(OAK, AZ and JAX for example)
Nobody is gonna trade away from Geno Smith because they don't want to groom a QB. It's because they think the QB available isn't worth grooming.
All I can say is I disagree and think it would be a mistake to pick him over some other potential impact players. Unfortunately I think we are going to end up with him so I just hope the few people here that see franchise potential in him a are right.
I'm building the same mindset myself. Guess it all comes down to interpretation. Watched the Geno Smith games for 2012 and feel let down. I'll watch the 2011 games later tonight. I agree Geno is the best QB prospect in this class but disagree that he's the best use of pick#9. Don't think the gap between him & everyone else is so big that Jets can't wait till 2nd or 3rd round to grab a decent QB prospect. If the Jets pick him, I'll think positive and go into homer mode. Hoping he becomes a franchise QB.
The other thing is that they may get an offer for the 9 that makes them trade down. There are a lot of positive scenarios for the Jets at this point and drafting a potential franchise QB in Smith is one of them.
Everyone here wants an answer at QB but no one wants to take a chance on one. I understand that some believe he may not be the answer, but the possibility that he may be still exists. How are we supposed to ever get an answer if we never take a chance on one. Get one in the 2014 draft you say, but what makes you think those guys are going to be productive. Let me guess, you're going off their gameplay. Well, Geno had one hell of a career in college as well. We would need to fall within the top 3 picks in 2014 to get an instant starter and I just don't see that happening. You can't pass up an opportunity like this. You just can't
I'm in the wait until next year camp but if they feel the need to absolutely pick up a QB why not use our second or third rounder? Like you said, he might be the best but it doesn't seem like the gap is so massive that you can't find a comparable talent later on freeing up your high pick to do a lot of things: improve pass rush, offensive line or pick an impact receiver or you can even try to trade down and go for some really good depth instead. But, yeah, if the Jets pick him I guess I'll just have to get used to it and hope for the best.
Sorry, I was on my tablet and the link didn't work. I did watch the pro day footage and, admittedly, it looked a lot better. Spiral was good, sideline passes were decent and had a few nice over the shoulder throws. That being said lots of QBs could do well against no defense but I don't feel as hopeless. Still hoping he gets picked ahead of us or we go elsewhere.
For those that can see the link, I recommend taking a look. Does he have the intangibles to succeed at the next level? I want a franchise QB as much as the next Jet fan, but to me I just see him as overrated. I think he does some good things on the football field, and he's got the size you want in a QB. It's the mental things I have an issue with. http://blogs.thescore.com/nfl/2013/03/08/the-tape-never-lies-geno-smith-lacks-awareness-and-instincts/ I still have an issue with him reading defenses, the basics of being a QB.
When he is getting hit on every play in less than 2 seconds, of course he panics and makes dumb mistakes. Watch his highlight reel from 2012 and watch how many times the kid gets hit. I mean come on.
I don't know enough about the kid to say if we should draft him or not. But if he falls to #9, do you really think they would pass on him? I don't.
I don't think the WVU offensive line wasn't that bad. He doesn't make quick decisions with the football http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/375391-geno-smiths-slow-eyes-spell-trouble-in-nfl If he falls to 9, they should take him - I don't have much confidence in any of the QBs in this draft - if he's a true student of the game, sitting him down for 8 or so games so he can learn how NFL defenses work would be the best thing for him. Who knows, maybe he does become a good QB.
Well now that the Raiders have Flynn and will likely be trading Palmer to the Cards seems all but certain that Smith will be available at the ninth spot, unless someone goes way off the board. Most mock draft I've seen have him going to the Cards or Bills, both of which appear to be going in another direction.
WVU offensive line was one of the worst in college. Look at all of Smith's scouting reports. They do say he does not have that "special" talent scouts look for, but he played behind, and I quote, "a terrible offensive line".
I'll also note that if the Raiders and Bills pass on Geno, that most likely means that he is the next great QB.
This is exactly where i'm at. I'm glad the Jets didn't overpay Kolb (although i was interested in him, but not at that price), or Palmer. They didn't trade away anything valuable to land the relatively unknown Flynn either. Taking a chance on Smith has much more upside than any of those moves. He's a good pocket passer with nice accuracy, and has the athleticism to improvise if a play is not there. Legit first round prospect at the most important position on the field, so i don't mind reaching a few picks there. I like the pass rushers a lot, but none of them are exactly can't miss no brainers. We'll need to take a chance on a QB at some point. I like the value in Smith enough to take it now, if the draft fell that way.
