I hate this argument. Kerley is developing into a pretty good receiver. He certainly shouldn't prevent us from drafting a potential play maker though. We need all the play makers we can get. Didn't Kerley play most of last season on the outside anyway? I'm sure Morningwood could find a way to exploit Austin's world class quickness and speed and Kerley should have no impact on the decision of whether or not to take him. Our offense has SUCKED for years. Anyone not named Mangold or Ferguson is completely replaceable.
As LTJF pointed out, Austin's stats are mind blowing. Austin is a solid receiver with outstanding hands and someone saying having Kerley is OK instead of Austin is just crazy. I don't think we are going t draft Austin, but he has to be in conversations at #9.
In this day and age you need 3 receivers to be a good team. I would love to get a linebacker at number 9 and then a Austin at 13 (1st and 3rd this year for Revis and then swap our 3rd for their second next year).
I think it depend on who's at QB, if we put Austin in a Desean Jackson role we'd need a QB who has a cannon to get him the ball on the outside Hill is already the deep threat which is why I'd like a guy across from him who can run good routes and has reliable hands, Kerley is reliable as hell in the slot so no need to look for an upgrade If we drafted Austin, I'd try to move Kerley for a 4th and draft Aaron Dobson
Imagine a four receiver set of Holmes, Austin, Edwards/Hill, and Kerley with Goodson out of the backfield.
Any guy that can get to the endzone is not a luxury, especially for this team. I think it's a combination of being a weak draft and needing an impact player.
So since we don't have a QB we shouldn't try to make the offense better? Whoever eventually becomes the Jets QB is going to need good players around him. Or maybe we can just draft all defensive players until we have a good QB.
Austin instantly becomes our best playmaker. He also makes an impact on special teams and can positively affect our starting field position. The Jets offense is putrid and Austin would address multiple needs on this team. Would be a very good pick at 9.
I think he's saying Smith won't be throwing him the ball, so he may not be the same player? I doubt someone who has their avatar as Geno Smith is against drafting the guy.
Having Garrard throwing for a year and grooming a late round rookie or getting a QB next year wouldn't be bad. I know there's no guarantee we'll get a good one next year, but we shouldn't not fix our offense just because we don't have a quarterback. Very few quarterbacks would have thrived in the situation Sanchez was in by the end of last season (not implying he's the starter of the future). Garrard will at least not stunt the growth of the rookies and hopefully the rest of the offense will be polished enough for the new quarterback to develop well and then all pieces are moving.
the point is you draft a QB then draft players to fit with him now Austin would fit with most QB's anyway but this year without an answer at QB he'd be a luxury pick for us, if we go WR I want a big WR with great hands like Aaron Dobson or Keenan Allen so we can move Holmes around Love Austin just dont see the fit right now, wouldn't hate the pick, wouldn't love though
if he would have went to Georgia rather than Georgia Tech he'd be a 1st rounder because they would have taught him how to catch the ball
There is no WR in this draft class complete enough to warrant the 9. Desean Jackson is being referenced as a comparable player to Austin. Great, but i wouldn't use my 9 pick for Jackson either.. You can find players a step down from Austin in later rounds, who are still explosive, shifty, fast, and capable of making big plays. Foundation on offense stems from the QB and controlling LOS in my opinion, with exceptions made for unique talents at other offensive positions. Those exceptions can get it done even w/o a great framework in place on offense, ie Calvin Johnson, AP, AJ Green... I don't see Austin falling in that bucket (or Patterson) and wouldn't spend the 9 reaching in that direction.
