I'm a big Jets fan but I don't get to see many college football games due to living in N.Ireland. Once the season ends most people seem to go into draft mode about who we should select.

Here's the question I want to know. What exactly are you guys/girls talking about in regards "watching tape" on players. Do you record every game a player is involved in and actually watch them play each game them make a judgement on them? or is it more of a watch them a few times, get a feel for a player and place him in a certain round in the draft??

I'd love to know because guys like Mike Mayock would say, "I watched the tape on this guy" and I get from that that he basically watched each snap a player he wants to grade play, then makes observations on said player. Now that's his job and he has the time to do such a thing, but for people on these forums are you guys using small sample sizes to judge a player and a fair amount of guess work to make a decision or is there more to it?

Maybe you all watch an insane amount of college football and have seen nearly every player mentioned but I'm just curious because outside of games on ESPN over here I see very little so I have to rely on youtube clips etc which could be cut any way really to make a player look like the next coming of LT.

Sorry for the stupid questions, just curious from a foreign fans perspective because I'm hugely interested in the draft processes through pro days, combines, interviews and draft. It's just crazy interesting and I'm looking for a bit more incite really.

    Thanks for any replies!!

There is a ton of video available on you tube. Search for a prospects name and you'll find them vs some team, it typically shows every snap they played that game. It allows you to see 20+ snaps of a player in 5 to ten mins.

    Here's an example for ya.

I do watch a good ammount the old fashioned way as well. Try to avoid highlight reels if you can.

So this is what most people would do in regards working out who looks good to select going forward, watch clips of a game put together and uploaded on youtube?

    Thanks for the reply btw

If they show every snap it's a good tool. Much like baseball, a several hour game can be cut down to a few mins of actual action when You take out the commercial breaks and time between plays.

Between that and watching the games on live TV or on my DVR I sped way too much time watching NCAA football lol.

Yeah, you have to watch the full games and it really helps when they outline the player before every play. It's easier to isolate on them and figure out where they're lined up and what their likely responsibilities are on the play.

Highlight reels are useless because they don't set the context for a play and the music tends to drive away rational thinking.

I'm kind of in the same boat as I don't really watch college games, although I might start.

BTW, whereabouts in Northern Ireland? I was born there and still have lots of family there.

Larne, on the East coast of the country 20mins from Belfast. Basically a harbor town which is the closest port between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Ah OK. Most of my family are in Armagh or Monaghan & Cavan in the south.
