Duh...we can't afford Sanchez and Palmer BUT we can trade Sanchez for Palmer. Their cap numbers are very similar and Palmer said he would rather play elsewhere and take a paycut then stay with the Raiders: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...less-elsewhere-than-take-paycut-with-raiders/
This is a roster that excites you? Because what I see, is a 5-11 team. You are right that Revis and Holmes are coming back from an injury, but they could also not be as good as they were previously (mostly Holmes). Holmes is pretty much past his prime and is coming off a major injury and surgery. Revis may very well not be on the team this year, and is he is, he might be traded at some point during the season. If he doesnt get a new contract from us, I dont see how he is on the team past week 8. Keep in mind Hill is also coming off knee surgery, and is still extremely raw and inexperienced. IMO, you are asking him too much of him if you think he'll be anything other than a good #4. So, IMO, we still have a need at WR. Especially considering the long term of this team and that Holmes probably will be cut with his salary next year. Goodson has been nothing more than a backup and has had injury and fumbling issues. Right now, he's a good #2 with some upside. He could become a McKnight clone, but he could become a good RB. Either way, we have no clue and can not expect him to be a workhorse or Mornhinweg's Lesean McCoy. Colon could turn out to be a good signing also, but he has a significant injury history and is almost 30. Garay is nothing more than depth (which is needed), but I wouldnt expect a significant contribution from him. We dont know what to expect from either safety, and counting on both to play significant time might be a mistake (although it might be our only option). Until we find ou future QB, I wouldnt expect much to be honest. This is not a playoff team on paper. Realistically, its a bottom 5 roster. Even with a solid draft, we arent going to improve significantly because every team has a draft class and improves through it. Ive said this before, but we have needs at every position other than T, C, DE and arguably NT and ILB (assuming Davis and Ellis can step into big roles, but there are still question marks).
Rex Ryan will have a top ten defense, even with the defections, and it will be more dynamic if they add a pass rush. Marty Mornhinweg has no where to go but up with what the Jets did last year. Sans Sanchez and Greene. and what we put out there at WR, QB and the whole circus. I am excited to see what RR can do with a veteran - read: competent - QB and Palmer fits the bill. Hell, it is possible that Sanchez can become that game manager under a WC style offense. Don't forget that while you are hedging on the returns of Revis and Holmes, the Jets fielded a team largely WITHOUT THEM last year. So in truth your analysis boils down to: the jets roster will be significantly worse with Revis and Holmes (and Hill) this year (even conceding the possibility they aren't 100% the players they were prior), than without them last year... is that correct? Now, add to the defense a stud pass rusher (mingo, jordan, ansah, moore, hunt, etc), offensive guard (Warmack, Cooper, Warford), WR (Austin, Patterson), or TE (Eifert). Add perhaps Dawan Landry... cmon man, that isnt a worse roster than last year. consider the change in offensive scheme alone.
Palmer is definitely an upgrade and isn't a bad QB at all. He's just been on some bad teams. With that said i'd rather take a chance on a guy like Kevin Kolb and see what he has then Palmer. It least Kolb is younger, he's got more upside at this point in his career then Palmer does.
games 62 compl % 55.1 yards 12,092 ypa 6.48 TD 68 INT 69 Fumbles 26 rating 71.7 For 62 regular season games this is the utter crap Rex Ryan has had to deal with at QB. 55% completion %. a negative Touchdown to INT ratio (absurd) and negative TD to Turnover ratio by like 40% (!). And two sub-3000 yard production years from the QB. Carson palmer's norm is better than Sanchez's best (and only decent year). games 122 compl % 62.5 yards 29,465 ypa 7.17 TD 189 INT 130 Fumbles 37 rating 86.2 Palmer has a positive TD-INT ratio, a postive TD-TO ratio, and is coming off a 4000 yard season, with his best QB rating in over 5 years. Give Rex Ryan that. Mix. Bake on 350. Wait until golden.
We will only be able to grab one of the players you named most likely. Besides Warford and Hunt, all of those players will be gone by the start of the 2nd round. Adding one of those players will help, yes, but how much do you truly expect them to do year 1? If we are lucky, we get 8 sacks out of a rookie OLB. I mean, if you expect them to be Von Miller or Aldon Smith year 1, you are probably going to be disappointed. Out of all of those players, Tavon Austin would probably make the biggest immediate impact, and I dont think its nearly enough to significantly improve the offense. My analysis is honestly nothing like what you concluded it to believe. Let me say this, Rex may put up a top 10 defense, but he's going to have to do that with only 3-4 starters returning (depending on if Revis stays). And it seems, you seem so definitive that Revis will be here next year and that he will be here the entire year. Unless we give him a 80-100 million dollar deal, I dont see that happening. So honestly, I dont really think Revis will be returning next year on the team. Let the fact that we could very well be returning 3 starters on defense sink in. And so far we havent really upgraded anywhere. Those new starters are going to be either young players assuming much larger roles, or new players on the team learning Rex's pretty complicated defense. Having a top 10 defense wont be easy or so definite, especially without Revis. Seahawks, 49ers, Ravens, Broncos, Bengals, Texans, Steelers, Bears- all teams that I can most definitely see better than us on defense. Thats 8 teams. I can name about 5 others that I can see being better than us... On offense, I dont really think we upgraded anywhere so far. We've just added question marks that have potential to be an upgrade. We still lost Keller, Greene, Slauson and Moore. As much as people dislike them and think their losses arent significant, you still have to replace their production- adding in more question marks. You are also putting in a 3rd offensive scheme in as many years. It may be beneficial overall, but there will be a fair share of bumps in the road. Thats not even factoring in the QB position, which you seem to think Carson Palmer is so destined to be a Jet. The way I see how you are viewing this, is that any potential question mark (which there are many), are going to be upgrades. Me? Im not going to do that; many of those question marks could likely turn into a negative, even if its just for this upcoming season
The Raiders arent gonna trade Palmer for Sanchez, Thats like trading a broken glass for a glass with a hole in the bottom of it, no matter what you cant take a drink
To be completely honest, I am starting to change my mind about this. Now that the Bills are signing a QB, we have more of a chance to grab Geno Smith. If we could trade Revis for TB's 13th pick, we could possibly take Geno Smith and Tavon Austin in the first.
why keep Sanchez? He would be too costly as a clipboard holder. Barkley and Palmer would easily beat him out! McElroy would be the way to go for clipboard holder rather then Sanchez!
the only reason to keep sanchez around is he is a bit like a bitch cunt of a wife who is more expensive to get rid of than she is to keep. keep him i think he is like 8 or 9 mill against the cap, get rid of him today and he counts 17 mill. get rid of him after june 1 and he is 12 this year and 5 next year. i am not positive on those numbers but thats what i remember reading on the board. i am not sure what the hit is if they cut him after next year. it may be more than 5 mill for next year, if thats the case it just gives us more reason to cut him now, take most of the hit this year and be better off next year. i can definitely see them cutting his sorry ass as soon as it becomes a bit more financially feasible. june 1 cut is my prediction.
