Everything in the article about Chad is true. He did however have real problems against high caliber pressure defenses. His forte was accuracy and touch not zip on the ball and he wouldn't attempt some of the throws that you have to make on a regular basis against a tough attacking defense. My lasting memory of Chad is the touch throws that he made over and over again to the corner of the end zone. By 2006 that was about the only throw he'd try to make inside the 15.
oh god i remember some of those wobbly fades haha. he always placed it good but it wasnt pretty lookin at all haha
I can't remember the game but I remember Chad setting some kind of NFL record with 15-20(?) straight completions in a row.
Didn't the early Pats LBs had several picks due to them jumping the short to intermediate routes and not respecting the deep ball?
1. True, Pennington wasn't blessed with elite arm strength. 2. Neither was Montana. 3. I don't think you realized this but that gay bitch up in Foxborough wasn't blessed with elite arm strength either. (His arm strength got better as his career went along.) 4. With Terry Bradway at GM, it is reasonable to assess that Pennington would have had to absorb tremendous amount of blows from the opposing defenses. Bradway never valued OL much. (And Jets let that dumb fuck run the GM post. Good god.) 5. Same goes to Herm the moron. He should have told Chad to never take serious hits - his value comes from being the QB on the field, not a patient on a hospital bed after all. 6. If you look at how Jets drafted after they drafted Chad, you can clearly see how clueless Bradway is. QB spot won't be the problem spot that it is now, but the team would have still sucked big fucking time.
That was a painful read. Penny was the first true Jet ace QB since Namath. My favorite player. Smart, articulate, a class act. It was difficult to watch his demise.
That was always a danger early on. Later in his career he had figured out his limitations and the interceptions mostly weren't of that nature. I think he was one of the most self aware athletes I've ever seen. The year he got replaced by Clemens he was hitting 68% of his passes but he wasn't taking many chances and that's why Mangini replaced him. He had great touch. Watching him and Coles and then Cotchery in the corner of the end-zone and tip-toes for 1st downs on the sidelines was kind of amazing. I don't think the early injury to his wrist was avoidable. The first shoulder injury might have been but the one in early 2005 was probably Chad's fault. People remember it as when he got slammed down by the Jaguars in week 3 but I'm pretty sure he actually aggravated the shoulder in week 1 against the Chiefs. There was a pass play that was a broken play with the pocket collapsing in the 2nd quarter and Chad stepped up in the pocket and got hit a glancing blow by two defensive players one on each side of him and fumbled the ball. He picked it right back up and threw a pass to somebody for a 1st down but he was kind of gingerly rotating his shoulder as he went back to the line for the next play. He had a bunch of fumbles after that on the day and Dave Fiedler finally replaced him with 2 minutes to go and the Jets down big. He didn't really look fully under control from then to the moment the Jaguars put him on the ground on his shoulder and the season was mostly over for him. He was like an egg back there but he was also a really tough guy. When Dave Fiedler went down right after Chad the guy who replaced him in the game was Chad. I don't think I've ever seen that before. That's pain management.
The wrist one, probably. The shoulder, probably not. And, like I was saying above, he was taking beatings in the backfield for as long as I can remember. (That moron Bradway...) Other than his rookie season (by some cosmological coincidence) he was there taking beating after beating actually. Yes, I remember this too. I was screaming at the TV as well, saying "I have seen better ROAD PYLONS blocking for QB that these trashes!" First and foremost, his name is Jay, not Dave. Secondly, Chad should have been pulled immediately after the hit - at least for a series or two, so the medical staff can examine the injury. That one is on Herm the moron.
Who knows, of course, but what is beyond question is that before he got hurt Pennington had demonstrated that he was an elite QB - both from a statistical point of view and from the point of view of being a leader and a winner. The comparisons with Joe Montana were very serious back then. Sigh.
Yeah, we didn't see enough of him for the name to stick well. It's hard to say which of the hits did him but he got sacked multiple times including 2 in 3 plays, both fumbles, at the start of the 3rd quarter. He was probably playing hurt from the KC game onwards and then the Jaguars just took him out. Fiedler comes in on the next series and goes 3 and out. The series after that Fiedler gets sacked and leaves and Chad is the guy coming back in. It's really hard for a head coach under pressure to make the right calls about his star QB. We saw that with RGIII in the playoffs last season.
Wasnt Pennington taken above Brady? i know alot of people were taken before Brady but was that the same draft year for both of them?
Brady was a sixth round afterthought. 150 odd players were taken before Brady. Cough...greg anderson....cough...lol
If Chad was durable we'd have seen a SB by now and he'd still be our starting QB but that isn't Jet luck. Namath wasn't durable, Freeman Mcneil wasn't durable, Klecko had injury problems, the best Jet I have ever seen is about to be traded, etc...
the curiosity of pennington and staying helathy is one thing but we have to also ask ourselves..... regardless of CP's health, did we have faith in the immortal duo of bradway and edwards to build, retool, and coach a consistent winner. no freakin way IMO. the 2001/2002 success was a nice coming together of veterans of the parcells years and new blood from the initial 2001 draft of bradway, which IMO, was his best. one last gasp in 2004 despite edwards sideline inexperience and nonsense. we were cooked after that as the less than average drafting began to catch up to us - topped off by the kicker in round 2.
