There were several comments made about Davis' off-field issues. Can someone just provide some brief examples of those issues, along with approximate dates (if there were any incidents)?

I believe he's tested positive for marijuana at least once. He was also involved in an altercation at a club... quick blurb on that from wikipedia:
On January 10, 2011, a woman by the name of Makini R. Chaka filed a civil lawsuit against the Davis for an altercation that occurred between the two at a nightclub in Washington, D.C. Davis was accused of assaulting Chaka by dumping his drink on her.[19][20] The case is currently ongoing and instead of hiring a lawyer, Davis has chosen to represent himself in court

The marijuana thing -- I can live with that. If it results in more trouble for him, then, oh well; but I'll condone that lack of judgement over repeated DUI's, domestic abuse, etc.

The altercation with Chaka could be a red flag; but how many times do we hear about athletes' involvement in altercations which ultimately results in nothing?

I guess my point is that if Davis has legit off-field issues, then he can't/shouldn't be relied upon fully (as far as expectations go), yet, I'd still sign him to a short, cheap contract, like Idzik has been doing with the other FAs thus far. And if these off-field issues are not actual "issues," then signing him to a short, cheap contract is a good idea, as long as there's still the expectation that he won't be fully available because of his previous injury(s).

How the hell is pouring a drink on a woman "assault"? Not really the classiest move but definitely nothing criminal by my standards, unless it was scalding hot water or something.

    And everybody smokes weed nowadays.

The most upsetting part of this whole story is that the girls name is fucking Chaka.

We need a play maker on offense and I don't like the players or positions considering our needs in the second round, unless a TE falls to us. Right now it doesn't look like a play maker on offense is going to happen in the first as the value is not there and I like the idea of getting a guy like Dion Jordan or Jarvis Jones.

But with so many holes on this team, and the fact that the offense must be addressed I would like some more flexibility in the second.
What I'm getting at is this is our only MUST sign free agent this offseason. If we are playing "moneyball" he will come at a discounted price because of his off field issues, but he is a dynamic playmaker who gives us a lot of flexibility going into the draft. This is one signing I would love to see.

    UPDATE!!!

Hell yeah man! Make this happen Idzik!

He seems to have a bad taste in his mouth with Washington. They are not offering anything substantial because of his injury it seems. This is a perfect chance for us to jump on this guy. It should come down to us or Buffalo.

This isnt a competition with the Bills. The Bills are very cautious about his achilles and off the field issues. They have their lowball price, and if he doesnt accept, that's fine too. If the Bills wanted him they wouldnt be this cautious. If the Jets are willing to forego the risks with Davis and offer him a nice contract then the Jets can grab him.

He could be valuable to this team especially in the west coast offense. I hope we sign him (on the cheap) and hope he stays healthy.

adding davis with a rookie from this years draft - to join cumberland - would give us a very decent TE package.

and an absolute necessity given our QB status.
