I disagree, I think we could see a Smith/Kaepernick type of situation in D.C. Who takes a Qb in the 4th round after you traded up to get one in the first? You didnt see the Colts do it, or the Jets, or any other recent first round QB. I think Shanahan sees something in Cousins and thats why he took em.
Based on reports, Revis' trade value is a second round pick from Tampa this season or a first from Tampa in 2014. If the Redskins traded for Cousins, they would get at least that based on age, cost and value of the position.
Its very possible what Shanahan saw, was RGIIIs reckless style of play. And knew he would need insurance.
of course Revis said he wanted to stay with the team; he has everything to gain but nothing to lose by doing so. now he looks like the good guy and the victim if the Jets ship him off, but it doesn't mean it is true.
and the Dolphins rolled out the bank for Scott Mitchell and the Chiefs for Cassel; doesn't mean back up QB's who come in and have success are actually worth that just because they create hysteria with some GM's, whose decisions proved to be poor.
At this point it is hard to know why Revis would want to stay on the Jets, on balance, anyway. They do have some things to offer, like he needs them to redo his contract so that he does not play 13 at a below market rate, and risk another injury without a new contract in place. The Jets are also best positioned to negotiate with him in terms of the timing. Other teams want to have their rosters figured out sooner than later. But right now Revis's health is a question mark. A team that can wait to figure out whether to enter into a multi-year deal has an advantage. that is the Jets. If for example Revis is NOT healthy by August, what is the downside for the Jets? Not much. Without Revis and without an infusion of significant talent in a trade for high round picks, the Jets were not going to even be mediocre. But if he is healthy, they can lock him up to a long term deal, and hopefully be competitive in 14. Revis also has an endorsement deal with Reebok that is more valuable if he stays in New York.
Being a superbowl MVP doesn't help the team trading to get you. It's a pretty meaningless thing to consider when trying to determine a players value. Why you bring it up here is confusing to me. Clearly Revis is a much higher caliber player than Holmes ever was or ever will be. We're talking about a HOF caliber player with prime years left here. Obviously his value is lowered by the circumstances of his injury and contract but to compare him to Holmes is, well, stupid. Every team in the league would trade a 3rd for Revis and the Jets would never trade him for such a pathetic offer.
Tell Revis -- we believe in you and we want to sign you. We entertain trade offers but no team in the NFL feels you are worth a 3rd round pick let alone $16 million year. We want you to make every team pay for their insults!
I tend to avoid stating scenarios that are too close to what I want to happen unless they are based on something other than that wish on my part. Well, since the Jets have not dealt Revis, and on top of that no other team seems willing to offer substantial value (imo fair value would be two first round picks and that's depending on where they are, meaning not too low), it is possible to keep him. He should look around and see that his market value is somewhere around $13 mil, if that, not $16mil. At or below $13mil the Jets can and should make that deal. Get it done, Idzy, and tell Woody I said he should go F himself.
Given that the best CB to sign this off season was for what $6 million a season? I don't see how any team can come out and say they require a $16 million CB let a lont a $16 million CB coming of a knee injury and losing picks. I think his number is $10 mil.
Everyone keeps claiming that Revis wants $16 million a year, but I have yet to see anything that backs this up. Has Revis stated this? His agents? I really have a hard time believing that is how much he is seeking on a new deal. He wants to be the highest paid CB in the league, that can be done for $12 million a year.
This is the original source of that figure. It may in fact be outdated at this point, but people aren't just making it up. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/jets/revis_wants_to_run_dash_N7JtAAmUowI7BwNng58MAP
I haven't seen anything, but with his history I believe it to be true. He's making more than 12 per now. He's not looking to go backwards. The sole reason I believe the jets want to trade him is Dealing with him on the business side is impossible. He's got 2 contract breaks already, if they give him 16 mill, in a year from now he will want 18 . The team isn't good, and they don't want to be held hostage by his agent every other year anymore.
all Cousins is, at the moment, is the equivalent of those two, so your suggestion is the same as trading Revis for them.
Can you explain clearly the difference between Smith/Kaepernick and RGIII/Cousins? It's the most obvious thing and it meant that Kaepernick was going to get a shot as soon as Smith faltered. Hint: it's not part of the RGIII/Cousins equation at all.
No it's not, it's the equivalent of suggesting they trade him before they proved they weren't franchise QBs. It's also the equivalent of suggesting they trade Revis for a young Brett Favre or for Steve Young.
no it isn't, because Young and Favre were high draft picks that were highly sought after by teams, not a low draft pick that people only want because of some success as a back up in limited action. please explain how Cousins, who people only want because of the little success he had as a back-up, isn't the same as Cassel and Mitchel, who were only sought after because of limited success as back ups, and is the same as two high draft picks that either sat on the bench behind a HOFer or was drafted high but traded away?
The thing that sucks about trading Revis is that at some point in the future the Jets won't be in cap hell anymore and we'll be thinking to ourselves "gee wouldn't it be nice if we still had Revis?" On the other hand, if we had a GM who was going to give him the money he's asking for, then we might also have a GM who wasn't going to get the Jets out of cap hell. Still to be determined, but I think Idzik will get us out of cap hell.
