Depends how you define sleeper. If you talk about how high someone will get drafted or how they will pan out in the NFL? EJ Manuel seems to be a bigger sleeper than others because he has more atheltic attributes than the others do. Nassib looks promising, however I would not waste a first round draft pick on him. Drafting a mediocre QB with your first pick can send your franchise back (Sanchez) although with this season looming as his do or die, the jury is not completely out on him yet (although some on this board think hes junk and will always be junk which is fair considering his turnovers). I would not take Nassib at #9, the only QB I would take would be Geno Smith at that spot, but I am not even completely sold on him after watching the Pinstripe Bowl in that cold/slippery weather. He looked awful. If Nassib is there in the 3rd round and EJ Manuel is off the board, you may want to take him. This team has so many needs and there are so many better QB's next year AND the fact you got Garrard/Sanchez's last stand for this 2013 campaign your better off staying away from QB's in this draft IMO.
Ryan Nassib is going to be a backup in the NFL. He has a huge arm, but little else. Anyone who watched the Cuse this year can attest to that.
Nassib, Manual, Wilson, and Mike Glennon have all been mentioned in the top ten at one point or another this season. None of the are sleepers. What they are is inconsistent QBs that all have some of the tools to succeed at the next level, but may need time to develop, if they ever get it together.
Yeah... all have flaws, I guess its just what flaws you think you can fix. Its one tough year to judge that. Im sure one or maybe two will turn into something if they can properly be developed. Seattle was okay with Russel Wilson's flaws (mostly his height), and that worked out. As for Nassib, I think he would present solid value in the 2nd. He's a good fit in the WCO and has a lot of good qualities that can be maximized. If he can improve his touch and deep ball (which sometimes isnt something that can be taught), and his footwork (instead of jumping around, take shorter steps) then he could be a good QB.
I would view Nassib as a first round QB if his deep ball wasn't so derpy. Those passes look really weird and I don't know whether it's just a technique issue that can be fixed or if it's because he lacks touch.
I see Nassib in the Kellen Celemens type prospect when he came out. He does have a couple above average abilities, but overall what you are hoping for is an average to below average starting QB. And we can't really aim for that, especially with a higher pick. I'd rather take a shot at someone with tools and hope to hit big on potential like a Manuel or Bray, than someone more "polished" like Nassib. I think we all agree that having a very good QB can alleviate a lot of problems, so I'd rather take my shot at the guys that may turn into elite guys (or bust), rather than someone who turns into a Sanchez type, where you can't really count him out nor can you count on him caliber player. If we're going QB in the draft, I think it might be wise to go after Smith if available, or just wait until the 3rd or 4th and just pick off who drops, because I don't think the talent level/risk factor drop off is that great after Smith is gone to justify higher picks.
This is just not true. Of the QBs available in the draft, he is the most polished. He maybe doesn't have the hug potential that Geno or Manuel have, but he will be solid as soon as he steps onto the field. I would take Nassib in the second in a heart beat, but he'll be gone late first or maybe even at the Bills pick. Strong arm, extremely quick release, very good footwork (does sometimes hop a little bit), and can make all the throws. Don't forget the kind of leader he is, something we have been missing at the QB position for the longest time. Simply put, he is the most ready to produce out of all the QBs in this class.
I have not been high on Nassib at all throughout this off-season; but I recently watched some more of him and have come away much more impressed than I anticipated. I would not be opposed to taking him in the 2nd, would much prefer him in the 3rd. He seems accurate in the middle of the field and down the seams. His accuracy on intermediate throws outside the numbers does leave some to be desired, I noticed him overthrowing on occasion (both velocity and height/distance). Seems like he is trying to rifle it in (relying on arm strength) instead of using touch He has experience in a version of the WCO with Doug Marrone, and it was one that emphasized some deeper throws (similar to what Marty might be bringing to the Jets) Biggest positive I saw from him, was that he throws with good anticipation in regards to WRs coming out of breaks and getting by defenders - this might be Sanchez's worst trait With that said, there's something about his throwing motion/release that bothers me, can't quite place it, but it is pretty quick and high, so thats good
I'd take a flyer on him in the 3rd. We have way too many needs to address including a playmaking RB and a pass rushing DE/LB before drafting a high risk QB this year.
The sleepers at QB in this draft are Matt Scott, Sean Renfree, Brad Sorenson, Colby Cameron, people that nobody expect to go high in the draft and nobody would be surprised if they were UDFA's afterwards. Ryan Nassib isn't a sleeper. The average person covering this draft thinks he's gone by the 4th round at the latest and probably in the 2nd. Zac Dysert is another guy who just has too much coverage at this point to be a sleeper. He may well not go until the 4th round but nobody is going to be surprised if he gets taken in the 2nd. A sleeper is a guy nobody sees coming until he suddenly awakens and then he's right there in the middle of things.
IMO, he will be a successful QB in the league. Granted, he has a HUGE arm, and can make all the throws. But, I don't know what film you've been watching. Most the games I've been studying show major flaws in his game. 1. Most of his snaps are in the shotgun. Not his fault, but he definitely did not play a traditional NFL style in college. 2. He holds the ball at his waist when getting ready to the throw. 3. He stares down receivers and his touch passes are terrible. 4. He routinely throws high to open receivers, especially on the move. 5. He throws rockets at guys who are 10 yards away from him. No finesse in his passes. I just don't see why people are clamoring about this guy. Maybe it's this years class of QBs. But Nassib wouldn't even have been considered until mid 2nd round last year.
To answer your last question, are strength and mobility. He also has a quick release despite how awkwardly he holds the ball. The kid has tools to work with, but needs refinement.
And I totally agree with this statement. Strength, mobility, athleticism and a quick release are things I see on tape. Plus, he's supposedly a good leader. But man, everyone game he seems to leave 7-10 throws that should be completions out there. He is not extremely accurate when moving or on passes that need touch. Watch the USC and Missouri games. Just too erratic in my mind to be a solid QB.
I should have rephrased myself. By sleeper I mean a pick we would not expect and a guy who actually pans out to possibly be something great. I am referring to a Brady/Wilson type move. Grab a guy late and take a gamble and he pans out.
That USC game kills me. The first pick is something I've come to expect out of Sanchez. Under pressure he throws right at a defender. Like it was a dump off to a wide open linebacker. Uuugggggg! Still, I would not hate drafting him, but I do feel he's going to be over drafted in the first round.
The more I read about him the more I like Sean Renfree from Duke. Sure he doesn't have the strongest arm but he's accurate and was the sole reason why Duke played in a bowl game.
