Hindsight is 20/20. It would have been great to get RGIII of course. However, when it comes down to it, this is a team sport. The Jets have a ton of holes still for 2013. Can you imagine going into 2013 with all the holes they have now, and then lacking draft picks to fill those holes? The lack of cap room also makes it impossible to fill those holes via FA. I would have loved RGIII, who wouldn't. We have to live in the now
The key to that isn't where he thinks they will be taken but where they should be taken. In both cases he has Geno outside the first round.
This right here is the reason. We have tons of holes right now with this exodus. If we were to give up 4 picks including multiple 1st round picks, how are we supposed to fill all those holes? All that for a QB and then absolutely zero supporting cast. No way. I'd rather take the chance on Geno and get weapons for him.
I stand firm that before we use 1st round draft pick at QB (a top 10 at that) we should wait till next year. I would MUCH rather go for Mike Glennon in the 3rd or even 4th over Geno at #9 all day.
If you want to copy and paste an article or part of an article where it states that, feel free. Id rather not pay for ESPN insider to read their "stuff". Simple question- in YOUR opinion, what makes Geno Smith not a first round talent? What is it- his mechanics, intangibles, accuracy, production, experience, footwork, arm strength...? If you had to give a short scouting report on him, what would it be.
So answer me this. Say we don't take a QB this draft in the top 10. Say we start the season with Garrard at QB and we go 8-8. Chances are, the teams who will we drafting ahead of us will be looking for a QB also in 2014, so now what? Your theory all depends on us completely throwing next season in the trash. Rex is not going to let this team fold and MM is going to be trying to prove himself. If we win at least 8 games, then what? You think the top 2 teams in the 2014 draft are going to give up their first round picks when they most likely will need a QB as well?
Yup. Considering they go in the draft, they will probably be taken 1 and 2. Now you are asking the 2 worst teams in the NFL the year prior to trade their top 1 or 2 for our first round pick when those two teams most likely will need a QB. Ain't gonna happen
I asked this question before to the Bridgewater supporters and got no answer. What makes Bridgewater such a can't miss prospect? I'm not being a douche, I just didn't follow him at all last year. I saw the bowl game where Florida pissed in their own sock, but I didn't see him play another down the entire season. Being that he plays in the Big East, and the conference is pretty poor, I'd like to know what makes him so good. Fill me in? Thnx
You guys are taking this wrong. I'm not saying Geno is a bad QB I just don't think he's as good as Teddy or Johnny. It's my perception and eye test that I don't think he will translate well to the NFL. I said the same about Cam Newton, so obviously I could be wrong (even though he loses as many games as he wins for Carolina). My final point about it is this. If we are to yet again take a QB in the top 10 I want to feel reeeeeally good about doing so. Not just an "oh hell I hope this works". I truly believe our best option if we were to draft a QB thi year would be to go for one in the 3rd and see if it pans out. Manuel or Glennon in the 3rd over geno at 9 overall will be a better scenario if we're talking about building through the draft.
But the fact still remains. We will probably need to fall within the first 3 picks in 2014, or one of the first 3 picks would trade for our pick. You think this would honestly happen?
Im a big fan of Bridgewater. If Geno doesnt make it to 9, I would be all for having a horrible year and being in position to draft him. Now if you consider reality? Its not very likely we draft in the top 2. Bridgewater has excellent pocket presence, he has great accuracy, and seems to have a maturity of the QB position beyond his years. I remember he broke his wrist and sprained his ankle vs Rutgers one week, and then played the following week in order to help his team advance to the BCS. That reminds me of Big Ben toughness. His touch on the deep ball is pretty great also... I think he's a very good prospect for next year. He will be (barring an injury or unforeseen regression) and top 2 pick. He could be on that RG3 level if he continues to progress. But like I said, you will need a top 2 draft pick to take. I dont think this team will be that bad next year, and I highly doubt a team in position to draft him will trade out of it because they will most likely need a QB. I think Geno is a good enough prospect that you can take him at 9 (assuming he makes it) and be happy about it to where you dont have to think about the what if's of Bridgewater.
I like taking the wait and see approach on the QBs this year, and possibly trying to get one one in the second, although I'm intrigued by Smith. The problem with waiting for next year is pretty simple. Our defense will be good enough that we most likely won't finish in the bottom 3 of the draft as others have said. And if those two QBs come out, no one is trading a top 3 pick unless it's one of those seasons where a team had it's star QB hurt (say RGIII or Luck gets hurt). Otherwise, we saw what a great QB prospect means when we saw the Colts say goodbye to Peyton after all those years. I think of it this way. If the Jets pick a QB in the 2nd or 3rd, they can throw him to the wolves for all I care. See what he's made out of. If he sucks, we have our top tier pick and we either pick up our franchise guy or we trade it for a bounty. If we pick a QB in the first, I don't think that first option is there, we'd almost be forced to trade like the Rams. It also depends on who drops. If Jordan or Jones drops, I might take one of them over Geno just because I think the difference between Jordan/Jones to a 2nd/3rd LB is greater than the difference between Smith and 2nd/3rd rd QB. But it will be interesting. And for how much we'll argue about it, watch some random team like the Bucs or something just trade up for Geno and make it moot.
Sounds good. Thanks for the info. I need to watch some tape when I get a chance. I usually don't really watch players closely until I know they are ready to come out. I definitely like the toughness factor. That said, I also liked Byron Leftwich cause of that, and he floundered. Thanks again
Some of you guys are so foolish *Hypothetical* Geno is there at 9 and the Jets are on the clock this forum will be filled with I wanna just wait for Teddy or Johnny next year Jets pass on Geno and take Margus Hunt Hunt has 15 sacks, 20 TFL's, 8 FF's and 12 PD's Jets finish 7-9 During the draft they want to move on from Sanchez yet have no leverage to move up far enough to pick Johnny or Teddy since we're picking say 17th Those same guys not wanting Geno this year next year would say something like "We should have picked Geno at 9 over a 4-3 DE who's maxed out his potential already and is 27 years old" The point is we gotta take a QB when we can while we can unless there's something we know that other teams dont One thing's for sure this fan base is going to hate anyone we draft
Bills sign Kolb... If Raiders trade for Flynn, Cards pick up Palmer, theres a very good chance he could be there at 9. Even if the two above things dont happen, theres still a chance he falls.
