This is exactly it. We will not get a hometown discount for Revis's services, we will in turn need to pay a premiumn for it. That's why it's very clear that he needs to go. Some of you need to come to grips with this.
i love it when fans pretend to have a crystal ball and that they know what everybody's bargaining position is currently and will be in the future.
Serious? That's the only option huh? Good thing you're not GM, because clearly you wouldn't have a clue. This is a fluid situation, obviously it can drag out til training camp, pre-season timeframe. But if we don't get a boatload for him, or at least market value, then obviously you HAVE to re-sign him. Simple as that. He wants to be New York Jet, that has never been in doubt. Just get a deal done. And that will depend on Woody's willingness to open up the checkbook for a Hall of Fame caliber player. And don't give me any salary cap nonsense, we'll have plenty of space.
The salary cap nonsense isn't nonsense. It's cold hard fact. The nonsense is about Woody opening up his checkbook, the fact is NFL teams HAVE to spend I believe at least 89% of the salary cap every year now, you can no cheap your way out anymore under the new CBA. The question is whether a CB is worth 10-15% of the salary cap. The answer is no, no CB is worth 10-15% of salary cap, at least not if yiou want to field a winning football team.
You don't understand the cap issue very well. The question isn't "can we afford Revis under the cap moving forward?" The question is "should we fit Revis under the cap at all costs moving forward?" He's a CB, he's very expensive, he's going late prime, and he's had leg injuries in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Anybody who says it is a no-brainer to lock Revis up long-term isn't looking at the actuarial tables when they make that statement.
Yes, trade him or lose him ARE the only options. And yes, YOU don't have a clue. Woody payrolls this team at $123M per year. It doesn't matter how wide his wallet is open because he is not allowed to spend more than that by NFL rules. One thing I do agree with you though... Paying anyone but a franchise QB close to 10% of team salary is cap nonsense indeed, you clueless troll.
The Jets have a cap problem this year, although it is less than it was at the end of the season, of course. But the cap is not a problem for next year. Revis can be kept and he can fit under the cap with a properly structured deal. If Revis is dealt it will not be because of the cap. It will be more about Woody not wanting to pay him.
You might be correct if you said that for Idzik to be thinking trade he SHOULD have had a discussion with Revis and his agents about an extension. But I have heard nothing that any such discussions occurred. If it turns out that the Jets end up trading him, and it comes out that no attempt was made to extend him, there will be hell to pay, and this franchise will be roasted, in fact by many Jet fans as well, for the foreseeable future as a clown show run by the biggest clown owner in sports. Or I should say even more than it is accurately portrayed as that already.
But paying 10-15% of the cap for just Revis creates future cap problems. For as good as he is, he's still a cornerback. Would you give Sebastian Janikowski 10-15% of the cap? Sure, he's the best kicker, but he's still a kicker. Not all positions are worth equal value.
Being devil's advocate, just because its not in the press doesn't mean the discussion hasn't happened. I like that the "leaks" have mostly gone away and the intrepid beat reporters are left scrambling.
BB you are correct, I am making this "assumption", and no I dont have a link. I do however have common sense, and Revis has not been happy and has felt "disrespected". In fairness, he has also said he wants to be a Jet for life so it is very deep and complex. It just dosent feel like the Jets will get a home-town discount for him IF they dont trade him. Oh, here is a link (I know how much you like them) about his malcontent just a few season's ago. I could find more, but I just dont feel the need to. Good Day sir http://nesn.com/2010/09/report-darr...10-year-122-million-contract-offer-from-jets/
If the Bucs are willing to pay Revis 12-13 Million, and that would be accepted by Revis, I hope the Jets are in talks with Revis right this minute for an extension. All of this "he feels disrespected" crap is hearsay, as there were "reports" of Revis being on the trade block the day Idzik was hired, so it seems to me many of those early "reports" were from people who aren't any more educated about the situation than many posters on here who have been guessing the Jets might trade Revis since October or earlier. clearly I'm no GM but even though a CB isn't as valuable as a QB, a CB of Revis' caliber is plenty valuable. He doesn't put up tons of TD's but he has a very clear and researchable history of allowing the other team's #1 TD producer approximately 0 TD's. He also generates picks and in some cases pick 6's, and limits the offense's yards with his effective tackling on running plays. Revis is the most complete corner in the game, possibly the most complete player. How can people say all he does is remove one player from the other team?
in today's world, something that happened is more likely than not to have come out in some fashion. Of course it is possible there have been discussions. But it is less likely that there have been if NO word of that has come out.
Rochester, To clarify, I did not mean to suggest Revis will definitely not demand a premium. There would be a logic to his doing so, since the Jets appear to have screwed up relations with him (which is a long analysis I will not repeat here). But your post made it sound like a sure thing he would. It isn't, of course.
