the 2001 team was mostly leftovers from the previous 2 teams that couldn't make the postseason. 2002 was completely retooled, 2004 was completely retooled again.

IMO, a healthy Chad Pennington (meaning no prior shoulder injuries) and given the overall talent on the team, the Jets have significantly improved records going into the 2008 season...

2008 - The Jets go 12-4 ~ The Jets beat Oakland, Seattle and Miami and improve by 3 games, win the division and host WC home game.
2009 - The Jets go 13-3 ~ The Jets split with Miami and beat Atlanta, Jacksonville and Buffalo, win the division, have a bye and host a home game in the division round.
2010 - The Jets go 14-2 ~ The Jets beat Baltimore, Miami and Chicago and improve by 3 games, win the division, are the #1 seed in the AFC, have a bye and host a home game in the division round.

The NFC Super Bowl teams were Arizona (2008 season), New Orleans (2009) and Green Bay (2010). The Jets beat Arizona in 2008 and lost closer games then the score reflects with Sanchez as QB versus New Orleans in 2009 (24-10 away) and Green Bay in 2010 (9-0 at home). IF the Jets made the Super Bowl those 3 years, I believe they definately beat Arizona, likely defeat Green Bay and play a toss-up close game versus New Orleans. The road to the Super Bowl in 2009 and 2010 would be significantly easier with home games both years and the #1 seed in 2010.

You guys kill me. These boards were harder on Pennington than Sanchez. Anyone defending Pennigton was a homer and an Apologist. Pennington did nothing but throw pick 6's. This one will sound familiar he never hits his receivers in stride.

This fan base will never be happy with the QB unless they play perfect every game an win the superbowl every year.

    Yeahreally.

Kenny O was definitely a very good Qb. He would have been even better with decent pass protection from the OL.

I liked Chad at first despite his rather obvious limitations, but it seemed to me even in his first big year that the Raiders showed how to defend him. Not every opponent had the best personnel to match up like Oakland did, but as time went on it was not only the injuries that held Chad back. It seemed more and more opponents lined up and dared Chad to beat them with passes he really could not throw at an NFL level.

Of course to some extent his inability to throw throws like the out pattern twenty plus yards down field were probably aggravated by the injuries, but imo that was never a play he could pull off with authority.

But in the end, your starting Qb is not doing you much good if he is riding hte bench with injuries anywhere near as much as Chad did. In fairness to Muck the one good thing about him is he did not miss outings. Of course the Jets might have been better off if Muck had Chad's fragility and a decent backup Qb.

I'm not convinced Chad could get through the playoff gauntlet against top teams in bad weather on a regular basis, but I'm convinced before he hurt his shoulder he had enough arm to carry us through 2 games in decent weather and win a SB either in good weather or a dome.

Very smart, great timing and his arm was good enough to exploit small tells by even good defensive teams. If you have a consistent winner you will get a couple of cracks when the wind isn’t blowing or you’re in a dome or good weather. Chad was good enough to get it done once or twice pre-injury.

Pennington was a good, not great NFL QB, when healthy.

The problem I have with that article is the part about their being a debate and rivalry between Brady and Pennington. Even if he stayed healthy his whole career, thats NO contest.

Pennington was a good NFL quarterback but he never would've been anything too special. Guys like him win Super Bowls though (Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Mark Rypien, etc.) and he could've won one if given the right pieces and a quality coaching staff, but he's not the type to lead a team there on his own.

When Mangini got rid of Pennington, I was in favor of it as I felt it was time to move on and that his ceiling just wasn't high enough. Maybe* maybe they got rid of him a year too early, but I'd rather a year too early than a year too late...

What is ironic to me is that Pennington is quite possibly the most opposite QB to Mark Sanchez.
Pennington was smart - Sanchez is dumb. Pennington knew his limitations, Sanchez does Not.. Pennington protected the ball and knew the key to winning was completing passes. Sanchez doesn't even know what that is..
Sanchez is more gifted physically, a stronger arm and a tougher body.. something Pennington could've used.

Maybe someday we will get a Qb that can put enough of it together, Jets fans. Maybe.

In every season Chad started at least 10 games he made the playoffs.

Assuming he was healthy every year, and what the league has evolved into during that time, the Jets would have been in the playoffs almost every year and with enough chances in the playoffs you are bound to at least make the superbowl.

This is why the Jets are a long way from ever winning a SuperBowl Jet fans expect way to much out of the QB position.

His ceiling was not high enough really what does that mean enough pieces in place? Every team needs the right Pieces in place to make it to and win a superbowl. The years Brady won the SuperBowl the defense was the focus of the team,Peyton SuperBowl winning year they road the back of the defense through the playoffs. Elway could not win a Superbowl until he got a running game.

When the Jets got rid of Pennington we brought in a Superbowl winning QB that could not make into the playoffs. Pennington made the playoffs with a crappy Dolphins team and outplayed Favre twice that year.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that Pennigton would not have been just as good or really close to Brady without the Injuries. Look what he did with them.

