When Star was healthy he was considered a top 3 pick. Having him, Coples, and Wilkerson would be a great defensive line. That being said it might be worth trading down if there's still value to be found. Admitedly, I haven't seen much of Sharrif Floyd, but it'd only be worth taking him if a lot of the OLBs were drafted already (which is likely the case if they both drop) and they can't get a good trade down.
If his health checks out, Star. Floyd does not provide as much scheme versatility. Star may be the most talented football player in this draft.
if star is at our pick at 9 and is medically OK (lets be honest I doubt he is even there at 9 if he is medically cleared), you take him in a heartbeat. With mo wilk, coples, and star, you probably have the best d-line in the nfl. a young one too.
I bet there would be someone willing to trade up for Star. Star's sick and would make our D-line amazing but I'm not sure that taking our D-line from Really good to great is worth more than trading down and getting more picks.
2x 1st rounders and Star is yours. You know how good he is. (And with another 1st rounder we got from Revis deal...)
In addition, it will open lanes for our LB's and thus help our secondary. We need a Kris Jenkins (Push the line, and force double teams.) type that this team has been lacking.
Star would be a great 34 de and maybe nt on passing situations so would be potential every down contributor Coples I still don't see as a 34 base de and devito now gone
Honestly I would hate to go D line 3 years in a row with the first pick but I don't see how you can pass on Star. He's got everything you want. Speed, an incredibly quick and powerful first step, ridiculous strength, and an ability to get off blockers.
I still believe Coples would be better served as a 3-4 OLB. JMO If that is the case, Star is a 3-4 DE, and would greatly improve our DL.
Exactly what I was thinking. Before this draft, there's no way I'd be happy with drafting DL. However, I also felt it was impossible for somebody like Star to be sitting there @ pick #9. Jets would have a young/powerful DL capable of tearing up offenses. LB jobs are gonna be much easier with those 3 monsters up front.
Not debating your point but instead wondering if Rex would ever consider such an idea. Could Rex be so unhappy with OLB prospects this draft that the Jets draft on the DL & pushes Coples back there? I'm pretty sure I read an article on Rex working with Coples last year in Pro Day & somebody said Rex had him going through LB drills and still couldn't tire out Coples. Never read anything about Rex giving Coples any LB drills after he was drafted though.
The Jets really need a star linebacker. They're not going to get to the next level as a defense by adding more to the defensive line. They need somebody back there who is a threat on every play.
But if Star is cleared with this heart condition and is the best player available at 9 you have to take him. I'm a firm believer in best player available, you should never draft for need.
Then why should we draft Jordan over Moore? Jordan is a wonderful run stopper who can get to the qb but Moore is a more productive sacker, fits our system better and is more of a sure thing (though maybe he has a lower ceiling.). I'm just curious your (or anyone's) opinion about the difference between the two.
To the OP: I'd take Lotulelei over Floyd at this point. Lotulelei is the more dominant player inside and the Jets now have a need at DT as well if they're going to stay in a hybrid 3-4/4-3. To not further de-rail the thread (my fault) I'll respond to this in the "Who would you take with out first pick at #9?" thread.
