Strange time to be a jets fan, at least for me...Comparing the empty feeling that I have knowing we are more than likely about to ship off our best player (having just cut another favorite of mine in Pouha)- to the excitement that usually accompanies the beginning of free agency. Even more ironic is the fact that we have been so recklessly aggressive on these days in the past is a large reason why we stand where we stand today.
LOL, talk about flawed logic. Whether it's the old days or new days , there will always be a need for a shutdown CB and D. Revis is the one for the job. Lets take just 2009, for example. The Jet VS The San Diego Chargers. Chargers had a very well round offense with Rivers having many weapons available to him to throw yet....that was the big advantage the experts were noting when the Jets went to their home field. Yet, Rivers only threw the ball 3 times to WR's covered by Revis. Who ever Revis shadowed, the player was out of the picture. It forced River's to change his game - and we know what the result of that was. What ever big named reciever Revis covered, that player felt the impact: Randy Moss 4 Rec 24yds Andre Johnson 4 rec 35yds Chad Ochoccinco 0 receptions Point is , there are many teams in the NFL, even today, that have that one game breaking reciever. Put CB like Revis in the position to take that game breaker out of the equation, and it gives that team a better chance to over come the lesser receivers. To make a point about a given era is ludicrous. Waht ever team winds up with the Revis, he will significantly improve their chances to overcome the elite teams WRs..
And...just to put a better point on it...at the end of the day, there will be a big contract athlete more physically talented, who has not had as good a coach, available through FA.
I'll give you one simple example, why you're wrong. You know Revis is up this week...so what happens...you put your number one guy, like Mike Wallace in Miami, on the Left side...and have him run nothing but 9 routes, Dragging Revis down the field.(easy first read..revis drops off, Wallace on Safety heave it. In 3 seconds, he's 20 yards down field. The left flat is open, as well as the QBs front side. Great or not. Corner...is a Corner...Is a Corner. You simply make Revis cover a guy you have no intention of targeting.
I think playing 10 on 10 favors the D more than the offense. But your point about positional value does have merit. The bottom line is I might rather Rodgers-Cromartie and Laron Landry and Chase Daniel and Brandon Gibson for $13 million plus some picks instead of Revis at that number. *Edit: As I type it Daniel signs with KC. But that's not the point. The point is his cap number can be used on a guy that might not be quite as good but still good enough + would fill other holes.
You just proved my point. If a team is willing to waste their number 1 guy to run 9 routes and hope their other wideouts will fair better, that to me says all there is about how valuable Revis is. Your assuming also that the other CB's and FS's can't cover the other ones. That's tough to buy. So what happened in the San Diego game? That's exactly what they tried to do...and we know the outcome of that one.
From any value perceptive it's insane to pay Revis unless of course you can guarantee that you're actually going to get good enough value in his replacements to get equal or better results. Having actually watched Jets football for over 45 years hard to imagine we will ever field a defense like 09 in any of our lifetimes even with the added value.
Yeah, like Revis helped us win against the Colts in the AFCCG. The 1 isn't always the guy that makes the difference.
Same, and I'm getting scared they would do this without a 1st. With all the teams being linked to them, I'm sure one will cave and offer a first this year
IMO, it doesn't make sense to Trade Revis for anything less than a 1st, + something else, maybe a second next year. If the Jets can't get that, keep him for this year at 6M, then see what happens.