Hey bring in the next guy and after a couple years start bashing him to we have a great track record in these city of running QBs out of town and not developing young Qbs. Lets try again get rid of Sanchez bring in Geno and/or Barkley the sides are already lined uped of who will love and hate them.

The fans are not the reason why the Jets are not good.

There was a lot of rambling in that post.

As others has said, the fans have nothing to do with if our Jets get close to a SB or not. The fans didn't get rid of Pennington anyway - that was the front office's decision. I was just merely stating that I agreed with it. If you don't agree with how the Jets are run and decisions that are made, you should consider blaming the guys running it and making the decisions - not the fans who like you have nothing to do what-so-ever with how things are done....

As for your other points, If you fail to see why Tom Brady, John Elway, and Peyton Manning aren't vastly superior to Chad Pennington than there's really no way I can argue with you.

The problem for the Jets during Chad's time with the team is that it coincided with the Brady years in NE. Even a healthy Chad on a good Jet team had to deal with NE. In addition that period saw some tough teams in Indy and Pitt that I don't see even a healthy Chad making enough of a difference.

I suppose the 2005 and 2007 Jet teams would have been in much better shape with a healthy Chad. 2005 was interesting because it was not a strong year for the Pats, who finished only 10-6 that year. But that year I wouldn't think the Jets would have gotten by either the Colts, who were 14-2, or the Steelers who won it all. And 2007 would have been no go since the Pats had a great season that year, obviously. Would the Jets have kept Chad in 2008 and not gone for Favre if Chad was healthy? Probably. So maybe 2008 was a year the Jets would have had a good shot at the SB. Maybe 2009, too, but it's not like those two seasons were likely to have broken with an SB for the Jets, with 2009 being the year the Colts were near perfect (before losing to NO, but I don't see the Jets in 09 making it to the SB for the AFC instead of Indy).

I think the year that is instructive on the NE angle is 2006. Sure Chad had already been injured to both his wrist and shoulder by then. But by the regular season and really through it he played injury free. Was his game limited by the previous injuries? Probably, but he played well enough to win comeback player of the year, and the Jets went 10-6. But...

I think if you look at the Pats - Jets rivalry in 2006, Chad was actually part of the problem. The Jets split the regular season games, but it was the defense that really won the game the Jets took from the Pats, while it was Chad's int thrown to Bruschi that killed the Jets' chances late in the regular season game the Jets lost to NE, the second of the season. And of course the Jets again faced the Pats in the wild card game, but again it was an interception by Samuel thrown by Chad that eliminate any chance of a comeback for the Jets. I wouldn't hang that loss on Chad, of course, but he did not put the Jets in a good situation with his interception.

And of course even if the Jets had somehow gotten by NE, the Colts were too awesome in 06, and of course won it all.

We can't leave out 2004, though. Pitt won that playoff game against the Jets, but by then Chad not only had already suffered that wrist problem but also an injured rotator cuff. Pitt won the SB after getting past the Jets, but could a healthy Chad have made a difference in that game?

To summarize, while the Jets may well have had some other chances in the playoffs in years like 08 and even a better chance with Chad than Muck in 09, other years would have been problematic due to dominance especially by the Pats, but also the Steelers and especially in 09 for the Colts. And the Colts again in 06 even if a healthier Chad helped the Jets get past a relatively weaker NE team (which I don't buy based on the discussion above), there were the Colts blocking their path. Bad timing would have been an issue even for a healthy Chad. That all leaves 2004 as the spot where they might have done enough better to win it all with a healthy Chad.

In short, realistically the one year that a healthy CHad just might have made enough of a difference was probably 2004. Other years there was probably too much to overcome.

healthy Chad helped us beat Indy 41-0 in playoffs
injured Chad saw us come w/in a FG(where we missed 2 makeable ones) at Pittsburgh.
healthy Chad saw us go into Foxboro and whip the Pats in week 16 in 2002 which kept NE from the AFC East title and a return trip to the playoffs.

We had good Ds, we had Curtis, we had quality weapons in the pass game. A healthy Chad would have made a HUGE difference. NE still would have won more but we would have had chances to reach SBs and win them.

Also, Pitt didn't win the SB after beating us in 2004. They got whipped by NE the next week, they won the SB in the 2005 season.

Some btw might think the foregoing analysis of mine gave too short shrift to the Jets chances in 08. Perhaps. I still think 2004 would have been a better shot with a healthy Chad. Of course in 04 I should have mentioned the CS was an issue as well, while in 08 Mangini was probably better than the Herm regime, but CS was arguably an issue in 08, as we no doubt all remember, even if Chad were healthier.

A healthy Pennington would have been in the discussion no doubt in my mind. The fan base put so much pressure on the front office that they actually cheered when he got hurt to put in Clemens.

The fans and the New York media are did with Noodle arm what they are now doing with the butt fumble. The fact was then is was not the QB that was holding the team back (we got a hall of famer) just like today Sanchez is not holding the team back.

Lets focus on that until we another cure moniker that we can run the next QB out of town. The NY media says the blind and dumb sheep go right along.

Kenny O was a good QB too. However if I had my choice between a healthy KO vs CP, I'd take CP.
