We will field a a young fast team. Sort of like the Seahawks. My ideal situation would be resign revis, draft Jordan or jones at 9 and the hopefully Matt Elam is available at our 2nd round pick. We won't miss Landry much with that addition, IMO Elam is a better open field tackler and hits like a ton of bricks. Most of landrys big hits were defenseless recievers coming across the middle and not big hits on runbingbacks. Not knocking Landry but Elam looks like he lays a hit nearly on everyone of his tackles.
The part in bold is about the only part I agree with. Our secondary lost both of its starting safeties, and we could still very well end up trading Revis. We lost unappreciated DTs in Devito and Pouha. Scott Pace, and Smith aren't huge losses, but if it was so easy to get better, stronger, faster guys, then why were these guys starting last year? They might be able to get stronger faster guys, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be better. If we make the right picks, then in time we will have a better D, but to expect a better D in 2013 is setting your self up for a big let down.
While I love the moves and general direction so far, one should temper thier expectations by remembering the younger and faster does not equal better. Speed is a big deal, but if it was the only thing that mattered the Radiers would have dominated the last decade. What we needed was turn over on defense and we are getting it. Rex and the staff will be forced to give some young guys a chance to grow, but there will be growing pains.
Well...another week goes by & another addition to the defense...ANTWAN BARNES.....OLB. Ok, Jets still need 2 more OLB's. P.S....More to come !!!
Exactly. People have to remember that we are possibly only returning 3 starters. That either means that younger players have to step into much bigger roles, or new players on the team (draftees or FAs) have to learn a new system and play immediately. Rex's system is known to be complex and multiple and it wont be easy to pick up. I dont expect this defense to be much better, especially if we lose Revis. I know people hate on Scott and Pace (they were huge underachievers compared to their contract), but they played big roles on the team. Now someone new has to take over. Also, Pouha, Devito, Landry and Bell were huge contributors (even if Pouha was injured for most of the year). Its going to be hard to have rookies or FA's who are new to the system and team to come in here and play at a high level. Personally, I just dont see how this defense could possibly be better. It may be younger and faster, but Im not sure better.
It's not going to be better. Even if Revis comes back, it's not going to be better. As far as starters go, you lost both outside linebackers, an inside linebacker, your nose tackle, one defensive tackle and both safeties. You did not sign anybody that is an upgrade at any of these positions (with the possible exception of Barnes). It's foolish to believe we're going to be better because of ... um ... magic!
I'm not thinking "um, magic" I'm thinking that Rex Ryan is a great defensive coach and most of the people who have left were either on the downside of their careers and slowing down or role-players in the defense. If the Jets had lost 5x LaRon Landry, then yeah there would likely be a big step down. However he's the only guy they've lost who was an impact player. Even if the Jets lose Revis, as seems likely, he only played in 2 games last year and the defense was still pretty good.
Yes, but there's no reason to believe we replaced them with anybody better (and every reason to believe we replaced them with people who are worse).
dead on...agree 100 percent. The thing that has killed this team the past 2 years is the linebacker position. I mean look at Pace and Scott alone. They brought nothing to the table to go along with a front line that hasnt been able to get to the qb...IMHO the defense overachieved big time. And this love affair with a few for Devito is lost on me. In fact, Pouha too. These are guys that were herald for their run defense but to me it was an easy job considering they hung out at the line of scrimmage on every play. Depending on how they sure up the safety position, this defense HAS to be better than last year. Process of elimination.
They can always bring Kerry Rhodes back, nobody has played the FS position as well as he did...since he left...IMO ???
My worry is the safety position. It was a problem before last season and now losing Bell & Landry, I'm concerned. I'm also praying very hard that if Revis is traded, management isn't looking at Kyle Wilson as his replacement.
Funny thing about the Safety {FS} position, I believe that the Jets have threre starting FS on the roster. Actually starting FS & SS. Kyle Wilson can be a very good FS. And Antonio Allen can be there SS....IMO. Kyle Wilson sucks as a CB, but would be dynamic as a FS. I can't understand why Jets coaches don't see that ??? Jets can always sign a F.A.... I like Kerry Rhodes.
Agreed..it should be a major concern because last year, it was almost as important against the run as it was against the pass. Its a real problem area right now. Perhaps a more speedy front 7 will allow that position to do its job...but not sure...and RUN AND GUN....man...I would really rather not go down that road again with Rhodes. (Too lazy to make a joke about that line) Hey, Im all ok with the changes being made because besides Revis EDIT AND LANDRY, if Revis is not a Jet, there isnt a guy that left Im losing any sleep over. What..instead we will be 43rd in sacks? Be below average instead of not even average against the run? As much as Rex has gotten on my nerves the past few years, you have to hand it to him that the defense, without Revis, was actually respectable. Losing Laudry is HUGE..HUGE. They should have figured out a way to make the work unless Landry so the writing on the wall about the defections and didnt even listen. Its a new day..and a new D. As bad as many thinking it might be...Im much more concerned about the offense from top to bottom anyway.
While I'm convinced revis has to be traded(financial reasons only) you can never say the defense will be better without him. He's that good. I understand that at lb were younger and faster, hopefully we find a pass rusher that will bring something to the table we haven't had in a while. My position has always been that cromartie and revis were so good, covered up for how bad our front 7 has been. So we may be getting an upgrade there, but losing revis puts such a different dynamic on what's expected from the other guys. Cromartie and wilson won't cover up mistakes like cromartie and revis. The fact revis so good, everyone was dismissive of how good cramrtie actually is.speaks volumes for his talent.
I think our defense will be better then last year if we draft Jordan or jones and Also a safety. Wilkerson-coples combo is going to be deadly especially with one of those guys coming off the edge along with Antwan Barnes. We also need the best corner duo in the nfl back revis and cro. Add Wilson in the slot, which I think he is overly criticized in some aspects, we would have the best corner trio. Rex really has never had a great pass rusher off the edge while with the jets. With wilk/coples/Barnes/Jordan or jones it will make our secondary even better and create more interceptions. DT was weak last year with pouha missing a lot of games and playing injured, Ellis was hurt and out a few games but I think he has good potential to be a solid dt. He was brought in as a project and this should be his year to show us what he's got along with ducasse. Davis will be better in coverage then Bart. Safety is a different story. I would like to sign pollard and draft a safety. But over all I think we will field a better D with a few ifs. Plus Rex will be the play caller again and that's a plus. An addition to all this butler would be a great pickup in free agency
Revis could very well be a Jet this season, It seems like we arent sure if we really want to tade him. I wonder how much influence Rex has over this process because its starting to seem like he may not be traded. And if he does get traded once he is gone if will leave a void that may never get filled. We had Landry n Bell along with Cro n Wilson. Thats why our pass d was able to still be good. We no longer have bell and landry and if we lose Revis to our pass defense is gonna be a joke Cro can only do so much
If Revis is a Jet this season it will be because the Jets couldn't find an acceptable deal for him at any point. That'll be sad if it happens but you can't trade an All-Pro caliber player for peanuts. It hurts the public perception of the team and management too much. I'm all for getting the best possible return on Revis but not at the cost of having the media go ballistic on the Jets for a de-stabilizing six month run of "these guys can't shoot straight" type articles. If the best the Jets can get for Revis is a second round pick they may well be better off just letting him play the year for them and then leave. It's not clear what the return on that would be but locking in a second round pick makes the equation very clear. While that might be the best move from a rebuilding point of view all the value they get from it could be offset by the hyenas.
Wait, so it's Tanny's fault that Rex played the wrong people last year? Can Rex do no wrong? We have the Tebownites. Not we have the Rexonites? WTF?
