So if Barkley & Smith was gone, then Jets should draft EJ Manuel or Nassib or Tyler with pick #9 and then build from there?
under this assumption the 2 guys I'm looking for at QB gone so at #9 depending on who's there I might trade back if we can or draft a pass rusher
so it's pass rusher or trade back. Nothing else? If there's no pass rushers, why would other teams trade up with the Jets?
1. KC- Joeckel 2. JAX- Mingo 3. OAK- Floyd 4. PHILLY- Jordan 5. DET- Fisher 6. CLE- Milliner 7. AZ- Johnson 8. BUF- Patterson 9. NYJ- Smith thats how I see the 1st 9 picks playing out at the end of the day
You can't teach a person how to catch. It's a talent not a skill - either you have it or you don't. You take a kid and throw him the ball in 9th grade and if he can't catch then, it doesn't matter how athletically gifted he is, he's never going to be good at catching it. Either you have the hand eye coordination or you don't. That's why drafting a WR because he's really fast and a great blocker is just about the easiest way you can demonstrate to everyone in football that you're a dope as a GM.
the point was GT didn't throw much so the coaching staff never put any emphasis on him becoming an Elite pass catcher(hands wise) and were ok with him catching the ball with his body. That shit flies in college but not in the pros If he went to UGA he would have had to become a better hands catcher to thrive in the SEC and would have subsequently been drafted higher since the time he needed to adapt wouldn't be as long, by year 3 he should fine
My point went right over your head. It doesn't matter what the coaching staff emphasizes - NFL caliber receivers instinctively catch the ball with their hands when they are 14 years old. They don't learn it in college because their coach emphasized it. You can tell in their first week of freshman high school football. You can't learn it. Either you can catch or you can't.
We have no idea where Hill is in his progression. Multiple needs? Other than being a WR, like what? If you mean KR or PR we do still have McKnight, and now Goodson as well. Austin would be a luxury pick, period. Do you guys not remember 2011? Remember how bad our O-line was, well we lost two guys on our line in FA so this must be addressed way before we draft another WR. I think we'll be fine, Holmes, Hill and Kerley can get the job done. Besides if your looking in this direction what we really need is a TE right now. This is asinine, asiten, asieleven, asitwelve...
Hill isn't 1/10th the playmaker that Austin is. Austin is explosive and makes people miss. All we know about Hill based off his 1 year and his college resume is that he has deep ball speed, Period. And we also know that his hands are questionable. You can only base evaluations off of what you've seen a player do. Hill remains to be an unknown and that's it. When it comes to Austin, yes I mean KR and PR as well. Not to mention lining up in the slot and in the backfield. So he does address multiple needs. Austin is not a luxury pick. He's an infusion of playmaking and explosion that this offense severely needs. This is the kind of pick that instantly helps this team. Not some project QB like Geno Smith who we've seen a million times before during the overhype leading up to the draft. You don't just pick any QB. You wait for the right one. Smith is a project.
If we're drafting a WR, it will be to replace Holmes in 2014. This WR class is deep and I'd prefer someone that was a reliable catcher (like DeAndre Hopkins or Stedman Bailey) than an explosive guy like Austin or Cordarelle Patterson. I particularly don't want Patterson. I fear for his ability to gain separation in the NFL.
I don't like the idea of drafting a slot WR with the 9th pick. Those that compare him to Harvin need to realize, Harvin is built like a beast. Austin is 20 pounds smaller.
i agree ... i think hopkins is a great compliment to hill, a great fit in the wco, and better value at 39 (if hes there) than austin at 9 i just really dont want to see austin on the pats
The only ? with Hill is his hands, which may not even be an issue now. Between bad play at QB, a terrible OC and injury we have no clue what this kid is really capable of. He could be the next Calvin Johnson. One thing I do know for sure is numbers don't lie: Austin Height: 5'8" Weight: 174 Arm Length: 30" Hand Size: 9 1/8" 40-yd: 4.34 Vertical: 32" Hill Height: 6'3" Weight: 215 Arm Length: 33 3/8" Hand Size: 9 3/8" 40-yd: 4.36 Vertical: 39 1/2" You can teach a guy technique, you can practice and get better hand skills, what you can't do is learn or teach size. Austin is only slightly faster but is dwarfed in size being 41 lbs lighter (and I'd say Hill is even bigger now), 7" height difference and out jumping him by 7.5". So not only is he a bigger target but can catch a ball 14.5" higher than Austin. Yes last year in pure skill Austin was better, though I wouldn't call him 10x better like you have but in comparison his skills are more refined than Hills was. Even with all this said we still need offensive lineman far more than we need WR's at this point, next in line is TE on that side of the ball. On the other side of the ball we were ranked 25th against the run and haven't had a pass rush since 2006 when we lost John Abraham.
It's funny how you keep pointing to numbers from the underwear Olympics and ignore actual on the field production as if it's meaningless. Austin has been an extremely productive football player. Hill has really good combine numbers that have yet to translate to the field at the college or NFL level. Another thing ... in a wco you want guys who can get yac ... austin is a yac machine.
Tavon Austin is 20 times the player Stephen Hill is, right now. We act like all our offense needs is a QB when we haven't had an explosive player in years. And please stop comparing combine stats. This isn't the National Combine League.
yep austin is something else and for sure a dangerous weapon. teams will view him as a slot/gadget/special teams player i suppose. so how high do u draft this kind of player. note sure if he goes top 10, doubt it but closer to 20 would be OK.
