Unless the heavens open and bless Rex he will be gone next year. The new GM will bring in his new coach who will bring in his own assistants. Trade MEvi$ for the 1st and 2nd in next years draft, if you can and unless Milliner is there, drop back and aquire a 2nd in next years. Hell trade away this years 1st for a 1st and 2nd next year. No sence in drafting a guy for Ryan's Defense when Ryan won't be here in a year and we could even have a diffferent defensive sceme. Build up a couple 1st and 2nd round picks, get a coach who can do more than talk and one who can control his own team. Give the new coach a ton of picks to build this team. Wht let the whole defense leave and keep one player for one year which means nothing. Get what you can and get out.
We need some players this year too, to start the rebuilding process. Teams know next year's draft is solid, especially in Rd 1, giving those picks away isn't something other GMs are going to do...unless a player like Revis is involved. I understand your thinking, but trading draft picks is a lot more complicated than it appears.
"Get a coach who can do more than talk and one who can control his own team" I don't know where you get that he can't control his team. Jets are one of the least penalized teams in the NFL with barely any arrests. If your talking about the whole Santonio Holmes fiasco, that was a speculation, we don't know what really happened and anyways players get frustrated at times. Plus Holmes is known for being a cancer. Without Rex this team doesn't win 6 games last year. Maybe 1 at most and that's week 1 at Buffalo when Sanchez played well.
Without Mason, Burress and possibly Holmes and without Manish Mehta and whoever Deep Throat was Rex never gets the "lost the locker room" tag applied to him last year. The pressure the Jets were under in the 2012 off-season and season was largely self-applied but the stories that ran in the off-season set most of that up and damn near sank the Jets. I don't think Sanchez gets the extension if the Daily News is not on a months-long campaign to de-stabilize the Jets last winter and spring.
One other effect of stockpiling picks in next year's draft is that it would make the Jets HC job pretty appealing for a new coach. That combined with a favorable cap situation would make for a clean slate approach to the rebuilding process.
Stockpiling draft picks so we can start over with a new HC who will have no idea how to use people like Mo Wilkerson and Quinton Coples in the same defense is just a really depressing thought. You can't draft defense up top in 3 or 4 straight drafts and then replace your defensive head coach. You do that and you have just doubled your rebuild period because not only does the offense have to get rebuilt from the ground up but so does the defense that you've invested so heavily in.
Beat me to it. Ryan may only know one side of the ball, but the players, owners and the majority of Jet fans love him. What other Jet coach has been to AFC Championship games in half the seasons they coached? Before some Nimrod says he only did it with Mangini's roster, then why couldn't Mangini get that roster to the playoffs? Rex is a good coach!
