While Geno Smith may not be a Luck, RG3 type prospect. I do think he has top 10-15 QB potential. I would personally select him at #9 if he fell (would not trade up for him).
There is no if he falls to us!!! Who exactly is going to get him before "us" exactly? Jacksonville? They already have a work in progress QB, and even though I don't like Gabbert his O-line is worse than ours was in 2011. They're getting an O-lineman more than likely, although they need help on both sides of the ball so either way they're getting a lineman on one side or the other. That leaves Oakland. They're working on matt Flynn right now and if they aquire Flynn this conversation is over. If not I'm still not sure they go for Geno with haveing Terrelle Pryor on the roster and actively looking for a Palmer replacement shows me their lack of interest in Geno anyways. So now tell me who is left that will even take Geno in the 1st round, let alone before us?
That's one of the only (if not the only) reasons why I worry about Smith. Jax, Oak, Arizona, and the Bills all need a QB (and KC traded for Alex Smith). If they all pass on him, then that would have to signal a red flag, no?

Not the first time good QB's got passed over by teams that need QB's. If those other teams pass on Geno that's good for us. We draft him, then let Garrard or even McElroy start until Geno is ready to takeover.
He probably would win, but Id rather let him sit for at least half the season. Not only does he have to develop but so does the offense around him.
So basically your argument is: If he is good, someone will pick him before Jets If nobody picked him before Jets, then he is no good. Wouldn't it be easier and more honest to just say: "I don't want Geno Smith"? Or is that that you slightly lack intestinal fortitude and want something or someone else to make a decision for you?
If David Garrard is healthy he's the perfect guy to start the season with as the Jets install the WCO. Then you play it by ear from there. The young guy, whoever it is, should go in at some point unless the Jets are in the thick of the race. Even if the Jets are in it next year if they spend the 9 on a QB they should get him in by mid-season or thereabouts. The Giants put Eli in for Kurt Warner in the middle of a playoff race and promptly lost 6 out of 7 as he blew chunks all over the field. They literally gave away a playoff spot with a good vet on the roster and playing ok. They got two Super Bowl trophies out of the move.
I just watched like half an hour of footage of Smith showing all his throws from a number of games. Not impressive at all. I don't see where these franchise QB comments are coming from. Dude can't even get a decent spiral on a 10 yard pass, let alone a long bomb. Plus he doesn't seem able to throw a sideline pass worth dick. It was supposed to be about Smith but just made Austin look that much better seeing as he would turn a five yard slant pass into a 30 yards after the catch with his elusiveness. Honestly, Sanchez looks better at this point.
ok 1st off for the bolded, NO 2nd yes I was very, very sketchy about his ball during the year. never threw a tight spiral but he cleaned that up a ton during the pre-draft process [YOUTUBE]U3csS2AjZK4[/YOUTUBE] very clean throws and he'll only get better at it from practicing with pro coaches and players I think we're expecting him to come in and be Luck or Griffin but he may need a little extra time but look at Kaepernick and Wilson, who came on late. He's at their levels
I think you can get highlight reel material of anyone but that doesn't make them a consistent threat. Tebow is the perfect example. There are probably hundreds of clips of Tebow on YouTube that make him look like the best to play the game but we all know that is hilariously far from the truth. IMO the footage of all his snaps from a few full games is infinitely more valuable than a few minute clips taken from the course of an entire season.

I watched 10 games of his today... Some from 2011, but most from 2012. I did not get that vibe at all. What I saw was a guy who can make every throw. He does not have elite arm strength, but he can step into a throw and spin it when he needs to. He has come a long way from 2011-2012, both physically and mentally. He is a pocket passer, that knows when to tuck it and run for a 1st. His deep ball has vastly improved, in both accuracy, strength and touch. This leads me to believe that he can improve even more as a player in total. He played behind a below average OL, and showed that he could step into a throw with pressure in his face. In the Texas game, he got hit over 10 times, but he didnt fold at the face of pressure. He also has some decent escapability. I remember watching him vs LSU and he dodged Mingo, who has elite closing speed, spun out of a tackle, and then threw a rope for a first down towards the sideline. He can make some big time plays. He had to make due with a absolutely horrible defense, that made him throw 520 times in 14 games, and almost no run game. He also was throwing to 2 guys that only stand 5'8 and 5'10. As good as Bailey and Austin are, their heights make the need for great ball placement crucial. The difference between Tavon Austin's catching radius and a 6'3 receiver is probably about 2 feet in every direction... And he completed 71% of passes with them. ... Thats just me at least.
