Yes I am very aware of McElroy's skill level, which is why I said at the very least someone with more upside. There is a very real possibility that our franchise QB is not coming from this draft. I hope it does but if it doesn't we at least need to draft someone later that can replace McElroy on the roster and have some hope that this Qb can eventually become a good QB. I don't believe Geno is making it to 9, if he doesn't I'd like to see us draft two QBs 2-7 and hope to strike gold with one of them. Add say a Tyler Wilson and Renfree to replace Simms and McElroy and now we got a real competition at the the QB position with some serious upside.
Raiders acquire Flynn. Think that leaves only the Cardinals & Bills as landing spots for Geno. Still don't think Geno is there when Jets pick but the odds have gone up a little bit.
I'm thinking Smith is 50/50 to be there at this point. Chiefs probably going OT. Jacksonville probably aren't going to take Smith on the 2. They get either the best DT or the 2nd best OT in that slot and some people think the 2nd best OT is actually #1. Raiders got Flynn and will now release Palmer. Palmer goes to the Cardinals. Eagles have Vick and Foles and probably are not adding Geno Smith to that. Lions have Stafford. Browns... Hmm. They really need players on defense though. Still... Hmm. Cardinals got Palmer. Bills. That's the question. All of this probably leaves the Bills and the Jets in a staring contest. 2008 The Pats were right behind the Jets at 7. As soon as the Jets bit on Gholston the Pats traded down and eventually took Mayo. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens here. Bills take Smith and the Jets trade down some.
^ i don't think carson palmer takes arizona out of the smith market.palmer is god for 1-2 more years max. it would be a good position for arizona to have that veteran guy with the rookie waiting in the wings
I would say it does. Think of it this way, If they get Palmer, they still need to improve their Oline. No way do they pass up on a solid OT prospect like Fisher or Johnson to groom a QB. They just don't have that luxury. Drafting one of those OTs and then getting a guy like Barkley in the second or Wilson in the third is probably likelier. But that's just my opinion.
^ i can agree with you. but i also can see where they pull the trigger on smith.s.f. and seattle are the class of that division . the only way arizona is catching them is with a good qb. palmer maybe better than what they had last year, but he is not the answer if they are trying to win the division. smith might not be this year either but he is a step in the right direction
The game is won in the trenches, if you have no offensive line it doesnt matter who you have at QB. Again, drafting Smith at 7 is a luxury, a luxury they cannot afford. Building an Offensive Line, getting a pass rusher, and then getting a QB to groom is where Arizona is more than likely to go in order to improve their team for the future. And as you said with Seattle and San Fran, they're the class of that division, and both of their biggest strengths is the offensive line. This is the strategy they both went through years ago (building up the oline and grooming a QB). The Cardinals already have a solid defense, similar to what Seattle and San Fran did before they stepped up.
i understand the ol needs help. but 2nd round ol are much more common than 2nd round winning qb's. if you don't have a qb and there is 1 available you take him, arizona with or without palmer does not have a qb
So... a few of the people that voted would prefer to take a QB in the 2nd round, as opposed to the same QB in the 3rd round...that doesn't make ANY sense.
I'm would be fine with Manuel or Nassib in the 2nd or 3rd, although it would be great if Jets stopped using the 2nd and 3rd round picks to get projects draft after draft. It's inevitable that Jets will need someone to take over when Sanchez gets cut after this season and they might as well get that guy in this draft and develop him for a year. As long as it isn't Geno with a first rounder, I'm fine.
With Flynn possibly going to the Raiders, Palmer rumored to AZ, and Kolb going to the Bills, this might just be the perfect storm for Geno Smith to be the next QB of the Jets. With Grimes going to Miami, I can see the Revis trade going down prior to the draft. If the Jets swing the 13th pick, I can certainly see this happening. Not sure if I'm 100% in for that. However, it is a definite possibility.
In 3 years as the starter at WVU Geno Smith threw 99 TD's and 20 Int's. 1.4% Int Pct over 1,416 throws and he clearly wasn't playing it safe all the time with the 99 TD's. There'll be some ledge jumpers if the Jets take Smith on the 9 but I wouldn't be among that group.
I was a big fan of Smith until the bowl game. I pictured him playing in those conditions in Metlife and it made me think twice about him. I still think we need to grab a QB this year, we can't bank on 2014, there are just too many variables with that crop (like the top guys not even declaring for example). If the Jets went with Smith at 9 and then started Garrard for 2013, I could deal with that. IF we can get the 13th pick from Tampa for Revis, I would feel better about taking a swing for Smith. That said, if they could get 13, how would you feel about Austin? They obviously already have chemistry. My first 3 picks would look like this: 9-Smith 13- Austin 39- Warford/Cooper
Yeah, taking Austin after Smith would be a good move. Give the man his best weapon coming in the door in NY. Take a TE in the 3rd. Take a G on the 2nd or 5th. Grab a rush linebacker in the 4th. Let Garrard play the first few games until the new protection scheme is working and then gradually work in Smith.
Austin would be a more versatile version of Desean Jackson in Morty's offense. If your scenario plays out, I would be super happy with that. I think even the Smith detractors could deal with that.
this, he is the perfect qb for a rex ryan team. doesn't turn it over and has a high comp % so the clock keeps ticking.
