Yep. This is why I think it's more than likely that Idzik signed up for the rest of Rex's contract through 2014. It's possible that the Jets have been going on the idea that Sanchez is going to start this year and then if it's an off-year both he and Rex are out the door together at the end of it. The problem with that theory is that 2013 is likely to be a marketing nightmare if that's the case. Then at the end of the season you'll have Rex going out the door and marketing his replacement will be hard. Rex takes up a lot of media space and almost nobody the Jets can find is going to be able to fill that space without over-extending in the process. So you have marketing issues extending into 2014 at that point. I think it's more likely that the Jets plan to keep Rex barring a total collapse of the team. Give Rex enough talent and he can win a Super Bowl. He proved that when he took Mark Sanchez and the Jets to two AFCCG's in a row. So Idzik is here with the mandate to provide enough talent for Rex to win a Super Bowl. It's possible the team will collapse next season and make the plan unworkable but it's more likely the rebuild starts on schedule and the Jets next window opens in 2015 with Rex leading a team built for him to win with instead of a team built for Eric Mangini with a few Rex-inspired patches.
well said, i do think that rex is in the future plans for this franchise, and i think that is the right move. like you said, give the man enough talent, and i believe he can win a superbowl, so hopefully idzik is just worrying about that rather than anything else. so yeh, i dont think that the team is planning on not keeping rex around for long term, and mornhinweg is likely going to be here more than one year as well, hes gonna need to do some serious work next season to be considered for any promotions considering his previous stint as a hc, so yeh, its very likely hell be here for a while
I don't know if it is a sure thing, not by any means, that Rex will be around after next year. And I would have preferred he be fired at the end of last season. But the logic of keeping him does not require he be fired next off season. Not by any means. The fact that he's on the last year of his contract does not indicate much, either. Woody had no reason, certainly, to extend Rex's contract, and of course Idzy would have said so, too. It's not so much that 13 is a make or break year for Rex as that if he craps the bed the downside is limited. Woody after all does not want to pay the HC to sit at home in 14 if Rex works himself out of a job. But at the same time if things seem to be going to the satisfaction of Idzy and Woody, then they can give Rex an extension and bring him back in 14. How many more years will likely depend on how well he does.
we all know the team is gonna suck, we say that this is a make or break season, but what in your opinions need to happen for him to keep his job?
For us that don't want Smith the sun is shining, the Raiders are a big players and way ahead of us on the chart.
I think Idzik wants a pick this year for Revis to trade up for Geno Smith. It was prob mentioned, but just saying, even if the Raiders are ahead of us, for how long?!
The cost of getting from the 9 to the 2 is pretty steep. 9 + 13 + 4th + 6th steep and that's assuming the Jaguars would go pretty much straight value on the traditional chart. The Harvard Chart (http://harvardsportsanalysis.wordpress.com/2011/11/30/how-to-value-nfl-draft-picks/) makes that trade lopsided in Jacksonville's favor by 68% over value.
Geno Smith is not worth trading up for. All these holes on the Jets roster and people think we'll trade up?
We can look at this thread in a few years if Geno Smith becomes a monster with some other team and be like "Look the Jets almost drafted Geno!"
If the Jets trade up for anyone this year it's going to give me a sinking feeling that we're on the same bullshit path we've been on.
Absolutely, but I really don't think we are trading up in this draft. If Idzik were going to trade up in any draft, it would be in 2014 and even then I don't see him doing it. Trading up is a tough move to make. You could either win a lot or lose a ton.
Why tie down the next HC with a QB he had no say in. Kind of like our GM being stuck with Rex. A trade to move up for any player this year would suck!
The next HC is going to be Rex Ryan LOL Unless he goes 4-12, he will be the guy next year and the year after.
