I'm a gators fan and all I know is jones won that game for Georgia. He made play after play. He is always around the ball and creating turnovers. That's what we need
Its funny how analyst are saying this 40 time will have a big affect on him... the fact that he is only 240 and running that isn't good...Sharrif floyd ran a better 40 time. I still think we pull the trigger on him if he is there at 9....if its him and Ansah at nine it willl be a toss up
Ansah is raw - you get a proven player like Jarvis Jones ... all NFL players bulk up. You have him hangout with David Harris for an off-season
yeah-- I also agree you probably take Jones---he might now drop to us..I see someone picking up Dion Jordan before our turn..if you watch how Ansah plays though it looks like he has great eyes and awareness with a hell of a motor.. I also just listened to Pat Kirwin say that after recently watching tape his number one OLB is Mingo..now I know people hate Mingo on this forum but you have to take into account his opinion...I know he knows more than I do but from what I have seen I don't like Mingo as much as the other guys... It looks like we should be in a great spot to add long time OLB for us.. and it has been a long time since we drafted one of those...it should be a real fun draft for us...especially from what I have seen from Idzik griffdog
Hate to say it but I was happy he had a slow 40-time also. Once the medical reports came out that he was misdiagnosed, I figured he's out of reach. Now he's back in the Jets range. If he's on the board, Jets better be sure if they pass on Jones; he's gonna come in and make an impact.
He's not dropping that far. I think that crappy 40-time is enough to push him out of the top 3 & that increases Jets chances a little bit more which is good news for us. Hopefully Geno + another QB get picked before pick #9 also.
Exactly man, he's a perfect fit for this. Its a plug and play if Jets draft him. I'm with you, I'm so happy that he ran that slow 40. Im hoping that he drop to us. http://m.nfl.com/news/0ap1000000152723/ According to this article, Rex is the only coach that was at his pro day in the top 10. I have seen other reports that the Lions were trying him out though so I don't know what to think.
I don't really care about the 40 time. The concern I have is that he isnt very big. He doesn't have a great body. He looks more like weakside linebacker in a 4-3 that a 3-4 OLB. I don't think the Jets will take him. Keep an eye on Tavon Austin.
People are making too big a deal out his 40 time... just as a reminder Vernon Gholston ran a 4.6 40 and that really worked out well right? This is a no brainer, if somehow Jones is there we have to take him. I'm not sold on Jordan. My top 2 guys would be Jones or Warmack in that order, Fisher would be third.
You're worried about size & then push Tavon Austin? There's HS players bigger than him. Jarvis Jones has been able to play OLB in the SEC. It's the same conference that puts out a ton of players to be drafted early or mid rounds. If he had the same exact production but came out of a lesser conference then you'd have a better argument. Also, everybody gains size when they enter the NFL.
I could care less about the 40 time. Bottom line is he produces on the field on one of the hardest conferences in college football. Some analysts are already saying that he'll drop out of the top 10. Its not a sure thing obviously since a lot of the time they are wrong.
Size as a 34 OLB is paramount to effectiveness. You need to be able to stand up to NFL tackles one on one, set edge, shed a block and still make plays. This would be the one area that is not Jones's strong suit. He should be adaquate setting the edge while excelling when called on to penetrate the line. Austin is a wideout/return man/gadget player who will make his money based on quickness and speed. The situations could not be more different.
Jones has shown all those abilities in the SEC. He's coming in as a rookie, so I'm not willing to accept he can't get bigger. Obviously the poster I responded to feels that way. Yet in the same post, where Jones gets knocked for his size, we get a push for a 170 pound WR? If you wanna discuss the positives for Austin, I can accept that. But don't give it to me in the same paragraph where other guys are being knocked for being too small.
Yes, but an undersized receiver can still be extremely effective. An undersized OLB? Not so much. It's why Maybin was a complete washout. If you don't have power on the edge your a one trick pony who is easily countered. Jones has shown more than adaquate power to go with his good first step. As for jones gaining muscle mass. It's very possible if he's willing to put the work in. That, outside of the medical issue, is the biggest knock against him. He's not much of a weight room guy and its why he tested so poorly at his pro day. He is still the best edge player in this draft regardless of those issues.
Watch the games where Jones supposedly got pushed around. People talk about the Alabama game as exposing his size issues against the run, and Lacy had a huge game that day. Then you look at the video of the game and Alabama has two big blockers on Jones almost every time they run at him and they're still not gashing Georgia outside, they're going between the tackles for big gains. The score is tight the whole game and Jones is making plays, he's just not dominant because when you have a tackle plus a tight end/guard on you it tends to shut you down and it would if you weighed 255 also. Nick Saban is no dope. He knew who he had to account for and who he could not run over even when accounted for and so he accounted for Jones and then ran between the tackles.
With Wilkerson, Ellis and Coples on the inside, a team wouldnt be able to do that. There would be a 1 on 1 battle somewhere...
