I don't think Smith should be drafted in the top 10, so I'd look elsewhere. If he gets drafted that high, it's a team reaching for a QB. Position pick.
*sigh* C'mon this is easy... We either: A - Do poorly this year and draft a QB next year B - Do alright this year and draft a QB next year or C - Do really good this year and draft a QB next year Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel .<--- (period)
Personally, I have a hard time naming 15 players better than him... I can probably get to 10, and then there are players with some question marks. So if he is about rated between 10-15 (and thats if you are not a huge fan), is it that much of a reach at 9, especially considering his position? Joeckel Fisher Milliner Jones Star Floyd Warmack Jordan Werner Ansah Then after that, it can be picked apart... Cooper is a guard, Tavon Austin is great, but he is 5'8, Patterson is pretty raw when it comes to route running, Moore has upside concerns... If he can rank inside your top 15, Id say he's worth a shot. Thats just me at least.
I wish it was that simple. But do you honestly expect us to be a bottom 3 team? I expect us to be not so good, but Im not sure about that bad. And trading up into the top 3 to get one isnt likely because the teams that are there, are going to be there because of their QB play. Its not like you reserve a player and just be like "We will forfeit next year and draft Teddy Bridgewater"...
That scenario is the wait until 2015 scenario and then we're maybe winning a Super Bowl in 2018 or so. That's what putting the decision on the QB off does to a team. You go nowhere without the QB.
As a Jets fan we've been through enough shitty QB's in franchise history, why draft yet another (ala Mark Sanchez) unproven guy that no one thinks is a 1st round talent? This is a horrible draft class for QB's. best thing to do is wait till next year and see what happens.
Think about this. If we had Geno Smith and Austin, holy christ that would be awesome. Under a WCO with MM running things, that could be deadly. If we have 9 and 13, hell yeah you take him
I personally think we should trade this years #1 pick for pick/s next year, and IF we trade Revis do the same thing with one of those. Being gracious, we should still have at least a mid round pick next year (more likely a top 10). then with a plethora of early picks we maneuver into the 2nd spot and take John or Teddy.
great idea, this draft class is no good and next years is going to be really good. since we all know this, what team is going to be willing to give up next years picks for this years?
We wait till next year, and neither guy declares or is taken. Then you are left with McCarron, Boyd, and Murray. Those 3 all carry question marks going into their senior years. Besides that, Manziel needs to show he can do what he did last year without the supporting cast he had this year. So back to what you said about drafting shitty QBs. If you miss out on the top 2 (which you say are Bridgewater and Manziel), you are left with QBs that aren't guaranteed 1st round grade QBs. So what is the difference?
Who says he's not a first round talent? You and the knowledgable Hobbes are the only people i have EVER heard that from. And unproven? The guy has started 3 years in college, played in 3 different systems, excelled in each and improved each year. He also completed 71% of his 518 attempts for over 4200 yards. He had a .011 interception rate with only 6 on the year.... What is your definition of "proven" at the college level? Its this kind of thinking that breeds the thought of "lets wait for our own Andrew Luck"... Packers, Seahawks, 49ers, Ravens, Bengals, Chargers (with Brees), Patriots, Steelers didnt draft their QBs inside the top 10. How'd that fair for them? I think the main point to deduct from that, is that if a QB is developed properly, he can turn into a quality player. We have to put our faith in Idzik and let him try to fix our problems.
People are misconstruing this years draft class. There are little can't miss guys at the top of the draft, but the rest of the draft class is deep. For a team like the Jets that need to fill MANY spots, this years draft is very valuable.
If smith is available you grab him, if not get Warmack, if he is not there get Patterson. No more Defensive 1st round picks unless it is Clowney next year.
There isnt much. It comes down to putting your faith in Idzik. And if those 3 came out this year (in this class), they would be discussed as 2nd round picks that could potentially move up into the late first. None were viewed as better prospects than Geno.
To do that we've got to look at the teams that are built to win now or teams on the up-swing. - Tampa Bay - Carolina - Dallas - Chicago - Denver - Atlanta - Houston - Green Bay
This question is not so easy to answer, even if you're not a Geno fan. SCENARIO: If Geno is available, that means zero QB has been selected. These guys are all off the board: Fisher Joeckel Floyd Milliner Jarvis Jones & Dion Jordan should also be gone. [Star, Patterson, Mingo, Ansah] <-- one of them is likely to be gone also. Now do you take Geno? It's possible the top 3-4 OLB prospects are now off the board. The top two tackle prospects are also gone. The best CB is also gone. Now what? Reach for OLB, or grab the best safety? Now it's not so easy to turn Geno down. ======= In that situation, I'd lean towards Warmack or Vaccaro or Austin BUT I can't blame the Jets for choosing Geno over all those candidates.
Why would you trade picks this year for picks likely to be playoff picks next year? The 26 pick is going to be no part of any deal that a sane GM would do to move up to the 2.
